Classy – Why Work For Us?

Here at Classy, our customers are the center of our universe—the reason we come to work each morning. Every employee, in their own way, is motivated to help create and sell a best in class SaaS platform that will enable our nonprofit partners to raise money and use those funds to solve the world’s greatest social problems. We stand in awe of the work each organization accomplishes and see ourselves as a vehicle to enable that work. We’re on a mission to mobilize and empower the world for good, and we’d love for you to be a part of it.

Classy’s co-founders started as fundraisers themselves, looking for a way to be involved in their San Diego community, raise money for local charities, and bring people together. From that standpoint Classy was born, and we will always resonate strongly with our roots. Through their own struggles with fundraising, the founding team discovered a need in the nonprofit space for an effective transition from offline to online fundraising, driving Classy to refocus as a tech company and launch the first version of the software in 2011.

Today, Classy is a staff of 190 people and serves more than 2,500 nonprofit organizations and social enterprises including Oxfam America, World Food Programme, and Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Through a combination of online fundraising and community engagement tools, our platform helps organizations create a better giving experience for their supporters, so they can spend their time tackling humanity’s largest challenges.

Our brilliant tech team is growing every month. We hire the best of the best when it comes to experience and team fit. The recruiting team partners closely with our CTO to find visionary candidates who will be committed to constantly improving the product while continuing to learn and grow as individuals. We work in an agile environment in three-week sprints, and the dev team gathers regularly for weekly bug reviews, sprint retrospectives, and monthly brown bag lunches. We highly value teamwork, collaboration, and innovation to build, design, and test the best product on the market.

Technology Teams at Classy:

  1. Engagement Team: This team makes it possible for our nonprofit partners to empower and encourage their donor base when it comes to fundraising. They build all the tools needed to be successful, such as reporting and analytics, email capabilities, and donor relationship management.
  2. Payments Team: Our Payments team is small but mighty. They handle all of the security and financial transactions processed through the Classy platform.
  3. Fundraising Suite Team: The FRS team is our front-end shop here at Classy. They are responsible for creating the front-end app layer, and tools that make a killer custom user experience. They build in a MEAN app stack.
  4. API Team: These are our back-end folks. They are focused on building and maintaining the API, which is the foundation on which the entire Classy platform is built. Fun fact: the API was recently completely overhauled to be more useful to our customers to use in creative ways. This team uses PHP/Laravel microservices, and MySQL and MongoDB as databases.
  5. Integrations Team: These folks lead the charge on building custom integrations between the Classy platform and third party applications like Salesforce, MailChimp, and many other services. They help keep us agile, useful, and customer-focused.
  6. QA team: How would we build great software unless we had amazing test engineers? Our QA team is responsible for building test automation frameworks to ensure everything we roll out to customers works the way it’s supposed to.
  7. Progress Team: This team of data scientists and developers leads the effort to quantify and articulate social progress using data from our customers. The Progress platform is currently in beta testing and is separate from the Classy platform. We are striving to grow this project over time to help nonprofits and social enterprises measure and communicate their impact, and to provide a tool to the funders and investors of such organizations.
  8. DevOps - Our DevOps engineers work closely with the development and QA teams, playing the vital support role of making our dev systems more automated, productive, and easier to build on.
  9. Design Team: Every single aspect of the Classy product and brand has been influenced by the magical minds of the design team. This team of creatives is divided into two subteams: product designers, who dream up the look, feel, and functionality of the Classy user experience; and visual designers, who touch each piece of sales, marketing, recruiting, and customer success collateral. No small task.

Our tech stack:

  • MEAN app stack (MongoDB, Express, AngularJS, Node.js) + PHP/Laravel microservices
  • Open source platforms (Ubuntu, Nginx, MySQL, MongoDB) running on AWS
  • Design team uses Adobe Creative Suite, Sketch, Balsamiq, Zepelin, InVision

With the expectation that every college grad will lead major projects in their first year of employment, you can rest assured you’ll have a big impact and see your work add real value to the Classy product. Are you competitive, enthusiastic, driven, and love the thrill of the hunt? If so our sales team might be the next career move for you. Our sales team takes “energetic” to a whole new level. They work hard but and never forget to stop to have fun and celebrate their success. The Classy sales culture is results driven, and with a variety of positions and levels, there is a ton of opportunity for growth.

