CB Insights – Why Work For Us?

Our team comes to work every day to build technology that helps corporations guess less and win more.

We aggregate and analyze massive amounts of data and use machine learning, algorithms and data visualization to help corporations replace the three Gs (Google searches, gut instinct and guys with MBAs*) so they can answer massive strategic questions using probability not punditry.

Questions Like:

  • Which disruptive companies should we worry about?
  • Which emerging trends could kill us?
  • What new markets should we enter?
  • What is our competitor's strategy?
  • Who should we acquire?
  • Who should we invest in?
  • Who is our next customer?
  • Who are the S&P 500 of tomorrow?

With backing from the National Science Foundation and venture capital investors, we mine terabytes of data and knowledge contained in patents, venture capital financings, M&A transactions, hiring, startup and investor websites, news sentiment, social media chatter, and more.

Our software algorithmically analyzes this data to help our clients see where the world is going tomorrow, today.

It's time to move past the three G's. Your biggest strategic decisions deserve better.

We're growing like a week without lighting money on fire.

If you're happy, helpful, humble and hungry, we'd love to chat.

Here are a few more data points to help nudge you over.

  • We are growing by 100%+ per year.
  • We are ranked 9th in Glassdoor's Best Places to Work in 2018.
  • We are #55 on Crain's Best Places to Work in NYC in 2017.
  • We are #560 on the Inc 5000.
  • We are working on some insanely hard problems.
  • We were revenue-funded for our first 5.75 years (translation: we're a real company). We raised $10 million in VC in late 2015.
  • We were cited by the media 3000+ times last year.
  • We run the tech industry's most popular newsletter with over 425,000 subscribers (and adding 1,200 new subs per week).
  • We have lots of really smart customers fired up about our product and our vision.
  • We were named 1 of the 15 enterprise companies to watch in NYC
  • We are a Founding Partner of CSNYC whose mission is to ensure all of NYC's 1.1 million public school students have access to a high-quality computer science education.
  • Read here for 68 things NOT to do if you're a SaaS company.

We think the world would be better if fewer big decisions were made on the basis of the 3 G's - Google searches, Gut instinct and Guys with MBAs. Take look at our open positions and reach out. We'd love to tell you more about what we're working on.

It's quite simple - the People, the Product and the Personality.

In short, we have a team that can go head to head with any other tech company in the world. From engineering to biz dev to marketing to research, our team is one where the brains are big and the egos are small. We value people who have the 4 H's - they are helpful, humble, hungry and happy.

We have an industry standard product loved by customers. And we're working to extend our lead which means we're working on some very challenging technology, data and predictive analytics problems. Could software have predicted the rise of autonomous vehicles in 2006 or the importance of blockchain in 2009? We think so and that is what we're building. We're figuring out the next big thing in technology in a way that's never been done before. And we have millions in revenue and hundreds of the world's smartest corporations as clients to demonstrate what we're doing is working.

We've taken data and analytics to predict technology trends and we've made it conversational and interesting while still being thoughtful, smart and one step ahead. We're the only B2B brand that regularly tells its customers that we love them and which the media has cited over 3000 times in just the last 12 months. We also have a ton of customers who've publicly declared their love for us.

The CB Insights Engineering team enjoys solving hard problems, and there’s no shortage when you’re building the world’s most comprehensive and well-loved market analytics and intelligence platform.

Our challenges, like our team, are diverse.  A few of the questions we’ve had to answer:

  • How can we use natural language processing and machine learning to transform our firehose of raw data into coherent information?
  • How can we detect signals in our data to discover important trends, and how do we determine which trends are relevant for individual users?
  • How do we design a user experience that is simple, intuitive yet also allows our users to leverage the full value of our data and platform?

Now imagine solving these questions concurrently, while serving a broad and diverse customer base and scaling the system, data, and team.  If that excites you, and you have a love of learning and the craft of software engineering, read on.

We believe that the best technology is built collaboratively, by engineers who are dedicated to best practices and want impact - regardless of their role.  Many of our key technologies exist because they were championed by individual engineers.  Management supports us when we determine that legacy systems must be upgraded or replaced.  We’ve built a strong automated testing culture with continuous integration and daily releases to production.  We encourage teaching and learning, as it’s an investment in ourselves.  Our engineers regularly present to each other on various topics and the company offers learning opportunities and subsidies.

