Workplace Flexibility

This is MyLIFE | Mitch Berman

Tax Partner | Bethesda Office

Mitch came to Cherry Bekaert as part of the August 2015 CBIZ acquisition. A lifelong basketball fan, he has been playing since middle school and has also coached both his children. Once his children completed high school, Mitch followed his passion and became a certified International Association of Approved Basketball Officials (IAABO) referee. His officiating duties include private and public school varsity, junior varsity and recreational leagues. At times this means up to 10 afternoon, evening and weekend games per week.

1. How did you first realize that workplace flexibility might fit your needs?

As soon as we came onboard, I got the sense that getting the work done and doing it well is much more important here at Cherry Bekaert than just putting in face time at the office. It’s a real advantage to have all the tools and flexibility that allow people to work from home at any time. Sometimes I actually feel more efficient at home because I don’t get interruptions when I’m trying to focus.

2. What changes have you seen since you started using MyLIFE flexibility?

Workplace flexibility facilitates the ability to spend time away from the office during the work day. Officiating helps me disconnect from the office and shut everything else out, especially workplace stress. Once on the court I must focus on what’s happening within the game. The flexibility also helps me meet MyFIT Goals as I generally run three to five miles per game. This helps keep me healthy and in shape and more engaged when in the office.

3. How have your coworkers/clients reacted?

Many ask about the games because some of the athletes get written up in the newspaper and many staff and clients still identify with the schools that I officiate. There have never been repercussions for leaving early because I make sure the work always gets done. This flexibility is a gift and having it pushes me harder and to be better, at work and at home.

4. What advice would you give to colleagues who are juggling with work/life balance?

If you’re not sure what options you have, ask one of the partners. Let them know what concerns you’re having. You’d be surprised at what can be worked out. If you can make it work, the Firm can make it work. People here will bend over backwards to help out and make it work for you.
They care. I work hard and play hard; not just officiating. My family and I are constantly on the move and that's why I appreciate having a challenging career that is also always changing and flexible.

Senior Billing Specialist | Atlanta Practice

My husband, Chris, and I have a four- month old baby named Amos, and a crazy labradoodle, Wallace. We are a two-career family – Chris is a UX designer. We live 25 miles north of our Atlanta office, but with traffic that’s a commute of almost two hours. As a family we love traveling, watching SEC football, and just being together.

1. How did you first realize that workplace flexibility might fit your needs?

Several years ago, we moved when my husband was transferred. My manager and I worked out a plan allowing me to work remotely for a trial period. We all discovered that it worked better than anticipated! We recently moved back to Georgia and I continued with a flexible arrangement, split between working in the office and remotely.

In June, Chris and I adopted our son (with help from our Adoption Assistance Plan), and I again asked about options. The adoption happened very quickly, so I needed immediate schedule changes and everyone on my team came together to make it possible. I still hold normal business hours, working remotely with weekly trips to the office.

While I have family to help out with child care, the flexibility to not miss out on these early days of Amos’ life is such a weight off my shoulders. I have been with Cherry Bekaert for almost 11 years and can truly vouch that it is one of the best places to work. Throughout my time here I’ve had flexibility. I simply couldn’t ask for a more supportive company.

2. What changes have you seen since you started using MyLIFE flexibility?

The biggest change has been my sanity! Atlanta traffic is an absolute nightmare; any time of day really. Scaling that down to one or two days a week is a life saver. It allows me to put in a full day at work and give my family quality time instead of a grumpy wife/mom after hours in traffic.

For my role specifically, the remote working situation has allowed our entire billing team to work through best practices for running a mostly paperless billing department.

3. How have your coworkers/clients reacted?

My coworkers have been very supportive and understanding of my flexible schedule. I am always available by phone and email, and I always communicate any scheduling changes outside of the norm.

4. What advice would you give to colleagues who are juggling with work/life balance?

The best advice I can offer is to reach out to your manager with your concerns/needs. There are options! I feel like often times there are ways to offer flexibility but people are scared to ask. Life is far too short to be miserable!