Sales Teams at Classy:

Sales Development Team: Our Sales Development team is the tenacious front line, and the beginning of the sales process. They are unstoppable in bringing new business opportunities to Classy through online research, prospecting leads, and cold outreach.

Account Executive Team: Our team of Account Executives is diverse in experience and big in heart. Above all, they are numbers-driven. They are responsible for full lifecycle sales, from prospecting to closing the deal, all via phone and email.

Sales Management Team: Our Sales Managers are our biggest cheerleaders, roadblock destroyers, and coaches in the sales organization, each responsible for leading a team of sales reps to reach beyond their quota. They run a tight ship, but know how to have a blast while doing it.

Sales Operations Team: Operations for a growing startup is no small task. This team helps train great salespeople, forecast trends, and calculate all commission and incentive pay like wizards. They also architect our entire customer experience and optimize our sales and marketing platforms and tools, ensuring everyone is data informed and can do their jobs more efficiently.

Training and Development:

At Classy we believe you should never stop learning, so thorough training is provided, both at the start of employment and throughout the year. Each sales rep receives a two-week intensive, classroom-style training by our Sales Training Team before they get to work on the phones. Our Trainors also work with existing reps to help the team hone their craft and learn new skills.

Additionally, we have Sales Enablement and Product Marketing teams dedicated to providing the data and tools to sell our product accurately and well.

Note: We have more teams outside of technical and sales! Please visit for a full list of current openings.

Our culture was born out of the idea that one should give back while having fun. Classy’s co-founders started the company as fundraisers, hosting events throughout San Diego to engage the local community in philanthropy. Ten years later, we still resonate with these roots.

To that end, Classy is a lifestyle. It is a company full of talented, enthusiastic people who enjoy coming to work. We are a group of individuals who come together each day to form a family.

Nestled in the East Village of downtown San Diego, Classy is a place where office dogs are welcome, shoes are not required, and the coffee never runs dry. Ideas are heard and valued; hard work and teamwork meet to disrupt the status quo.

We believe in getting the job done while keeping sane hours, and in always being true to ourselves.

Classy defines its culture by our core values. This set of values is much more than principles listed in an employee handbook, but ideals we expect each Classy team member to exhibit, both in and outside of work hours.

Stand for Something

Create Meaningful Value

Lead by Example

Always Be Learning

Dream Big, Execute Smart

Adapt & Overcome

I have been working at Classy full-time (More than a year)

I've worked at large, well-known tech companies, and came to Classy in search of a smaller, mission-driven company that doesn't make me feel like a cog-in-the-wheel or "just a number", and after starting at Classy 2 years ago, I can honestly say I've never looked back.

    Some notable pros:

-Our mission: who doesn't want to work for a company whose product helps nonprofits?! The people who work here truly believe in our product and it's ability to help nonprofits further their mission.
-Our clients: the organizations we work with are incredible, to say the least. We get to work with and serve passionate people who dedicate their lives to bettering the world, and we get the privilege of hearing their stories all day long. We even have clients come in to do presentations so we can learn about/see their impact firsthand.
-The employees: The recruiting team/hiring managers do a great job of sifting out people who just want to work for a "cool tech company". The people are high-energy, passionate, excited, and hardworking, and truly care about our cause. Monday mornings aren't bad here, seriously.
-Feeling valued: Bottom line - if you perform, you'll get recognized and leadership WANTS to promote you. It actually bugs me to see the reviews that say there's no room for promotion, as this is just simply untrue! There is a ton of movement within the company for people who make a name for themselves through their work, and I'm confident that even more opportunites for growth will present themselves are we expand further. Don't let reviews from un-motivated, apathetic ex-employees sway you from this fact.
-Environent: Let's be real, what's better than having a casual, open working environment?! We can bring pets into work, can wear whatever we please, and aren't stuck in stuffy cubicles.
-Downtown location: Right next to Petco Park! Beautiful views of Coronado, parking is paid for, we have a gym in the building..can't get better

-No 401k match/would love more company $$ devoted to employee health insurance but understandable given where we are at as a company.
-Silicon Valley style catered lunches would be nice..(see how spoiled we are that this is a con?!)

    Advice to Management

Continue to give opportunities to hardworking current employees - you will keep people forever!
