In 1969, Jim Clayton and Bill Williams raised capital from family and friends to purchase a small apartment community in Huntington Beach, California. Jim and Bill personally invested in the property and managed it themselves. In the early 1970's Jim and Bill saw an investment opportunity in undervalued mobile home parks in Texas, offering potential for growth in equity, with less risk than apartments. Sharing their vision, Steve Sherwood teamed with Bill and Jim in 1977 to create the firm of Clayton, Williams, and Sherwood. Over the next several years, the three partners embarked on an ambitious investment campaign. They acquired additional mobile home parks in Texas and other Sun Belt states. By 1986, Clayton, Williams, and Sherwood had become the largest owner and operator of mobile home parks in the United States.
In 1990, as the equity in the mobile home parks in Florida and California matured, CWS repositioned equity from these parks into apartment communities in Austin, Texas. When opportunity shifted to new construction as the region flourished, CWS developed luxury apartment communities. In late 1998, CWS formed a private REIT with Security Capital Group, and transferred their manufactured housing portfolio to form CWS Communities. The remaining entities now operate under the parent company of CWS Capital Partners, LLC.

B.R.I.D.G.E. is employee-directed, affording each employee the opportunity to find their own passion in their community. CWS donates $20 for each hour of volunteer service you complete, up to 12 hours per year. In 2014, CWS raised $65,745 in philanthropic donations, all 100% employee directed.

New Hire Orientation - Held monthly at our Austin Corporate office, this intensive course serves as an introduction to CWS and familiarizes attendees with the knowledge to perform successfully. I have been working at CWS Apartment Homes full-time
This is a fantastic organization that cares about you which I feel is leaning toward the anomaly in the property management industry. They expect work but they appreciate it and reward it. There is a very strong sense of community and work family here. Great leadership to look up to.
Do not have actual "cons" to share, the only item that seems to be shared is that the company has some growing pains and the policies have trouble keeping up.
Advice to Management
Keep doing what you are doing and continue listening to your employees and you will continue going in the right direction.
I applied through a recruiter. I interviewed at CWS Apartment Homes (Houston, TX) in December 2017.
I prepared for a thorough phone interview and was called on time. The interviewer immediately told me that they were driving which led me to believe this was going to be a quick 2 or 3 minutes. We discussed the property and what she was looking for, then I was able to briefly discuss my past experiences. I heard a lot of noises going on while I was talking and knew that my time was not being respected. After I spoke, I was told to come in for an interview the following week. I was sent an email and agreed to meet at the property. The interviewer initially did not keep our original interview time and rescheduled for an earlier time. When I arrived 10 minutes early, I was greeted warmly by the concierge and was told that the interviewer would be right with me. I had to wait close to 30 minutes until the concierge led me back to the office. How inconsiderate not to at least walk out to greet me. Then once I sat down and was asked the first question of “Can I see a copy of you’re resume?” and noticed how busy this person was texting away and the eyes reading the text messages, I then knew how much of a joke and a waste of time this was for me. All of the time and energy I have put into preparing for a thorough interview just like the next person, all just a huge waste. I do not mind speaking to HR about this particular individual as I see CWS is a reputable company with great reviews from current and past employees.
