Employee Spotlight: Field Sales Engineer - LifeAtCb

As companies experience major changes, such as growth, going public, organizational shifts, and the like, it's not uncommon for employees to consider new opportunities elsewhere. It's a fact of life. But, having employees come back after some time away can show the strength a company's culture, so much so that it leaves a lasting impression.

Carbon Black is tackling some of the world’s toughest challenges and our people are up for the task.

Take a peek behind the curtain at what it’s like to be part of the Cb Team. We feel incredibly lucky to be part of a group of people working hard on a mission together. It’s challenging, exciting, and incredibly rewarding. We hope you think so too.

High Performance Teams

As part of the Cb Team, your individual ambition will be propelled by true partnership, the right resources, and a defined path to success. “Team” isn’t just a word we use here, it’s the basic core of who we are and how we approach the big mission we’ve set for ourselves. Here, you’re part of an interconnected network of extremely talented, driven people as committed to your success as they are their own.

Dedicated Culture

We’re incredibly proud that as we’ve grown, our culture has remained steadfast. At its core? Collaboration, camaraderie, and collective hard work without egos or pretense. Nearly every company says they work and play hard—and we do. But it’s much more than that. There’s a dedication to one another that’s palpable. What’s more, we have a respect for the commitments we all have outside of work—and the trust and flexibility to attend to them.

Authentic Leadership

You know the feeling when someone empowers you, inspires you, and challenges you? We sure do. Our leaders are some of the best we’ve encountered at charting a clear course for success, and connecting and communicating on an individual level. Open doors—and open lines of communication—are the norm. Great ideas are championed, no matter the source. You’re given the resources, support, and freedom to do your work, your way. Sound different? Sound exciting? It is.

Our engineers have big brains (without big egos).

Do you do your best work while part of a high-powered, hard-working team? You've found your match. Our engineering and product organizations are made up of diverse, creative people who aren’t scared to voice their own opinions or take chances on new ideas. As a cybersecurity company that’s scaling in the cloud, everyone who walks through the door each day is empowered to create something great.

How about working on the cutting edge of the cutting edge? That’s a given here and, as such, the pace is fast. Whether you like to pull things apart and dig deeper, build new platforms, or play in the cloud, opportunities abound.

Commitment to Agile

In 2017, our product team went through a major Agile Transformation. All employees adopted this new way of working to establish better collaboration within and across teams.

Engineering and Product at Carbon Black

Carbon Black's commitment to helping people succeed truly makes a difference in the way we innovate.

Unique ideas come from unique perspectives.

Diversity is our present and our future here at Carbon Black. We strive to continuously create a more diverse and inclusive team, one that enables everyone to pursue their greatness and work together seamlessly toward our common goal. It’s only through deep pride in what we do and for the people who work hard to get us there that we’ve gotten where we are—and continuing to celebrate and embrace individual talents and perspectives is the only way we can continuously redefine the world of cybersecurity and technology.

Our Dedication to Women

Carbon black is committed to supporting our women so they can grow their careers. With new programs, such as our women empowerment community called the Cigar Room, our mentorship program, and our investment to send women to select conferences (such as Grace Hopper and Mass Conference for Women), women at Carbon Black continue to thrive.

Our Promise

Carbon Black is committed to equality in the workplace. We’re taking active measures to attract, hire, and support diverse people and thoughts, ensuring all employees feel welcomed, empowered, and heard.

To support this, we've made a Cb Diversity Pledge, are a participant with the Parity Pledge, support the MA Businesses for Freedom Coalition, and was a participant in the Top Companies for Women Technologists.

    Approves of CEO

I have been working at Carbon Black full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Opportunity to grow cyber security knowledge which is in high demand
Remote work opportunities - Large remote contingent means your not "That person on the phone" because everyone is one video conference and Slack (mostly level playing field for remote employees)
    Working with a great team
The executive team seems to really be on the ball
Has a great mission and really works towards it - "A world safe from cyber attacks!"
Very low BS. As CEO says, "We need to reduce the friction" and they follow through on it.

    Cons

    Mountain of technical debt
CI/CD is maturing, but has a long way to go
    Whiny millenials

    Advice to Management

Keep the level of friction low as the company continues to quickly grow.
Don't let investors ruin a great company and culture.
Get developers talking to users more.

    Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Carbon Black in November 2017.

    Interview

The initial contact was initiated within 2 days of my application. An initial phone screen with the recruiter then the hiring manager happened on the next day. After that, there were a couple more phone screens (due to location) and a coding test over the next week. I then had an on-site interview with 5 people. After that, it was waiting for an offer.
During the whole process, I was kept informed of the next steps by the recruiter in a timely manner, and the pacing of the process was comfortable. They appreciated that I had existing responsibilities with my current employer, and were flexible with scheduling.
