Cornell an Assisted Living Manager
Next month I am happy to say that I will be celebrating 10 years with Christian Care. I started my journey June of 2007 as a certified caregiver. Currently I am the Director of Assisted Living. I am very grateful for the opportunities I have been given to learn, grown and develop the skills to provide quality care and services to our residents. I am also grateful that I am able work alongside others who shares the same values and goals of caring for others. As I reflect on my opportunities and experiences, I must say that there’s a few that really stands out. In 2009 I participate in a managers training program with my boss. In 2011 I was nominated to participate in the Leading Age Leadership Academy. I was also a part of Christian Care’s 5-year leadership development program. I must say I am blessed to be a part of this organization.

On February 5, 2014 I accepted a position as a wait staff in the Manor 2 Dining Room on the Phoenix Campus. To me this position was nothing more than a paycheck. At that point I did not know that my life, career and passion for food would soon change as I became part of an amazing family. Over the years I have embraced the challenges presented to me. I have worked through numerous positions, growing within the company, to become the Lead Cook in the Fellowship Square Kitchen. I enjoy coming to work on a daily basis, learning new menu items and pushing myself to excel at all opportunities placed before me. I want to thank my co-workers for their support and guidance, especially David Matamoros. I also want to thank my managers, Eric Kirby and David Elliott, for believing, teaching and showing me a bright path to success.

My name is Bernie Warren. I’ve worked for Christian Care for 5 years (in May). I work in the housekeeping department. I love coming to work every day because I know I will have helped someone and made their day a little easier. My name is Damion Wade. I am with the transportation department. I have had the pleasure of driving our precious residents around for 2 years and 5 months. How do I know the exact time I have been working here? I absolutely treasure our people. I look forward to coming to work. I always thought that being happy at a job was impossible, until I started working for Christian Care. They seem to hire the right people to fit in the right places. My coworkers are helpful and look to give themselves up for the greater good of each other. The environment at Christian Care is unique. Before coming to Christian Care, I worked for a medical transportation company for 6 years. I have traveled all over the valley and have been in pretty much every care facility you can think of. In 1979, a handful of devoted Christians recognized an opportunity to minister to Arizona seniors (particularly those with little financial resources) by offering affordable nursing care. Realizing the need, they formed a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and named it Christian Care.
In 1980, the cornerstone was laid for a sixty eight-bed "Skilled Care Nursing Center" and inscribed with the following:
"Cast me not off in the time of old age; forsake me not when my strength faileth." Psalm 71:9
Since 1979, Christian Care has added Assisted and Independent living units to their communities and has grown to five campuses throughout Arizona; making them the largest provider of senior housing in Arizona. Additionally, Ziegler Capital Markets Group ranks Christian Care as the eighth fastest growing non-profit senior living organization in the nation since 1990.
A core virtue of Christian Care's organizational culture is based on Servant Leadership. Author Robert K. Greenleaf first coined the phrase Servant Leadership in 1970, stating, “The servant-leader is servant first… It begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve, to serve first”.
Guided by Christian principles and their wide breadth of knowledge, backgrounds and education - our Management Team and Board of Directors oversee the organization’s operations today while also planning for its future.
Today, Christian Care has grown to five campuses throughout Arizona; making it the largest not-for-profit provider of senior housing and services in Arizona, more than 2,200 seniors live in a Christian Care community.

I have been working at Christian Care Companies full-time (More than 3 years)
I have worked at christiancare for almost four years, and have had the opportunity to move up in the company multiple times, with only my attitude and work ethic. It really is possible to grow and be promoted in this company. People are great, and the residents are amazing to work with. Great time off and incentive programs, with opportunities to receive higher education/training. The core of this company and those in management who have been with the company for years are those who align themselves with the company's values, and have their employees at their best interest. If you work hard and have a great attitude in this company oh, you will go far.
Medical benefits are still priced a little high monthly, compared to what front line staff are paid, however, the benefits programs are still great options. Some managers lack management training which causes a lot of confusion, frustration, and eventually turnover in some departments, which is sad, because the company is a great place to work. If all managers were given proper training when they came into the company, as well as, throughout the year, they would be able to lead their staff into success, which is what the company desires for their employees.
Advice to Management
Management training should be implemented to achieve success overall. In order, to retain good managers , and to align them with the companies policies, values , systems , etc they need to be trained in such a way that educates, prepares, and sets them up for success. Currently, that is missing at our campuses, which has resulted in the turnover of great management. The type of training would also help in lowering turn over in management as well as in frontline staff.
I applied online. The process took 5 days. I interviewed at Christian Care Companies (Phoenix, AZ) in January 2020.
I received notification of my application being reviewed within the day, and received an interview with in 2 days of my application being submitted. The interview itself was thorough, and a it showed me the heart of the company.
