As 2014 drew to a close, Boyd Gaming Corporation celebrated a great milestone—the 40th anniversary of the opening of the California Hotel and Casino, the founding property of our Company.
From that single property in Downtown Las Vegas, Boyd Gaming has grown into one of the nation’s leading casino entertainment companies. Over that time, we’ve gained unique perspective on what it takes to successfully build long-term shareholder value. And we continued to put that experience and perspective to work in 2014.
We closed the year with back-to-back quarters of revenue and EBITDA growth. We saw positive momentum in our Las Vegas and Atlantic City operations, and encouraging stabilization throughout our regional markets.
This performance was helped by several strategic actions we took throughout 2014.
We strengthened our operations. We restructured and streamlined our operations management team, improved our cost structure, and refocused marketing initiatives at select properties to drive better results. These efforts are helping us leverage modest revenue gains into solid EBITDA growth.
We invested in future growth. We saw good results from our initial investments in non-gaming amenities, particularly in our hotel business. We will accelerate these efforts in 2015, focusing capital on targeted investments in our hotel and food and beverage products, as we seek to make our properties more relevant and compelling to a broader range of customers.
We improved our financial position. We repaid nearly $200 million in debt in 2014, bringing our two-year total to about $725 million. Thanks to this continued financial discipline, our balance sheet is the strongest it has been since the recession, putting us on sound footing to pursue strategic growth initiatives.
These actions are moving our Company in the right direction. And the investment community has taken note of our progress. In 2014, Boyd Gaming stock rose nearly 14%, outperforming both our peer group and broader market indexes.
As we begin our 40th year in business, we remain confident in our ability to increase long-term value. We have the experience to overcome future challenges, should they emerge, and to build a Company that is able to endure and prosper. As we have done many times over the decades, we continue to evolve and adapt as a Company, further positioning Boyd Gaming for long-term, sustainable growth.

Our Company’s story is unique and inspiring: one man parlayed an unflagging sense of optimism, a winning attitude with people, and a legendary work ethic into a gaming and entertainment empire.
The Boyd Gaming story dates back to 1941, when Sam Boyd arrived in Las Vegas with his family and just $80 in his pocket. He worked up through the ranks of the Las Vegas gaming industry, moving from dealer to pit boss to shift boss. It wasn’t long before Sam had saved up enough money to buy a small interest in the world-renowned Sahara Hotel. He then moved on to become general manager and partner at The Mint in downtown Las Vegas, where he introduced a number of successful marketing, gaming and entertainment innovations.
After the Mint was sold in 1968, Sam Boyd started managing the Eldorado Casino in downtown Henderson. He had acquired it with his son, Bill Boyd, in 1962. Bill, a practicing attorney, earned his first interest in the Eldorado by doing all of its legal work.
The birth of Boyd Gaming came on January 1, 1975, when Sam and Bill Boyd founded the Company to develop and operate the California Hotel and Casino in downtown Las Vegas. At this time, Bill left the legal profession, after practicing for 15 years, and began working full-time at the California. Seeking a niche for their new property, the Boyds decided to market the property to the underserved tourists of Hawaii – and one of downtown’s greatest success stories was born.
Their next venture came several years later, when the Boyds selected a quiet 13-acre desert parcel on Boulder Highway – halfway between the California and the Eldorado – as the site of their next casino. They’d call it “Sam’s Town,” after the father of Boyd Gaming. Its 1979 opening led to the creation of what’s known today as the “Boulder Strip” – and it was the first full-scale resort to cater to Las Vegas locals. Although many were skeptical a casino could succeed at the then-isolated location, the Boyds’ gamble paid off handsomely. Sam’s Town quickly grew into one of the most popular casinos in the Las Vegas Valley.
Although famous as a leading businessman and innovator, Sam Boyd was well-known for giving back to his community as well. He helped introduce both the United Way and the Boys and Girls Clubs to Las Vegas in the 1960s. He was an early proponent of diversity in the gaming industry as well, becoming one of the first casino operators to hire women and African-Americans as dealers.
Sam Boyd passed away in 1993, but the company he founded continued to grow and thrive under Bill’s leadership. Through a series of new developments and strategic acquisitions – including our recent acquisitions of the IP Casino Resort Spa and Peninsula Gaming -- Boyd Gaming grew into a nationwide company, operating 22 casino entertainment properties in Nevada, New Jersey, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana and Mississippi.
Although we’ve grown into a nationwide company, we’ve never forgotten Sam Boyd’s legacy of integrity, service and excellence. Sam Boyd founded a business based on a belief in treating people right, and his spirit lives on in the company that bears his name.
Choice of Health Care Plans ad Dental/Vision Coverage
At Boyd Gaming we respect the differences among individuals. This extends to our belief that there is no one-size-fits-all health care plan. This has led the Company to offer all team members a choice among three different health care plans so that they can get the medical coverage that best fits their needs.
All three health plan options include pharmacy coverage, including low costs for generic prescription drugs and a mail-order program for maintenance medications.

All team members covered by one of the Company health care plans are also covered by our Company-paid life insurance policy. Any dependents who are covered by one of our health care plans also receive Company-paid life insurance.

In addition to the Company-paid life insurance that comes with our health plans you can also elect to receive additional coverage for you and your dependents.

Critical Illness Insurance
This benefit pays a lump sum cash amount upon the diagnosis of a critical illness. Also available to dependents.

Universal Life Insurance
Provides life insurance and also builds cash value over time. Also available to dependents.
Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA's)
Team members eligible for enrollment in one of our health care plans can choose to contribute pre-tax dollars to a flexible spending account that can be used to pay for eligible out-of-pocket health expenses - and also to a flexible spending account for eligible dependent daycare expenses.
401(k) Savings Plan
We also offer our team members the opportunity to enroll in a 401(k) savings plan (as of the first of the month following three months of employment) - with the Company matching a percentage of your contributions.
Onsite Health Coaches
Health coaches are available to assist team members and spouses covered by a Company health care plan with improving and maintaining their desired health status.
Health Risk Assessments (HRA’s)
Free, confidential HRA’s are provided annually to help our team members and spouses covered by a Company health care plan with identifying and addressing potential health conditions.
