Pros
Graduate students are the main population, so they have more say with the administration. It is more of a working research institute than typical university.Cons
It is a bit of a pressure cooker environment. All answers shown come directly from Caltech (California) Reviews and are not edited or altered.

I applied online. The process took 4 months. I interviewed at Caltech (California) (United States)
Interview
Online system blocked my email. Sent message to Caltech help email who responded saying use another email. I used my backup email and submitted the application. Caltech responded to my original blocked email to catch my attention and schedule a call. Brief screening call from the manager went fine. Followed by a 9-person video call interview, days later, which lasted over one hour (same manager + 8 physical scientists). Interview was 98% fine and mostly behavior questions, some technical computing questions, questions about my experience. Mostly a relaxed tone and professional exchange. The Americans seemed to not care at all sharing a lazy attitude, the foreigners were completely opposite and appreciated their workplace. All physical scientists were top notch researchers and IT staff, and were very capable professionals (which matched my level). Lone manager was a very different story. Manager announced that “You need to get yelled at” in a bullying tone, on camera in front all members. I gave him an odd look, kept cool and proceeded with the interview. Very strange comment for a candidate and was not expecting it. Manager said we’ll follow up with you within two weeks, on camera looking at me. Follow-up phone call by me was ignored. They’ve been ghosting me for +4 months, republished the identical job description several times, and obviously lied about their following up. It’s obvious Caltech has an "incompetent, bully manager" problem.Diversity Commitment
Has programs that support a diverse and inclusive workforce
