Product and Tech's team event, 'Beercade', was the perfect combination of bonding, brews, and battling it out over Guitar Hero! #CarteFam

  • October's Employee Spotlight goes to (drum roll please)…… Sam Lange!

The wizard Implementation Support Specialist continues to earn his stripes (stars) on recent project work with Highlands County, FL:

"Sam was wonderful throughout this whole project. We are extremely grateful for all that was accomplished with the project and can honestly say we achieved what we needed ... Sam is a HUGE asset to Cartegraph. He is amazing at explaining things and he has impressed us with his ability to understand our "Not So Normal" functions we do in our department."

Software Engineer Interns 2019

Internship Opportunities

Software Engineer Interns

Looking to code with a purpose? Solve problems that matter? Bulk up that resume? Fight the national infrastructure crisis head on? Well, then keep on reading!

Every September, we look for talented, motivated individuals to create web applications and hybrid mobile apps for iOS and Android for high-performance government organizations. From May-August, you’ll get the opportunity to:

  •         Write beautiful code using C#, JavaScript, and TypeScript
  •          Use software frameworks such as Ionic, Knockout, and Angular
  •          Work on flagship products and ship features directly to customers
  •          Experience a truly agile software development process
  •          Be mentored by the best software engineers in the industry
  •          Participate in the Talent Dubuque intern engagement program

We think this is a stellar internship, but don’t take our word for it. Here’s what our previous software engineer interns had to say about their experiences:

“I have learned about all the processes of developing software that are not just coding, as well as improving my coding skills. This internship has provided me with valuable software engineering experience that I need to pursue a career in this field.” – Dustin Welu, Computer Science major at Iowa State University

“Cartegraph simply has the best team of people. During my internship, I was able to learn from honest, understanding, and fun software engineers. My team supported me all the way through my experience. At Cartegraph, I was able to develop my programming skills in Typescript and C#. Additionally, Cartegraph provided me with a great example of agile software development. Overall, I enjoyed learning what it's really like to be a software engineer.”  -Allison Lemke, Computer Science and Mathematics major at Wartburg College

“The workflow and environment are structured in such a way to help interns apply knowledge from school as well as learn other technical skills that you don't get to see or experience in a classroom. You can take time learning angular/JavaScript if you aren't familiar with it, at first, and there are people you can watch/learn from on your team. Once you are comfortable, you can take on tasks during the feature and get helpful feedback on your work. You can grow at your own pace and be as challenged as you need to be to learn productively.” - Aaron Riggs, Computer Science major at the University of Northern Iowa

I have been working at Cartegraph full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

-Rewarding work: you're helping local governments become more effective and efficient for their citizens; you're improving the quality life of citizens across the country. And, that's pretty cool. -Midwest nice: everyone here is incredibly smart, kind, and talented. They're the best at what they do, and they genuinely want to pitch in and help to provide our customers with the best experience possible. When I first started working here, I was waiting for the ball to drop and for people to start acting rude or catty like at other places I've worked...and I've been waiting years. It's never happened. Everyone is genuine and a joy to work with. -Super supportive: management respects your talents and get out of your way so you can do what you need to do. There's no red tape, micromanaging, or super long approval processes. If you have an idea, you can run with it, and you have the full support of your boss and the company. The company is also big into setting goals, celebrating wins (big or small), and recognizing when people have gone over and above or achieved something special. -Flexibility: the culture supports a remote work environment, and you can work from home from time-to-time, even if you're based out of the main office. They don't make you take a half day to go to a 1-hour doctor appointment: they respect you and understand that life happens, and they give you flexibility in your schedule when you need it. -Clarity: there's no question about our company goals or what we're trying to achieve. Everyone knows what we're shooting for, has team goals working toward our overall company objectives, and knows how their work feeds into the mission, vision, and values of the company. -Positive perks: benefits are pretty good, you get a decent amount of time off, and you get a partially-funded sabbatical when you hit 5 years. There's free snacks, fresh fruit, coffees, and teas. They support continued education, will pay for you to attend industry events, and everyone in the company gets a free Udemy account for online courses. They have fun team and company events/outings, and the holiday parties are always awesome.

    Cons

-You're limited in terms of career growth at the company. They are pretty lax on the review process, and you just kind of stay at your title level unless you move to upper management. There isn't a bar set for you to keep progressing beyond where you're at. -Compensation and title levels are lower than industry standards. They don't really take experience and advanced education into consideration with your salary or hourly pay. -A lot of change. A fair amount of employee turnover and a lot of new hires.

    Advice to Management

-Improve the onboarding process so everyone starts at the company with a firm foundation. -Create a more standard employee review process. Let everyone know when it's going to be every year, have a set of standards that will be reviewed with each employee, and give them time to give their feedback. -Review approach to employee salaries and titles -Don't lose sight of how you've gotten to where you are. Try not to grow too fast and start skimping on our values and what makes this a great place to work.

    Software Engineer Interview

    Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Cartegraph (Dubuque, IA) in November 2014.

    Interview

The interview process was pretty straightforward. I applied online, a week or so later I got an email back about scheduling an interview. The interview was entirely behavioral, as there was no technical questions at all. It was formal, but very relaxed, as the three people I interviewed with were very friendly. After the interview it took a couple weeks to hear back. I would've liked to hear back sooner after the interview, but each company is different.