Sound like a good gig?  We think so.  It’s hard, but rewarding - and fun - because we’re building good software that our customers use and love.  If you agree, check out our open positions because we’re growing fast!

CB Insight’s research team is the best in the business at identifying tech trends and analyzing the momentum of tech startups, companies, and investors. Our CEO calls us the company’s “secret sauce”, and for good reason.

We were cited by the media 3000+ times last year and we run the tech industry's most popular newsletter with over 425,000 subscribers. Our reports make it into the C-suite of the world’s most influential organizations.

This job involves lots of writing, data analysis, and data visualization to create compelling research for our readers, and actionable intelligence for our clients. The research we create helps boost our brand and showcases the power of CB Insight’s software. After all, we do have access to the world’s largest, most comprehensive, and most accurate database on startups and tech at our fingertips.

We come to work every day hungry to answer the tech industry’s toughest questions. A few of the questions we get to tackle are:

  • Which companies are the game-changing disruptors of tomorrow?
  • What are the key emerging technologies?
  • How are entrenched industries changing, and what are the key threats and opportunities?

Some kickass work we’ve done recently includes:

Success on the research team means working quickly to meet deadlines without sacrificing accuracy. Expectations are high, but the impact we have on the company’s success is commensurate with those expectations.

This is a fun job! We are passionate about technology (we’re tech nerds), and we get to exercise that passion every day. We think collaboration is key. Our team is diverse, humble, and open to new ideas.

Sound like a good gig? We think so. If you do too, check out our open positions cause we’re growing fast!

The CBI Business Development and Customer Success team is the best team in modern SaaS. This is a place where you can work with the world’s top innovation, strategy, and investment teams across every industry.

We have a diverse group that ranges in experience level and expertise but has a proven record of remarkable growth.  Here are a few more things that make our team so great:

  • Best in class sales coaching culture:  We not only talk about coaching, we have training plans and dedicated people in place to ensure that everyone on the team is given the necessary coaching to be successful in their current role and grow into their future role(s).
  • Competitive (not cut throat) and collaborative:  It is engrained in our culture to help each other succeed while also holding each other accountable.
  • Transparent career progression ladders:  There is no mystery as to what you need to do to get to the next level in your career.

I have been working at CB Insights full-time (More than a year)

I've been with CB Insights over 2 years now and it keeps getting better!

    1. Product innovation: from the execs down to associates, developing new needle-moving ideas are evident. From quarterly Hack Days to really listening to customers, CB Insights keeps producing new, improved, and excellent product features and enhancements.
    2. The awesome people. I always say that I've never been around so many smart and talented folks, yet so happy, very helpful, humble, and hardworking individuals.
    3. People Ops are creating some exciting and engaging events and activities (Community Service Week, Bring Your Kids to Work Day, happy hours, cooking competition, etc.)
    4. Leadership really cares about their direct reports. My boss treats me like an adult, encourages me to grow and to reach my goals, but also sensitive enough to notice and act when I need a break and a little nudge
    5. Provides tools we need to succeed in our roles, whether organized training or various sales tools.
    6. Love the Peer2Peer program where individual folks from different departments share their skills (mostly non-work related) with the rest of the company.

Office is getting tight, even after moving some folks to a nearby satellite office. My understanding is that the company is working hard to address and resolve this concern. And our kick-a** office managers are heaven-sent for keeping our office organized and pleasant to work at.

    Advice to Management

Continue getting honest feedback from team members (whether formally via survey tools or during coffee breaks). Continue to take those feedback seriously and acting on them. I appreciate bringing in more diverse (cultural, skills, background) folks into the mix, keeps us "old-timers" on our toes :)

    Difficult Interview

I applied through a staffing agency. I interviewed at CB Insights (New York, NY) in January 2017.

First round was an online coding test with standard questions, second round was an in person situation which was more of an in depth discussion of knowledge and working with their actual system than a typical quizzing interview, and a minor code task. Also meeting with senior personnel before an offer was made.

    Interview Questions

    • They asked to solve a problem which was NOT a gotcha puzzle nor obscure algorithm trivia and showed engineering aptitude   Answer Question
    • They opened up a section of the website, and asked opinions which led to discussion of relevant engineering concepts   Answer Question
    • Allowed to bring in your own dev system, or use theirs, and given some requirements in advance of the interview, you have to demonstrate building a basic API handler.   Answer Question
