Because we all share a common belief and mission, but bring different experiences and perspectives, we are able to work through complex problems, make good decisions, and then unite on behalf of our publishers. We’ve got super-fun Slack conversations (and gifs), awfully silly jokes of the week (and day), office happy hours, an awesome annual offsite (to Disneyworld!) and lots more (like paint nights and scavenger hunts), too.  

Our Past

Our story is similar to many other startups that ultimately find success.  Years of toiling,  hard work and multiple pivots before we finally landed on the right opportunity.  CafeMedia started 10+ years ago with the founding of our first website, CafeMom, and then more women’s lifestyle sites followed.  The good news was that we had become genuine industry leaders in programmatic advertising. The challenge was that creating original content was hard. We had talented editors and writers and traffic grew to a point, but advertisers always wanted more scale.

Our Pivot

We merged with the leading ad monetization company for high quality publishers, AdThrive.  And when our best-in-class advertising team plugged into AdThrive, we were off to the races. We sold our own websites to focus on our core competency , in turn enabling our publisher customers to focus on what they do best: creating great content.

Our Path

Today we support thousands of professional bloggers, independent content creators, and enterprise publishers, ranging from 100,000 monthly pageviews to publishers with tens of millions of monthly pageviews.  Together, they are a collective force, reaching 125 million monthly unique visitors in the U.S. with billions of monthly pageviews. By focusing on ad management, we are now growing by leaps and bounds to serve thousands more publishers.  Now we’re aiming to go far beyond ads and help our publishers in any way that we can. We’ve got lots to do!

                       

Over the last year, we’ve hired more than 40 new team members and recently crossed the 100 employee threshold.  And, we’re not done yet: our team will likely double in the coming year. While we’re growing fast, we’re also focused on developing and recognizing our world-class team. As of August 2019, 30% of people who have been with the company for over a year, have been promoted into new roles. We love when people raise their hand to get involved in new parts of the business or want to take on more responsibilities.

We invest in professional development.  We encourage everyone to spend 10 hours a month during the workday learning and growing their skillset both personally and professionally (through online and in-person training).  We hold internal Zoom meetings and Slack conversations, including a bi-weekly All-Hands, on important topics to keep everyone abreast of fast-moving industry trends. 

We’re building cross-company task forces on topics like video, privacy regulations, and other things to share knowledge and keep everyone in the loop.  We’re members of industry trade organizations and put forward team members to join panels and committees within those groups.

Our plan is two-fold: to continue to grow our core business and also pursue genuine innovation – including new platforms and strategic initiatives - that will help our publishers continue to thrive in a rapidly changing digital landscape.

Do you geek out on data?

At our “slow” times of day, we serve a million ad impressions in a minute.  At peak times, well over five million a minute. We work with more than 2,200 sites that generate billions of monthly pageviews and hundreds of millions of monthly video views..  The scale of data and transactions we’re dealing with is huge and creates tremendous opportunities to optimize and use that data.  

Because we are profitable and stable, we’re able to invest money and resources into new opportunities that will help drive our publishers’ businesses.  We aren’t worried about this quarter, we are focused on the long-term.

         

We’ve built a unique work environment where our team is split evenly between our NYC office and remote throughout the US. If you love the remote work style, we’ve built a great culture that supports and recognizes team members no matter where they are. And if you like coming into an office every day (or most days), we’ve got a great NYC office with fun team-building activities, social events, and much more.

Flexibility is in our DNA and the NYC office team works from home whenever they want, and we often welcome our remote team in our NYC office whenever they’re in the area.  We’ve had team members work while traveling, taking multi-month, working cross-country road trips. We believe that people who are great at their jobs can get the job done from anywhere, so we encourage our team to do just that.

    Pros

    The people here are wonderful - fun, incredibly smart, and supportive of each other. There's very little drama and everyone's primary focus is doing right by the publishers we serve, which is thoroughly fulfilling work. I feel valued and respected in my position, and I'm afforded a lot of autonomy. Every manager I've had has gone out of their way to make sure I was happy and fulfilled in my work, and I'm constantly encouraged to share if there are any facets of the business I'm interested in getting involved in. I've seen a number of employees allowed to shape a new role for themselves, given their interests and the needs of the company. Upper management are all very approachable, including the CEO, and all employees' ideas and opinions are valued. The flexibility to work remotely is invaluable. To top it all off, the benefits are great. I worked at CafeMedia before the acquisition of AdThrive and the sale of the owned and operated sites, and although I enjoyed my job when I started, CafeMedia now feels like a warmer, stronger, more exciting, and more inspired company.
