Diversity and inclusion are important to our culture. It starts with our CEO and is encouraged throughout our company. We value diversity because it helps to create a better company for our employees that translates into the best experience for our customers.
We created a team - called the Diversity Business Council - to be responsible for BCBSNE’s commitment to diversity. Compromised of 25 employees with diverse backgrounds from different areas of the organization, the Council helps our company stay committed to four main areas of diversity and inclusion:

Meet Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska’s (BCBSNE’s) fearless leader, Steve Grandfield, president and chief executive officer. A trailblazer in the insurance industry, Grandfield has been with the company for 15 years, serving in a number of areas, including information services, strategy, innovation, talent and sales.
Grandfield was on the ground floor of some of Omaha’s early technology companies (including First Data Corporation), gaining computer expertise he brought to Blue Cross in 2003. He moved up the executive ranks until he became the top CEO candidate in a nationwide search by the company’s board of directors in 2018. Regardless of the role he’s in—whether it’s in an executive capacity at BCBSNE, or in his very first venture in the business world as a shift manager at a Hy-Vee grocery store—Grandfield leads by the following mindset: that we all want to feel valued at work, and we all want to feel like we make an impact.
Grandfield carries this mentality both in and outside of the organization – and it shows. He is a recipient of the Tim Rouse Advocate for Women in Leadership Award from the Institute for Career Advancement Needs (ICAN), an award that honors male leaders in the community who embody and support the advancement of women and inspire and encourage women to reach their full potential.
He is also active in the community, currently serving on the Ak-Sar-Ben Board of Councillors and the Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors.
Beyond work and community service, Grandfield is a commercial pilot, avid golfer, and cooking and music enthusiast.

Although I am fairly new to the company (five months in), I am overwhelmed by the warm welcomes I have received by each new business unit I am introduced to and the positive collaboration I have experience with each new project I start. The pleasant reception experienced evokes a kind of familiarity, security and comfort level that is usually only felt when one is with a company for several years. Feeling so at home, so soon after I have started, has been a delightful surprise.
In addition, the daily support and leadership of my immediate manager, and their managers above, allows for a work environment that encourages creativity, the freedom to learn along the way and the delivery of praise and accolades with professional accomplishments and wins.
I was already passionate about the health care industry so joining the BCBSNE family, a family that is fiercely devoted to the security and compassion of our members, has proven to be the perfect professional move for me.
The work spaces are a little on the small side, and somewhat awkward, but that’s really not that big of a deal in the scheme of things!
Advice to Management
Continue to keep the lines of communication open, at all time; continue to foster an environment of teamwork and collaboration and continue to be invested in the well-being of the employees.
I applied online. The process took 2+ weeks. I interviewed at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska (Omaha, NE) in November 2016.
Phone screen with a recruiter, who reviewed my applicable work history, asked a couple behavioral questions, and explained the role very well. Very positive experience. Invited in to meet one-on-one with hiring manager, who conducted well-balanced interview and made me feel comfortable. Recruiter kept me posted on the process two days later and then called the next week with a job offer.
