From science to the City: Why financial services consulting could be right for STEM graduates

I'm all too familiar with the pains of studying a STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) degree. Familiar with the struggle that goes with pages of math texts containing more numbers than letters, hundreds of lines of code ruined by the omission of a semicolon, and days on end spent in the laboratory trying to obtain reasonable scientific results by any (and sometimes questionable) means necessary.

Capco – Why Work For Us?

Capco is a global management consultancy with a focus in financial services including banking and payments, capital markets, and wealth and asset management. Our professionals combine innovative thinking with our unrivalled first-hand industry knowledge to offer our clients consulting expertise, complex technology and package integration, and managed services to move their organizations forward. Through our collaborative and efficient approach, we help our clients successfully, innovate, increase revenue, manage risk and regulatory change, reduce costs and enhance control. We serve our clients from offices in leading business centers across North America, Europe, Asia Pacific and Africa.

We work closely with our clients to understand the challenges and opportunities they face, and help them prepare for a radically changing landscape in financial services. We begin with a robust strategic understanding, and then we go further.  We perform in-depth assessments, create transformation roadmaps and provide implementation solutions.  These include managing complexity, prediction and control of risk, and practical responses to regulation that enable our clients to go ‘beyond compliance’.

Forming the Future of Finance

Partnering with our clients and the wider industry, we aim to continuously form the future of finance. This means we are not restricted to an external consulting role. Through the respected Capco Institute and our award-winning and independent Capco Journal of Financial Transformation, we actively participate in discussions and explorations of key industry issues.

We work hard to maintain an inclusive culture, where people are consistently at the heart of our agenda. We look to actively engage all our people and to give them a platform for continuous career development. We foster a work environment where they can grow personally as well as professionally, and be themselves at work. Capco is also committed to giving back to our local communities through multiple volunteer events and initiatives sponsored by our corporate social responsibility team.

Sports. Team events. Happy Hours.  Milestone Schools. Townhalls.  There is always something happening beyond work at Capco. With our extended Capco family of unique and talented individuals, it is no surprise that we enjoy spending downtime with the people who make Capco such a great place to work. We truly believe if you find a job you love, you will never work a day in your life. Join us and experience for yourself why we think you will love Capco.

    Pros

Whether you're just starting your career, or transitioning from an industry role, Capco fosters an environment to grow both professionally and personally. Capco puts you in control of your career while supporting your goals and challenging you with a mixture of opportunities. Highly recommend this firm to those that have an entrepreneurial mindset and are motivated to stretch themselves.

    Cons

Similar to most consulting firms, your work/life balance will depend on your staffing assignment. Additionally, there have been lots of changes in leadership but Capco's core values/cultural remain intact.

    Advice to Management

Continue to empower employees to own their careers while remaining true to the cultural legacy that makes Capco so great.

    Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 4+ weeks. I interviewed at Capco (New York, NY).

    Interview

My first round was a phone interview from someone in HR. It was pretty standard; vetted me, my resume and my experiences. Make sure you know basic Capco info.

Second and final round was at the NYC HQ, for something called the Assessment Center Day. There are three parts to the entire day, and you're split up into groups that you travel with for each of those three parts:
The first part was a series of rapid fire questions, where you speak to 6 people for 5 minutes each. Consists of questions about Capco, yourself and brain teasers/estimation questions.

The second part was a timed email activity where you read a packet of info and are asked to summarize certain items for your boss.

The third part was a group case activity. You and your group are supposed to come up with a plan to help a bank expand digitally and appeal to younger customers. You're given 30 minutes to plan and 10 minutes to present.

Overall a really pleasant experience. All the employees are extremely nice, helpful and welcoming. At the end of the day, you sit in a Partner Q&A session and you can tell they really like working at the company and with each other just from the way they interact and how they answer questions.
