I worked at By Light Professional IT Services full-time (More than 3 years)
I worked with By Light for over four years. Of the three contracting agencies for which I worked, in my eight years (and change) contracted to the VA, I really enjoyed By Light the best. As my employee number was in the very low 200s, I was a rather early joiner of the company. They brought me in, gave me great benefits, and held by me well while my wife was very ill. The local management (PMs, PrgMs, and VPs) are amazing individuals who all know the employees who work under them. If it hadn't been a transition year in which I did not receive a contract, I would have happily stayed through the future.
They were a Service Disabled Veteran Owned Small Business until the VA made them a Large Business by getting them many contracts. Now as no longer a small business, they had a harder time getting the prime contract slot. This makes for difficulty in securing a higher value contract for a senior technical writer. Hence my layoff. The only personnel issue I ever had was with a technical lead who became quite the micro-manager and made life difficult for a while. Otherwise, the company is great.
Advice to Management
When someone is a senior employee, try to find ways to move them laterally so they can continue to be an asset to the company.
I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at By Light Professional IT Services (Charleston, SC) in November 2016.
Started with a brief interview by a recruiter before having a real interview setup with the Vice President of software development. The Interview revolved more around my education and projects I had previously worked on. We discussed technologies I've used, to what extent, and went over those that I hadn't but would be used in the project if I were to advance forward with the company. It was very relaxed, though a little hard to hear because I was on speaker-phone on their side. They were definitely seeking Go-Getters.
