Company Updates

  • When Hawaii committed to becoming the first U.S. state to run entirely on clean energy, organizations like local nonprofit Blue Planet Foundation stepped in to unite folks around the earth-friendly plan. As part of the effort, Blue Planet launched #weare100, a campaign highlighting 100 innovative individuals, businesses, and community organizations that have skin and soul in this fight. The team at Blue Planet is hoping that inspiring stories like this one they produced on Kona Brewing Co. will inspire others to be part of the journey!

Craft Brew Alliance – Why Work With Us?

HOW WE STARTED

Craft Brew Alliance was formed in 2008 with the merger of Widmer Brothers Brewing and Redhook Ale Brewery, two pioneering Pacific Northwest craft brewers that decided to combine resources and bring their great-tasting craft beers to more beer lovers. Kona Brewing Company, Hawaii’s longest-running and favorite craft brewing company, joined the alliance in 2010, making CBA the first beer company to be comprised of three legendary craft breweries that were instrumental in sparking the American craft beer movement.

WHO WE ARE TODAY

Today, Craft Brew Alliance is among the top seven largest craft beer companies, with brewing locations and teams across the United States. We remain steadfastly devoted to nurturing distinctive craft beers and brands that are rooted in real stories and local heritage, set the benchmark for quality and great taste, and share our commitment to innovation, community, and sustainability.

WHO OUR EMPLOYEES ARE

Highly engaged, accountable, forward thinking leaders that share the same passion for and dedication to quality, value and service as envisioned by our Company founders.

C.R.A.F.T VALUES

We have five shared values that guide our actions and influence the decisions we make as we pursue our vision and goals. These values reflect a culture that prioritizes accountability and collaboration over status and competition. They remind each 4 of us to behave in a way that honors our legacy while inspiring us to continue innovating and building the future of craft beer. While some may question the definition of “craft,” we know what it is. It’s more than size, more than ingredients, and more than a label – it’s a testament to our passion for beer and a commitment to remain true – to our heritage, to our consumers, and to our craft. We are Craft Brew, and these are our core values:

Creativity - Great companies evolve and adapt. Rather than fear change, they embrace and prepare for it. At CBA, we take risks and find innovative ways to achieve our objectives because every day is an opportunity to learn and try something new. In this way, we stay agile, we inspire those around us, and we shape our future.

Respect - As one of the largest craft brewers in the country, we are conscientious about our impact – on our communities, our people and our environment. By fostering a culture of integrity and respect, we develop leaders who set positive examples, encourage diversity, and enable the vast potential of everyone around us.

Accountability - We call it like it is. We take responsibility for our actions and results, and we hold each other accountable to achieve the highest standards in quality and safety, because our consumers, partners and employees deserve the best. Without that commitment, we’ve lost the spirit of who we are.

Fun - We love what we do and it shows in the quality of our product and the passion of our teams. We work hard at making CBA the great company it is today, and we also recognize the importance of enjoying the journey as much as the outcome.

Teamwork – CBA’s foundation is built on family and teamwork, and we strive to continue that legacy. We work to create an environment that is inclusive, inspires collaboration and fosters strong relationships. We look out for one another, we work towards common goals, and we celebrate our successes – often over a few of our great beers!

LOOKING FOR GREAT CAREER IN BEER? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE!

Thanks for your interest in Craft Brew Alliance! We are deeply committed to our C.R.A.F.T. values: Creativity, Respect, Accountability, Fun & Teamwork. Among the values, we see Accountability as central to who we are and what we believe in. Part of being accountable is committing to open, candid communications, which is why we like to share the key tenets of our culture and our work philosophy in advance so that you can make the right decision as to whether CBA is an environment in which you would thrive.

As a company, we are focused on developing individual accountability on an ongoing basis, with core principles introduced during onboarding and continuing through team learning events and individual coaching sessions.

Accountability at CBA is about committing to the company’s strategy, being resilient when faced with obstacles, owning your part in progress and outcomes, and continually learning for future success. We believe it’s our collective responsibility– our shared accountability – to drive CBA to success and create a great work experience for all.

If you’re curious what that looks or sounds like, this might help:

We do…

We don’t…

Ask questions and state our point-of-view up front

Hold meetings after the meeting to complain about what was said or not said

Talk openly and directly with our colleagues about challenges

Disrespect our colleagues by talking about them to others

Give others – teammates, leadership, other departments – the benefit of the doubt when things don’t go as planned

Make judgments about the misgivings of others

Own and take charge of our career path at CBA – making our interests known and developing skillsets for desired advancements

Expect advancement opportunities based on tenure alone

Embrace changes in technology, strategy, or process in order to help CBA advance and remain competitive

Resist change that at first, we don’t like or understand simply because it’s out of our comfort zone

Work toward inclusion by staying open and curious – asking questions to learn more about others and their points-of-view

Assume that our perspective or approach is the same or the best for everyone

Our culture requires self-awareness and self-reflection – each requiring courage, maturity and humility. We hope this sounds refreshing to you! It’s a very rewarding experience!

