Clayton & McKervey is a public accounting firm headquartered in metro Detroit specializing in international tax, assurance and accounting services. We’re proud of our Michigan roots, but we consider the entire world our workplace. Our clients are middle-market companies competing in the global marketplace. Our firm was founded in 1953 by Don Schmaltz and was called Schmaltz & Company for years. As the world changed, so did we. In 1998, we became Clayton & McKervey and redirected our focus to working with companies competing in the global marketplace. From 1998 through 2012, Don Clayton expanded our visibility in the accounting industry as well as the business community at large. Don continues to serve as chairman today, in retirement.
Kevin McKervey and the team of nine shareholders focused on building the firm’s international practice, which expanded our reach and our size. Kevin sadly passed in 2016 and today, Clayton & McKervey is led by Rob Dutkiewicz, who has been an instrumental part of the organization’s evolution for more than 25 years. Prior to becoming president Rob led Clayton & McKervey’s Small and Mid-sized Entities department, the largest division within the firm. He is heavily involved in the economic development community and with many organizations supporting the firm’s international clientele.
We’re headquartered in Southfield, Michigan, just outside of Detroit. Throughout our history, we’ve helped international companies establish a subsidiary or presence in the United States, and U.S. companies expand their businesses abroad.
The Clayton & McKervey brand has always been about “doing more.” The “&” in our company name symbolizes our desire to bring something extra, unexpected and invaluable to the table. It means you’ll always get something more. We don’t consider our service approach as going the extra mile. Here, at Clayton & McKervey, it’s expected and routine.

Each year, we offer winter and summer internship opportunities within our tax, assurance and small- and mid-sized entities (SME) departments. As an intern, you’ll get the training and earn the responsibilities of a first-year accountant. Our week-long, group orientation and software training program will prepare you well. You'll also be partnered with a peer-level "buddy" who, along with your team, will help you successfully transition into C&M.
Reach Beyond Program
Clayton & McKervey's Reach Beyond Summer program is an opportunity to explore public accounting career opportunities at a dynamic international firm with an entrepreneurial company culture. During this program, you’ll discover what it means to become a successful CPA. You'll learn about our career opportunities and recruiting process, interact with experienced accountants and shareholders working in a variety of service lines, visit client sites and experience our core values at work. I have been working at Clayton & McKervey as an intern (Less than a year)
Great culture, you really get the feeling that people care and everyone is there to help you and make sure you are progressing. You are also able to see many areas of the public accounting profession in one internship such as audit, tax, consulting. This can be helpful if you aren't sure which area you like.
During busy season, you work 6 days a week. But this is compensated for if you're an hourly employee and this is pretty consistent across all public accounting firms during busy season. They also feed you a lot which is nice.
I applied through college or university. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Clayton & McKervey in October 2017.
Applied online via ZipRecruiter, which is where they post all of their jobs. Recruiter came to campus and did interviews. Interviewer was very friendly and seemed to really be interested if candidates would be a good "fit" for the firm, which makes sense because in a working environment that totals around 70 people, you don't want any people who don't fit the culture.
