I have been working at Chartboost (Less than a year)
There are some really amazing people at Chartboost, in the engineering organization and in the business and product teams.
There is a lot of good work to be done at Chartboost, taking the company from its scrappy startup roots to a more sustainable position takes a lot.
Work life balance is great (at least within engineering), hours are flexible, WFH is flexible, PTO is very flexible.
Lunches are good.
The office is decent, not nearly as colorful or fun as the old 420 Taylor office, that place was magical. At least we still have Buster the dinosaur in the lunch room (14ft tall statue of a t-rex).
The executive team touts transparency as a core value, yet they do a terrible job communicating what their plans are for the company until we're halfway through execution.
Certain individuals were promoted far beyond their experience/abilities without the appropriate mentorship/support. One of them has recently left the company, hopefully the others will soon follow.
Compensation is below market by about 20-40k for all engineering positions and levels.
No 401k matching.
Some perks were cut (Wednesday lunch, $200/mo in Lyft credits) and nothing was done to make up for it.
Advice to Management
Ask people before you make decisions that impact them.
If you can't or don't want to their input on a decision, make sure you explain WHY you came to the decision. This will earn you the respect of your employees.
If a project is put on the roadmap and you realize halfway through execution that it is not a good thing to do, you can't just cut it and sweep it under the rug. Own your decisions, tell people WHY you are cutting the project.
Admit when you make mistakes.
If something goes wrong, own it. Do your best to explain your understanding of why it happened and how you are going to learn from this experience and prevent it from happening again in the future. You have the chance to re-gain the respect of your employees, don't let it go to waste!
Some bad hires were made, manage those people out before the cause everyone on their team to quit.
I applied through a recruiter. The process took 3 days. I interviewed at Chartboost (San Francisco, CA) in March 2017.
They called me for an hour long interview with VP of products and after days I met with the team. The process was pretty good as I was interviewed by PMs, Director of engineers and Data scientist.