Senior Accountant | Raleigh Practice

Mike recently made the decision to formally reduce his hours and work part-time.  He and his wife, Linda, are first-time grandparents to nine-month old Graeme.  Linda is retired and Mike is in his third year with Cherry Bekaert.  With an expertise in data analytics, fraud and statistics, his work spans all our service lines.  As a family, the Blakley's enjoy hiking, biking, kayaking and bird watching.

1.     How did you first realize that workplace flexiblity might fit your needs?

Graeme was born while I was on an engagement about 130 miles away.  From there I went directly to another engagement 250 miles away.  This kept me from seeing him until he was discharged from the hospital.  The next four months were also heavily scheduled, so I asked about going part time after my work load lightened.  I felt that working part time could provide the flexibility that I needed.

2.     What changes have you seen since you started using MyLIFE flexibility?

My work arrangement does not call for a specific schedule.  I work only when asked and I'm able to do a lot of work remotely.  Nevertheless, I do come into the office regularly.  Partly this is because my wife tells me, "I married you for better or for worse, not for breakfast, lunch and dinner!" Now I divide my time between the office, my grandson and hiking the local trails with my two lab mutts.  Physically, I feel much better and having the work flexibility is invigorating. Downside is that I now have more chores due to free time!

3.     How have your coworkers/clients reacted?

Most coworkers tell me they'd also like to work part time if they could.  I haven't had any negative reactions at all.

4.     What advice would you give to colleagues who are juggling with work/life balance?

My mantra has always been "Do what you love, love what you do." That should always be your goal. Luckily for us, the Firm is very supportive of that.

Tax Partner | Virginia Beach/Richmond Practice

Matt and his wife, Ashley, are a two-career couple and the busy parents of 2-year old Camden. The family lives in Virginia Beach but Matt is frequently in the Richmond office. As a market manager for a government contractor, Ashley has an even more demanding travel schedule that has her on the road at least 8 – 10 days each month. As a family, the Brady’s enjoy traveling, focusing on health and fitness, and spending as much time as possible on the beach and with family.

1.     How did you first realize that workplace flexibility might fit your needs?

I looked into workplace flexibility during my job search. I joined the Firm three months before Camden was born. Our Paternity Leave and MyLIFE programs were more generous than what was offered by my previous employers. They were definite factors in my decision to join the Firm.

2.     What changes have you seen since you started using MyLIFE flexibility?

We want to spend as much time with Camden as possible and we can plan out our work days and travel schedules at the beginning of each month. Camden is in daycare and we’re lucky to have grandparents nearby who help out as needed. But I never realized how often infants and toddlers are under the weather. Luckily we can accommodate last minute schedule changes based on who has less to cancel, who’s nearby, who can drop off later or pick him up earlier.

3.     How have your coworkers/clients reacted?

My availability is open by phone and email and for the most part, my schedule is not erratic. Sometimes I do have to run out of the office. I’m very open with my clients and they know I’ll deliver the expected work in a timely fashion. My coworkers are compassionate and supportive too. As long as the work is done well and on time, this works really well. The Firm and my coworkers give me the benefit of the doubt as long as I perform, so the MyLife initiative works well for me.

4.     What advice would you give to colleagues who are juggling with work/life balance?

Learn about the options we offer. Be open and honest about your commitments inside and outside of work. Set realistic expectations. Plan ahead and communicate often.

During the summer of 2016, Cherry Bekaert associates overwhelmingly responded to the firm’s first Firm-wide Volunteer Week. Cherry Bekaert, as One Firm, joined together to make a difference through “Investing in our future by helping our youth.”  We had more than 750 volunteers working about 3,000 hours at 20+ organizations across all our markets, improving the lives of youths in the communities where we live and work.

    I applied through college or university. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Cherry Bekaert (Miami, FL) in October 2016.


    Process took roughly 3 weeks, applied through university career fair. Consisted of on campus, and office interviews. Very positive experience, everyone was extremely nice, and in general really seemed to want to get to know their candidates. Interview offers via email, verbal offer over phone, followed by written offer through email.
