Clayton & McKervey, P.C. is a certified public accounting firm that provides accounting, tax, and business advisory services for growth-driven, privately held companies competing in the global marketplace.

Mission: Clayton & McKervey is the firm where internationally minded businesses & talented professionals maximize their potential.

Clayton & McKervey – Why Work For Us?

Clayton & McKervey is a public accounting firm headquartered in metro Detroit specializing in international tax, assurance and accounting services. We’re proud of our Michigan roots, but we consider the entire world our workplace. Our clients are middle-market companies competing in the global marketplace. They’re headquartered here in the U.S. and around the globe. At Clayton & McKervey, we think and act like entrepreneurs because our clients are entrepreneurs.

Our firm was founded in 1953 by Don Schmaltz and was called Schmaltz & Company for years. As the world changed, so did we. In 1998, we became Clayton & McKervey and redirected our focus to working with companies competing in the global marketplace. From 1998 through 2012, Don Clayton expanded our visibility in the accounting industry as well as the business community at large. Don continues to serve as chairman today, in retirement.

Kevin McKervey and the team of nine shareholders focused on building the firm’s international practice, which expanded our reach and our size. Kevin sadly passed in 2016 and today, Clayton & McKervey is led by Rob Dutkiewicz, who has been an instrumental part of the organization’s evolution for more than 25 years. Prior to becoming president Rob led Clayton & McKervey’s Small and Mid-sized Entities department, the largest division within the firm. He is heavily involved in the economic development community and with many organizations supporting the firm’s international clientele.

We’re headquartered in Southfield, Michigan, just outside of Detroit. Throughout our history, we’ve helped international companies establish a subsidiary or presence in the United States, and U.S. companies expand their businesses abroad.

The Clayton & McKervey brand has always been about “doing more.” The “&” in our company name symbolizes our desire to bring something extra, unexpected and invaluable to the table. It means you’ll always get something more. We don’t consider our service approach as going the extra mile. Here, at Clayton & McKervey, it’s expected and routine.

Each member of our staff abides by these core values:

Passion to help others succeed We genuinely want to help those who help themselves.
Can-do attitude We focus on the end result, not the roadblocks.
Fun We laugh and enjoy the moment.
Performance We do what it takes and then some.

confidence & trust
As humans, we sometimes rationalize our reasons for what makes a great accounting firm. We use unemotional facts like the size of clients and number of employees to determine our decision. But oftentimes, the real, underlying reasons for our career decisions are less definable. It typically comes down to comfort, confidence and trust. We could give you a bunch of great reasons why C&M is a great place to work. But the biggest reason is the opportunities presented to each and every team member to see the world differently here, and to join us in exceeding the expectations not only of our clients but ourselves. Exceeding expectations is what doing great business is all about.
worldly & willing
Yes, we have international expertise. We help people all over the globe get things done. Through our global affiliations, our employees gain access to the right people at the right stages in their career, and make connections that often prove invaluable for advancement. But being worldly is more than just being “international.” It’s having plenty of practical experience doing business successfully throughout the world. Our willingness, can-do attitude and passion for helping our clients succeed are the core values that define our firm’s culture.

skilled & accessible
Every competent accounting firm has skilled people. But in the long run, what good is all that talent without a strong commitment to developing the firm’s next generation? We’re not so big that our very best people are running our business from the back office. They’re on the front lines, connecting with clients, establishing themselves in the business community and working alongside new staff members – sharing their knowledge, guiding and mentoring. At Clayton & McKervey, experience and responsibility are gained quickly and, if you’re up for the challenge, career development can proceed at a brisk pace.

industrious & fun
The world is full of industrious people who work long hours. But at Clayton & McKervey, we believe people are the sum of their existence. Having fun doing what we do, and sharing the fun with our clients as we work to grow their businesses, is vitally important to us. We take our work very seriously, but we don’t take ourselves too seriously. We embrace the intrinsic value of a well-rounded perspective… a perspective that helps us give our clients our very best effort and the very best results day in and day out.

benefits & perks
At Clayton & McKervey, we’re all about job satisfaction … providing all of our team members with the benefits and perks to maximize productivity. Including (but not limited to) a competitive compensation and benefits package, plenty of office supplies, including lots of paper clips and Post-it® note pads, and all the M&Ms you could ever want — plain, peanut and even pretzel. As our French clients say, bon appétit.

confident & capable
C&M University is designed to develop strong, confident, capable team members and prepare them to enjoy long, rewarding careers. Through the program, they learn many important technical, business development, leadership and interpersonal skills. Our team approach to the development and training of new team members is designed to address the “whole” professional. This also helps our clients, who benefit from the ideas and insights imparted by every professional on their Clayton & McKervey team.

There are countless reasons to work at Clayton & McKervey and our team is growing. Whether you’re an accounting student, new CPA or an established professional ready to take your accounting career up a notch, we’re interested in talking to you. Here are a few ways to join our firm.

You'll also be partnered with a peer-level "buddy" who, along with your team, will help you successfully transition into C&M.

Reach Beyond Program
Clayton & McKervey's Reach Beyond Summer program is an opportunity to explore public accounting career opportunities at a dynamic international firm with an entrepreneurial company culture. During this program, you’ll discover what it means to become a successful CPA. I have been working at Clayton & McKervey as an intern (Less than a year)

Great culture, you really get the feeling that people care and everyone is there to help you and make sure you are progressing. You are also able to see many areas of the public accounting profession in one internship such as audit, tax, consulting. This can be helpful if you aren't sure which area you like.

During busy season, you work 6 days a week. But this is compensated for if you're an hourly employee and this is pretty consistent across all public accounting firms during busy season. They also feed you a lot which is nice.

I applied through college or university. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Clayton & McKervey in October 2017.

Applied online via ZipRecruiter, which is where they post all of their jobs. Recruiter came to campus and did interviews. Interviewer was very friendly and seemed to really be interested if candidates would be a good "fit" for the firm, which makes sense because in a working environment that totals around 70 people, you don't want any people who don't fit the culture.
