At Central, Culture is Everything and it is the theme of our 2019 Annual Report. Recent events have proven that now, more than ever, culture is more important than anything else we do. In the report, five Central employees share stories that demonstrate how we live our culture every day to fulfill our promises to our agents, our policyholders, and each other! A big thank you to the employees who were willing to share their stories with us! The digital version of the full report is available on central-insurance.com.
Central appreciates the shout out by Steve Harvill and Creative Ventures in this video. We could not be more proud to share our cultural journey with the world. Our employees are amazing! #cultureiseverything https://youtu.be/MZYUSPVNFBs
Central Insurance Companies provides challenging and rewarding employment opportunities in many different areas. We employ approximately 590 employees who provide service for over 370,000 insurance policies through more than 480 independent agencies. We understand that our employees are the key to our past and future success and we are proud of the experience of our staff members. The average length of service for all employees is almost 16 years; 82 percent of our people have 5 or more years of service, 61 percent have 10 or more years, 25 percent have 25 or more years, and 17 percent have 30 or more years of service with Central.
The Central tradition is one of friendly, informal, yet professional service, and we continually work with our independent agents to provide policyholders the best insurance protection possible at a reasonable cost. We are committed to providing our employees the necessary developmental and technological tools to continue to meet our high service standards.
Central provides employees with a generous package of benefits which allows employees to effectively cover various life events as well as help them build a sound personal financial future. The following describes the various benefit plans in the most general terms. Actual benefits are subject to the terms, conditions, and exclusions found in the plan documents and their Summary Plan Descriptions.
Central’s core values include Integrity, Relationships, and Excellence. An important component of Excellence is the commitment to learning and development.
Central firmly believes that one of the best investments a company can make is to develop its employees actively. The insurance industry is continually evolving, and real success is based on not only meeting the needs of today but tomorrow as well. The tremendous emphasis on the development of employees assures that Central will be fully equipped to meet the exciting challenges the insurance industry provides.
Entry-level training provides a basic knowledge of insurance. This knowledge is accomplished through a combination of self-study courses, in-house workshops, and on-the-job training. Experienced personnel is readily available to answer questions and offer insight. Central utilizes an informal training atmosphere, recognizing that not all employees learn at the same pace. This awareness assures the trainee of an onboarding program that is challenging, flexible and best suited for the individuals' learning needs.
Central also offers all employees the opportunity to continue their learning after the initial on-boarding. Central's support and encouragement of employees who wish to enroll in a variety of professional insurance training and education programs is a significant benefit.
Employees have the opportunity to discuss further development with their manager or supervisor on an annual basis. A written development plan can help employees meet or exceed their performance standards, assist them in becoming familiar with new procedures, provide cross training, prepare them for additional responsibility, and help them maintain their level of professional expertise.
Central is a strong supporter of the educational opportunities available through The Institutes (formerly the Insurance Institute of America and the American Institute for Chartered Property Casualty Underwriters). Interested employees can increase their insurance knowledge through self-study or class participation. Employees are allotted one hour of study time per week to prepare for the national exams. Reimbursement of the registration fee is available after the successful completion of an exam. In addition, Central recognizes program completers with an annual luncheon and an honorarium.
In-house company workshops are offered periodically to assist employees with their training and development goals. Central has an extensive library of books, videos, and DVDs to assist employees in a variety of areas.
Responsibilities, Standards and Measurements Program
Our Responsibilities, Standards, and Measurements Program answers three essential questions for the employee:
With result-oriented responsibilities identified and expected results outlined, managers and supervisors can measure performance objectively and compensate employees equitably.
Central takes pride in its policy of advancing qualified employees from within its organization to positions of higher responsibility. We have a constant need for people who have the ability and desire to assume increased responsibilities. Our job opportunity program informs employees about open positions. The qualifications and duties are listed so employees can compare their skills and experience with those needed for the posted areas.
Our performance appraisal program focuses on how well each employee performs the responsibilities of his or her job, not on personal attributes or characteristics. It provides employees and their supervisors with a formal way to discuss current job performance and mutually-agreed upon goals for improvement. It provides management with an objective way to reward employee achievement.
The primary objective of Central's salary administration program is to attract, motivate, and retain the most highly-qualified individuals available to staff our company. Specific responsibilities and qualifications determine starting salaries, and individual performance and growth determine salary progress.
Central Insurance Companies embraces a culture based on our core values of integrity, relationships, and excellence. These values define who we are and what we do, as individuals and as a company.
Integrity. An insurance policy is essentially a promise to provide protection, security, and peace of mind to our policyholders. Central employees are committed to fulfilling these promises every day by offering quality products, operating a stable company with sound investments, and providing outstanding customer service.
Relationships. These are the building blocks of our company. We value the relationships we build with our policyholders, our agents, and each other. Central fosters a supportive environment for personal and professional growth, where each individual is valued for the unique skills and talents they bring to the organization. This is primarily why many of our employees have been with the company 10 years or longer.
Excellence. At Central, we continually challenge ourselves to achieve more. We believe in investing in our people through learning and skill development, encouraging innovation and creativity, and providing strong leadership from visionaries who truly care about each employee. Setting such high standards is how Central attracts the most talented people for our team and is what makes us an excellent insurance company.
I have been working at Central Insurance Companies full-time (More than 10 years)
Work/life balance, flexible schedule, pension, great benefits, supportive management team
Can’t think of any cons
I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2+ months. I interviewed at Central Insurance Companies (Van Wert, OH).
Contacted by a recruiter, followed by the HR Manager, went through approximately 10 interviews. Was not offered the role nor contacted by Central to inform me that I wasn't offered the role (which is contrary to one of their core values of integrity). Experience was fine up until that point, the ending of the process left me with a negative feeling about the company, as I invested significant time and resources to interview. The least that could've been done was a phone call or an email.
