I have been working at City of Durham, North Carolina full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Pay and benefits are fairly standard. City does match up to 4% of salary in additional retirement account beyond the state retirement system. Pretty progressive organization overall as compared to other municipal government jobs. City Manager has made important changes over the past 5+ years that have positioned the city for the future

    Cons

Many long time employees resistant to change. Aging workforce collides with millennials who don't stick around long. Major overhaul of technology systems needed. IT department is the least innovative imaginable.

    Advice to Management

Keep city manager around as long as possible
