    Pros

Common Impact allows a mission-driven professional to have a significant cross-sector impact. Every decision made at the organization is informed first and foremost by the idea of service as a force for social justice. Programs are highly effective at building nonprofit capacity and providing corporate volunteers with an opportunity to develop their skills and engage with their communities. For an individual seeking to enact systemic community change, the organization offers a unique opportunity to work at the nexus of business and nonprofit.

Due to Common Impact's small size and flat organizational structure, there are myriad opportunities to take on leadership roles that may not be accessible to younger professionals in other organizations. Employees are encouraged to craft their own career path based on their unique interests and aptitudes, providing a rare opportunity to gain exposure to different areas of the organization's client-facing and internal operations.

The staff and leadership at Common Impact are driven and brilliant. Significant effort is made to foster a high-achieving, yet flexible and positive work culture.

    Cons

Common Impact is a fast-paced organization that requires staff to be proactive, efficient and innovative. Self-starters with a learning mindset will thrive. Those who struggle with time management and ambiguity may have a difficult time excelling at the organization.

    Application

I applied online. The process took 6 weeks. I interviewed at Common Impact (New York, NY) in July 2017.

    Interview

I applied via Indeed in late-June 2017. I heard back from Common Impact in early-July, and was quickly scheduled for a first round interview, which took place over video conference with two consultants. Within a week, I was called back for an in-person interview. In advance of this interview, I was asked to complete a straightforward scenario assignment to test my organizational skills. My recruitment contact was communicative and mapped out exactly what to expect for the structure of the interview, which included a traditional interview with my prospective manager, introductions and social time with the full New York team, and a presentation of my scenario assignment. I heard back from Common Impact with an offer in August.
