Here at Classy, our customers are the center of our universe—the reason we come to work each morning. Every employee, in their own way, is motivated to help create and sell a best in class SaaS platform that will enable our nonprofit partners to raise money and use those funds to solve the world’s greatest social problems. We stand in awe of the work each organization accomplishes and see ourselves as a vehicle to enable that work. We’re on a mission to mobilize and empower the world for good, and we’d love for you to be a part of it.

Classy’s co-founders started as fundraisers themselves, looking for a way to be involved in their San Diego community, raise money for local charities, and bring people together. From that standpoint Classy was born, and we will always resonate strongly with our roots. Through their own struggles with fundraising, the founding team discovered a need in the nonprofit space for an effective transition from offline to online fundraising, driving Classy to refocus as a tech company and launch the first version of the software in 2011.

Today, Classy is a staff of 190 people and serves more than 2,500 nonprofit organizations and social enterprises including Oxfam America, World Food Programme, and Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Through a combination of online fundraising and community engagement tools, our platform helps organizations create a better giving experience for their supporters, so they can spend their time tackling humanity’s largest challenges.


Our brilliant tech team is growing every month. We hire the best of the best when it comes to experience and team fit. The recruiting team partners closely with our CTO to find visionary candidates who will be committed to constantly improving the product while continuing to learn and grow as individuals. We work in an agile environment in three-week sprints, and the dev team gathers regularly for weekly bug reviews, sprint retrospectives, and monthly brown bag lunches. We highly value teamwork, collaboration, and innovation to build, design, and test the best product on the market.

Technology Teams at Classy:

  1. Engagement Team: This team makes it possible for our nonprofit partners to empower and encourage their donor base when it comes to fundraising. They build all the tools needed to be successful, such as reporting and analytics, email capabilities, and donor relationship management.
  2. Payments Team: Our Payments team is small but mighty. They handle all of the security and financial transactions processed through the Classy platform.
  3. Fundraising Suite Team: The FRS team is our front-end shop here at Classy. They are responsible for creating the front-end app layer, and tools that make a killer custom user experience. They build in a MEAN app stack.
  4. API Team: These are our back-end folks. They are focused on building and maintaining the API, which is the foundation on which the entire Classy platform is built. Fun fact: the API was recently completely overhauled to be more useful to our customers to use in creative ways. This team uses PHP/Laravel microservices, and MySQL and MongoDB as databases.
  5. Integrations Team: These folks lead the charge on building custom integrations between the Classy platform and third party applications like Salesforce, MailChimp, and many other services. They help keep us agile, useful, and customer-focused.
  6. QA team: How would we build great software unless we had amazing test engineers? Our QA team is responsible for building test automation frameworks to ensure everything we roll out to customers works the way it’s supposed to.
  7. Progress Team: This team of data scientists and developers leads the effort to quantify and articulate social progress using data from our customers. The Progress platform is currently in beta testing and is separate from the Classy platform. We are striving to grow this project over time to help nonprofits and social enterprises measure and communicate their impact, and to provide a tool to the funders and investors of such organizations.
  8. DevOps - Our DevOps engineers work closely with the development and QA teams, playing the vital support role of making our dev systems more automated, productive, and easier to build on.
  9. Design Team: Every single aspect of the Classy product and brand has been influenced by the magical minds of the design team. This team of creatives is divided into two subteams: product designers, who dream up the look, feel, and functionality of the Classy user experience; and visual designers, who touch each piece of sales, marketing, recruiting, and customer success collateral. No small task.


Our tech stack:

  • MEAN app stack (MongoDB, Express, AngularJS, Node.js) + PHP/Laravel microservices
  • Open source platforms (Ubuntu, Nginx, MySQL, MongoDB) running on AWS
  • Design team uses Adobe Creative Suite, Sketch, Balsamiq, Zepelin, InVision


Internships & New College Grads:

Classy is always on the prowl for new talent. We recruit each year from top computer science schools and look for candidates who have kicked butt academically and have top-notch web development internships under their belt.

They work hard but and never forget to stop to have fun and celebrate their success. The Classy sales culture is results driven, and with a variety of positions and levels, there is a ton of opportunity for growth.


Sales Teams at Classy:

Sales Development Team: Our Sales Development team is the tenacious front line, and the beginning of the sales process. They are unstoppable in bringing new business opportunities to Classy through online research, prospecting leads, and cold outreach.  

Account Executive Team: Our team of Account Executives is diverse in experience and big in heart. Above all, they are numbers-driven. They are responsible for full lifecycle sales, from prospecting to closing the deal, all via phone and email.

Sales Management Team: Our Sales Managers are our biggest cheerleaders, roadblock destroyers, and coaches in the sales organization, each responsible for leading a team of sales reps to reach beyond their quota. They run a tight ship, but know how to have a blast while doing it.

Sales Operations Team: Operations for a growing startup is no small task. This team helps train great salespeople, forecast trends, and calculate all commission and incentive pay like wizards. They also architect our entire customer experience and optimize our sales and marketing platforms and tools, ensuring everyone is data informed and can do their jobs more efficiently.

Training and Development:

At Classy we believe you should never stop learning, so thorough training is provided, both at the start of employment and throughout the year. Each sales rep receives a two-week intensive, classroom-style training by our Sales Training Team before they get to work on the phones. Our Trainors also work with existing reps to help the team hone their craft and learn new skills.

Additionally, we have Sales Enablement and Product Marketing teams dedicated to providing the data and tools to sell our product accurately and well.

    Pros

    The top two reasons I come to work are the people and the opportunity. The mission we are on as a company is extremely meaningful. The work is not always easy but it's easy to find both professional and personal motivation to grow through the changes here. The market is wide open, the product top of the line and Classy will always find a way to recognize/support hard work.

    Cons

    If you are not good with change, this is not the place for you. The only constant is change and from what I've seen its a good thing. Leadership takes feedback very seriously and is always looking to improve. It is very much a fast-paced startup environment. To thrive at Classy you need to be proactive and committed to always develop your skill set.

    Advice to Management

    Continue growing the training program as I've seen a lot of positive results from that department. Keep listening to the sales reps on the floor to learn more about what they are doing right. Continue celebrating wins and giving individualized praise and encouragement. As long as career path opportunities keep presenting themselves, I'll remain confident in being part of the incredible Classy family!

    I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Classy (San Diego, CA) in February 2016.

    Interview

    I found Classy online and fell in love. I applied online, followed up with an email highlighting the top 3 data-driven reasons why I was qualified for the role, and heard back pretty quickly.

    I had an initial phone interview for about 30-40 minutes, followed by 2 rounds of onsites. My first onsite was with just the People team, and the second was with a few managers throughout the company.
