I have been working at Crafty full-time (More than a year)

I have had a good amount of jobs in my life and I was beginning to feel like the only person who cared about my professional development was me. Managers had pretended to care before because it's a good look for them but really, it never was prioritized. I felt like, since I figured out what I wanted to do a little later than usual, I sort of just fell into operational roles. That's where I started with Crafty and then about 6 months in, they recognized that I had other skills and asked me if I'd like to change positions. I had asked about this in other work places but felt like I was screaming into the ether with no support so it was a shock when they came to me. The 4 cofounders showed instantly that they cared about my career trajectory and knew that I had other things to bring to the table that I previously hadn't been able to explore. Cut to now, nearly 3 years later and I have a completely different role, doing things that I absolutely love and am learning new things every single day. I have been embraced with such kindness and compassion at this place in a way I have never experienced. The people that make up this place are all working toward a similar goal and the people who do well here all have similar qualities.

    1. You work hard, every single day. You produce an immense amount of work and you do it as well as you possible can.
    2. You have empathy for every person you work with and jump in to help them wherever you can. You let your coworkers know you appreciate them and they let you know the same. We're in this together, always.
    3. You know egos are garbage and you've destroyed yours. Our goal is common and if you're in it for personal glory, you're gonna feel weird here.

There are of course days that are hard because this is real life but truthfully, when you are part of this larger team, the hard days aren't as bad. You have people to talk things out with and be your true and honest self without worrying "oh i shouldn't have said that, it didn't make me look good."

At other companies I have been at, you really feel like an outsider if you're not a straight, white guy. No one says it, but your options are limited when you only see those kinds of people in higher level roles at a company. Here, that's a non issue. Diversity and inclusion is not only important, it's prioritized. I don't think it can be expressed how important that is for anyone who isn't a straight white guy.

I'm sure there's more to say but those are the top of mind pros!

If you want to clock in and clock out and not be really invested in a place, this isn't a good fit for you. No shade to people who prefer that, it's just not how it works here. You need to be ready and willing to work hard with few resources. Expectations are high and if you're not going to give your all, it will become apparent very quickly and you won't do well here.

There are hiccups all the time because we try things sometimes without anticipating every single scenario. Sometimes, you need to clean up a mess you (or someone else) made with the best intentions. This doesn't bother me because I know everyone here makes choices hoping for the best possible outcome but if you lean toward resentful feelings, this may annoy you a lot.

Communication around the larger team isn't great. Sometimes you'll hear about something, like a change in process or someone taking over a different role, way later than you should've. I know people try to be transparent and communicate well but I still think we haven't found the best way to do that all the time.

I also think we haven't found a great way to make part time people and people who work out in the field all the time feel truly like their a part of the larger team. I know it's discussed all the time but I don't think we're quite there.

    People Operations Manager Interview

Anonymous Interview Candidate in San Francisco, CA
    No Offer
    Negative Experience
    Average Interview

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Crafty (San Francisco, CA) in May 2019.

After having an initial phone interview, I had an in-person interview with the Head of People and one of the Company Founders. It felt informal in the sense it was in a crowded coffee shop, which was a bit hard to hear and focus. The questions from the Founder seemed directive and looking for a specific answer instead of learning about how I think. After the interview I sent a thank you note and asked about next steps. I never heard anything back. They ghosted me, which felt pretty unprofessional.
