Under the hood: Inside the tech stacks of 6 Colorado companies

Behind every great tech product is a stack of development tools - languages, frameworks and software - that help bring it to life, and rarely are two tech stacks exactly the same. In order to get more insight into the building blocks of their technology, we asked six local engineers to give us a peek under the hood and explain more about the tools their teams rely on.

Carbon Black is tackling some of the world’s toughest challenges and our people are up for the task.

Take a peek behind the curtain at what it’s like to be part of the CB Team. We feel incredibly lucky to be part of a group of people working hard on a mission together. It’s challenging, exciting, and incredibly rewarding. We hope you think so too.

High-Performance Teams

As part of the CB Team, your individual ambition will be propelled by true partnership, the right resources, and a defined path to success. “Team” isn’t just a word we use here, it’s the basic core of who we are and how we approach the big mission we’ve set for ourselves. Here, you’re part of an interconnected network of extremely talented, driven people as committed to your success as they are their own.

Dedicated Culture

We’re incredibly proud that as we’ve grown, our culture has remained steadfast. At its core? Collaboration, camaraderie, and collective hard work without egos or pretense. Nearly every company says they work and play hard—and we do. But it’s much more than that. There’s a dedication to one another that’s palpable. What’s more, we have a respect for the commitments we all have outside of work—and the trust and flexibility to attend to them.

Authentic Leadership

You know the feeling when someone empowers you, inspires you, and challenges you? We sure do. Our leaders are some of the best we’ve encountered at charting a clear course for success, and connecting and communicating on an individual level. Open doors—and open lines of communication—are the norm. Great ideas are championed, no matter the source. You’re given the resources, support, and freedom to do your work, your way. Sound different? Sound exciting? It is.

Our engineers have big brains (without big egos).

Do you do your best work while part of a high-powered, hard-working team? You've found your match. Our engineering and product organizations are made up of diverse, creative people who aren’t scared to voice their own opinions or take chances on new ideas. As a cybersecurity company that’s scaling in the cloud, everyone who walks through the door each day is empowered to create something great.

How about working on the cutting edge of the cutting edge? That’s a given here and, as such, the pace is fast. Whether you like to pull things apart and dig deeper, build new platforms, or play in the cloud, opportunities abound.

Commitment to Agile

In 2017, our product team went through a major Agile Transformation. All employees adopted this new way of working to establish better collaboration within and across teams.

Unique ideas come from unique perspectives.

Diversity is our present and our future here at Carbon Black. We strive to continuously create a more diverse and inclusive team, one that enables everyone to pursue their greatness and work together seamlessly toward our common goal. It’s only through deep pride in what we do and for the people who work hard to get us there that we’ve gotten where we are—and continuing to celebrate and embrace individual talents and perspectives is the only way we can continuously redefine the world of cybersecurity and technology.

"I believe a diverse workforce with an inclusive culture leads to greatness. We make better decisions for our company, our customers, and our people with diverse thinking around the table, at every level. I'm proud of the work we've done to create a strong company culture that's stayed steadfast throughout our change and growth. I look forward to the future of Carbon Black as we continue to build and support a diverse and inclusive company for our people." - Patrick Morley, CEO of Carbon Black

I have been working at Carbon Black full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Cb is an excellent company with very smart, hard-working people. The products are something I am very proud to stand behind and our customers are second to none. I've watched this company grow from Bit9 to Bit9+Cb and now Cb, from under 200 to over 1200 employees in just a few years. That is a big deal, and though it hasn't been 100% smooth, nothing worth doing or fully standing behind will be perfect all the time. This is a company that wants to help others and succeed at the same time and we are successfully doing both and learning/adapting along the way. Also, the benefits are very good which is important.

    Cons

    Growing pains
    Constant changes
    Some politics
Not everyone is as friendly and welcoming as when the company was smaller, but people are still very nice in general.

    Advice to Management

Continue to value your employees, use a bit more caution with internal promotions (some promotions may be a bit premature) and continue with the transparency.

    Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Carbon Black in November 2017.

    Interview

The initial contact was initiated within 2 days of my application. An initial phone screen with the recruiter then the hiring manager happened on the next day. After that, there were a couple more phone screens (due to location) and a coding test over the next week. I then had an on-site interview with 5 people. After that, it was waiting for an offer.
During the whole process, I was kept informed of the next steps by the recruiter in a timely manner, and the pacing of the process was comfortable. They appreciated that I had existing responsibilities with my current employer, and were flexible with scheduling.
