Buckeye Partners – Why Work For Us?

Founded over 128 years ago, Buckeye Partners, LP is a publicly-traded master limited partnership (NYSE: BPL) that provides mid-stream energy logistics services.

Buckeye owns and operates one of the nation’s largest independent petroleum products common carrier pipeline networks providing refiners, wholesalers, marketers, airlines, railroads and other commercial end-users with dependable, all-weather transportation of refined petroleum products.

We are a Fortune 500 company with a proven track record of stability and success. We pride ourselves on the laser focus we apply to safely providing service and value to our customers, operating by a strong set of values, and empowering our employees to make decisions. We have a tenacious commitment to environmental responsibility and regulatory compliance in all that we do.

Premier Pipeline Services – Both Domestic and Abroad

In addition to pipeline transportation services, Buckeye provides terminalling, storage and refined product distribution services. The Partnership owns more than 100 refined petroleum products terminals with an aggregate storage capacity of over 64 million barrels.

Buckeye Partners owns and operates a major natural gas storage facility in California, and markets liquid petroleum products in certain regions served by its pipeline and terminal operations. Buckeye's flagship marine terminal in The Bahamas (BORCO) is one of the largest crude oil and petroleum products storage facilities in the world, serving the international markets as a premier global logistics hub.

Our Mission is to deliver superior returns to our investors through our talented, valued employees and our core strengths of:

  • An unwavering commitment to safety, environmental responsibility, regulatory compliance, and personal integrity
  • Best-in-class customer service and sophisticated commercial operations
  • Operational excellence that provides consistent, reliable performance at the lowest reasonable cost
  • An entrepreneurial approach toward logistical solutions to profitably expand and optimize Buckeye’s portfolio of global energy assets
  • A commitment to consistent execution and the continuous improvement of our operations, projects and people

The Buckeye Partners management team places an emphasis on career-pathing for employees, by continually aligning employees’ skills and interest with the needs of the organization.

Employees are provided with impactful training in order to excel in their roles and grow professionally. Leaders throughout the company assess knowledge gaps on projects and new initiatives, and observe our employees’ abilities and interests to determine how best to align. This type of matching is critical for mutual success—we know that employees who see their best interests addressed in their career path are ultimately going to be highly engaged contributors to our team success.

We are dedicated to continuing the strong employee culture we enjoy today, and take pride in hiring the employees with the right attitude and skillset for our organization. This focus has paid off tremendously, as we find ourselves attracting the best talent, creating excellent products and services, and taking pride in being a global leader in mid-stream energy logistics services.

History and the oil industry have seen many changes in the more than 128 years since Buckeye’s original formation. Buckeye has survived, grown, and prospered through those many years by diligently seeking to provide excellent service to meet the changing needs of its customers. Throughout the years, the company has continually adapted itself to accommodate new industry standards as they emerged, ever-changing markets and business conditions, continuously evolving technologies, as well as the many operating and economic challenges that time presents.

From its modest nineteenth century beginning as a local crude gathering subsidiary, Buckeye in the twentieth century transformed itself into one of the nation's largest independent common carrier refined products pipelines. Building on its successful reputation for excellent customer service, Buckeye has continued to prosper and grow to become a leading logistics service provider to the energy industry in the opening decade of the twenty-first century:

1800’s -Buckeye Partners traces its roots back to the Spring of 1886, when the Buckeye Pipe Line Company was incorporated as a subsidiary of the Standard Oil Company. Buckeye became an independent publicly owned company after Standard Oil’s dissolution in 1911. Expansion into petroleum products transportation after World War II transformed the company into one of the nation's largest independent common carrier pipelines.

1930’s- The Buckeye Pipe Line Company originally was established to supply refineries in northwestern Ohio with crude oil gathered from local production sources. During the 1930s and 1940s, the company expanded its crude oil operations and constructed a network of trunk lines that supplied refineries from Chicago to Buffalo. As local production declined, and was replaced by crude supply from the Mid-Continent and Gulf Coast regions, Buckeye’s pipelines continued to function as key supply lines for refineries in its service territory.

1940’s -Buckeye began its first refined products pipeline operations, built new products lines in Ohio and Indiana and converted older idle crude lines to refined products service to meet emerging needs for supplying gasoline and distillates to local consumption markets.

1950’s - Buckeye extended its Midwest products network and concurrently constructed a new products pipeline system in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and New York.

1960’s and 1970’s - Buckeye was acquired by a subsidiary of the Pennsylvania Railroad, which later became The Penn Central Corporation. The company built the first products pipeline through the streets of New York City in order to serve the three major airports and commercial customers in that metropolitan region. The company acquired Jet Lines, Inc., a products pipeline system in New England.

1980’s -Buckeye implemented a major capital investment program to increase its pipeline capacities, improve service to existing markets, and initiate service to new markets. This program included the addition of new pipelines, pumping equipment, tankage, and modern control equipment. The company further increased its refined products service through the acquisition of Laurel Pipe Line Company, which serves Pennsylvania markets from Philadelphia.

1990’s -Buckeye entered the contract operations and maintenance business, with the acquisition of assets that included pipeline operating agreements for major chemical companies in the Gulf Coast region, a pipeline, and other related assets.

2000’s - The company’s terminal business operations began with the purchase of seven petroleum products terminals in Michigan, New York and Pennsylvania, and continued to expand its pipeline and terminals business through acquisition. Buckeye completed the purchase of Lodi Gas Storage, which owns and operates natural gas storage facilities in northern California. The facilities provide approximately 29 billion cubic feet of working gas capacity and serve natural gas demand in the San Francisco and Sacramento areas. Buckeye also acquired the wholesale refined products marketing operations of Farm & Home Oil Company and formed its Buckeye Energy Services business which is a wholesale distributor of refined products in the United States in areas also served by pipelines and terminals.

2010 and beyond - Buckeye completed its acquisition of Bahamas Oil Refining Company International (“BORCO”).  BORCO is the fourth largest oil and petroleum products storage terminal in the world and the largest petroleum products facility in the Caribbean with current storage capacity of 21.6 million barrels.  The acquisition significantly expanded Buckeye’s market reach by adding a global logistics hub to the company’s portfolio of assets.