Health Benefits and Overall Wellness

Here at CBA, we are proud of our commitment to ensuring our benefits and wellness programs are among the best in the industry. We regularly benchmark our benefit levels and coverages to stay competitive with other plans in our state, region, and industry - and it rocks! CBA has consistently met or exceeded benchmarks for benefit attributes (copay, deductible, coinsurance, maximums), and the cost of the plan to employees on a monthly basis remains consistently below benchmarks.

Our benefits team at CBA reviews all suggestions from our advisors and CBA employees and then provides recommendations to the Executive Leadership Team annually, as to what we think will best serve the company. We also put a lot of energy behind our wellness initiatives, offering education, tools and resources for employees to be their own best in and out of the workplace. We use a fun, mobile platform for employees to engage in wellness activities including physical, mental, financial health, and more. The platform allows employees to engage with each other or even broaden their social reach outside the Company, engage in badge activities and work toward incentives. And, we have received external validation that our benefits and wellness programming does, in fact rock! We have been named one of the Healthiest Employers in Oregon since 2014 and nationally recognized as a Top 100 Healthiest Employer since 2015!

Paid Parental Leave

As part of our “Be Your Own Best” approach to supporting the “whole employee”, we are pleased to offer paid parental leave to enable full-time employees to care for and bond with a newborn or a newly adopted or newly placed child. This provides the flexibility employees need to manage their transition back to work in a positive way. Each individual and family have unique needs. The flexibility this policy provides enables employees to find the right balance for bonding and career.

401(k) Plan

Regular full-time and part-time employees who are at least 18 years of age are eligible to participate in CBA’s 401(k) plan as of the first payroll following their hire date. The company provides matching contributions after an employee has reached 90 days of employment.

Beer Related Privileges (Must be 21 or older)

Let’s face it, working at a beer company has some pretty unique benefits. Who ever heard of a paper clip company giving its employees free beer on a regular basis, right? Here at CBA, we like to call our special benefits Beer Related Privileges, or BRPs for short. Our BRPs ensure we take time to celebrate and share the great beers we make, as well as get plenty of opportunities to spend time and create great memories with our families and friends. Here’s an overview of some of CBA’s most popular BRPs:

  • Employee Discounts – Employees are treated to a 20-40% discount in our restaurants and retail stores.
  • Our Beer – If you’re working in or visiting one of our locations, you may have the opportunity to pick up a case, growler, or more, of freshly brewed beer. This is our way of gathering market research and to encourage employees to share our beers with friends, neighbors and family.

Our Sustainability Commitment

As one of the largest craft brewers in the country, we are conscientious about our impact – on our communities, our people and our environment.

Craft Brew Alliance began tracking progress towards annual sustainability goals five years ago in the hopes that our efforts to create a positive environmental impact everywhere we do business will inspire others. We invest in sustainability innovation – whether we’re engaging in the fight against climate change or partnering with leaders to make our new Hawaii brewery one of the most sustainable out there. We set aggressive targets as part of our World Class Craft commitment, setting the bar in sustainability. Our focus includes reducing our carbon emissions intensity and water usage, working towards zero waste, and engaging employees and communities where we live, work and play.

Our employees are at the center of our award-winning sustainability programs, and we ask, at a minimum, for them to:

REDUCE use of materials, whether it is going digital during meetings or drinking tap water instead of bottled. Use durable plates, glasses and utensils to eliminate disposables. When printing, use duplex to print on both sides of the paper.

RECYCLE all paper, cardboard, metal, glass and compost food scraps and coffee grounds.

TURN IT OFF – lights, computers (every night), the thermostat when areas are not occupied, and equipment when it is not in use.

TAKE GREEN TRANSPORTATION by walking, biking, carpooling and using public transportation. We have incentives and discounts available.

SMART PURCHASING prioritizes goods that are made locally/regionally, made of recycled-content inputs, free of hazardous chemicals, and certified by labels such as EnergySTAR, EPA Green Seal, or others.

VOLUNTEER for many of our employee opportunities and earn back PTO with our Volunteers in Action incentive. Attend our non-profit happy hours to get involved in our community causes.

GO PAPERLESS FOR PAYROLL by signing up in ADP.

SUSTAINABILITY COMMITTEE members participate from all across the company.

TELL THE STORY and be proud of CBA’s sustainable practices and don’t miss the opportunity through marketing and sales to spread the word.

    Application

I applied online. The process took 2+ months. I interviewed at Craft Brew Alliance (Portland, OR) in April 2019.

    Interview

Met with two people in the newly formed pH Experiment. The interview had some guidelines however we mostly spent the time talking about past projects I have done and answer a few pointed questions to find out receptivity around design thinking, collaboration, etc. The group was nice and clearly had a united front of working together, were competitive and looking outside the box to grow methodology.
