Cummins – Why Work For Us?

At Cummins, we’re a place big enough to coach and develop a global workforce and create the world’s leading clean, engine technology. We’re also small enough for you to find your fit and personal passion with a team of dependable, innovative thinkers who are developing their careers within a diverse, inclusive, empowering environment. This is how we do business - and we call it Working Right

Cummins Inc. is organized into five distinct but complementary business units:

Cummins Engine Segment manufactures and markets a complete line of diesel and natural gas-powered engines for on-highway and off-highway use. Its markets include heavy-and medium-duty truck, bus, recreational vehicle (RV), light-duty automotive and a number of industrial uses including agricultural, construction, mining marine, oil and gas and military equipment. Cummins Engine Business also provides a full range of new parts and services and remanufactured parts and engines through an extensive distribution network.

Cummins engines range in size from 31 to 3,500 horsepower and from 1.4 liters to 91 liters.

Cummins Power Systems Segment is a global provider of power generation systems, components, and services in standby power, distributed power generation, as well as auxiliary power in mobile applications to meet the needs of a diversified customer base. Cummins Power Generation also provides a full range of services and solutions, including long-term operation and maintenance contracts and turnkey and temporary power solutions.

Cummins Power Generation products include diesel and alternative-fueled electrical generator sets from 2.5 to 2,700 kW, alternators from 0.6 KVA to 30,000 KVA, transfer switches from 40 amps to 3,000 amps, paralleling switchgear and generator set controls.

The ComponentsSegment consists of four businesses with key technologies for delivering integrated solutions: Cummins Filtration, Cummins Turbo Technologies, Cummins Emission Solutions and Cummins Fuel Systems.

  • Cummins Filtration designs, manufactures, and distributes heavy-duty air, fuel, hydraulic and lube filtration, chemicals and exhaust system technology products for diesel and gas-powered equipment.
  • Cummins Turbo Technologies designs and manufactures turbochargers and related products, on a global scale, for diesel engines above 3 liters.
  • Cummins Emission Solutions develops and supplies catalytic exhaust systems and related products to the medium-and heavy-duty commercial diesel engine markets. The exhaust systems include packaging of catalytic exhaust systems, engineered aftertreatment components and system integration services for engine manufacturers.
  • Cummins Fuel Systems designs, develops and manufactures new fuel systems and remanufactures electronic control modules in the United States. In Mexico, it remanufactures Cummins fuel systems and others. This business services engines ranging from 9 to 78 liters.

Cummins Distribution Segment drives a comprehensive global distribution strategy and channel management. Capitalizing on synergies in parts and services, this business helps Cummins by providing outstanding support to our customers, while growing a less cyclical and less capital intensive business.

The business consists of 17 company-owned distributors and 10 joint ventures, covering 90 countries and territories through 233 locations. Through this network, trained personnel sell and distribute Cummins-branded products, related services and broader solutions such as maintenance contracts, engineering services, and customized integrated products.

Cummins Electrified Power Segment, the newest of our business segments, brings together all Cummins’ electrification resources to increase the visibility of and accountability for the company’s investments and performance in this growing marketing. It is positioned to provide fully-electric and hybrid powertrain solutions along with technology leading components and subsystems to serve all our markets as they adopt electrification. Living our values through the inclusion of diverse perspectives gives us our edge in developing the right technology. Our products leverage our advanced technology by doing what is right for our customers and our planet. Our processes keep our peoples’ health and safety as a priority — which is the right thing to do. Our people are empowered to grow their career in the right direction with meaningful work, coaching, development opportunities and making their impact on the world.

This is how we do business. And we call it Working Right.

Working Right is our employees’ shared vision for where we’re going, how we treat others & the culture of respect inside our Company. We’re looking for people who believe in the innovative work we’re doing and can collaborate across cultures to help us build a better tomorrow.  In return, you’ll experience our world-class training & development to help you grow into the career of a lifetime.

Diversity and inclusion have been a part of Cummins' core values for more than 50 years dating back to our CEO, J. Irwin Miller, who led the Company until 1977. Miller believed in the power of listening. He wanted to hear from a wide variety of voices before reaching a decision, believing no single gender, race, or ethnicity had a monopoly on wisdom. But we know that diversity for diversity sake does not drive success; it is inclusion, or how we use diversity, that is key. Inclusion means that employees accept the diversity of their peers and make them feel welcome and safe in the workplace. It is only when we are inclusive that we work most effectively – relying on the differences and strengths of all our employees. We welcome multiple viewpoints and voices, and we embrace the diverse perspectives of all people and honor both with dignity and respect. Cummins has a number of women and minorities among its senior leaders and we continually work toward a gender-balanced workforce.

More than 100 local diversity councils and affinity groups help create the right environment for success at Cummins by promoting and supporting diversity and inclusion.  The groups raise awareness and educate Cummins employees on the importance of diversity, advise senior leaders on diversity-related initiatives and, in some cases, initiate research projects with a diversity component.

Diversity Inc. has named Cummins Inc. to its list of the Top 50 Companies for Diversity every year since 2006. In addition, Cummins has received a perfect score each year since 2005 in the Corporate Equality Index, awarded by the Human Rights Campaign, which is the largest U.S. civil rights organization for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) employees.

Another thing that sets Cummins apart from other companies is diversity training.  All employees are required to complete Spectrum Diversity Training, an all-day session that teaches employees not only how to interact with co-workers who have different backgrounds and ethnicities, but also the Business Case for Diversity. The training uses role playing, group exercises, video and more to show employees that diverse organizations are better able to develop creative solutions to difficult business problems than companies where every employee is alike.

Our Mission: Making people’s lives better by powering a more prosperous world.

Our Mission answers a simple but crucial question: Why does Cummins exist?

It starts with what we do. We have and will always make things that people use. Our products may look quite different in the years to come, but we will always be a maker – a creator. That’s followed by acknowledging people or stakeholders – our customers, employees, shareholders, communities, partners, and suppliers. Powering not only describes what our products do but is a reference to technology we provide. Finally, it all leads to a more prosperous world. While creating financial stability and wealth for our stakeholders is essential to our future, doing so sustainably is equally important. Ultimately, we will only fulfill our mission and make people’s lives better if we create more wealth with less impact on the planet.

Our Vision: Innovating for our customers to power their success.

Our Vision follows our mission. It looks toward the future and what we want to accomplish over time.

It starts with innovating. Innovation is at the heart of everything we do. We innovate for our customers and they are central to our strategy. Powering the future is why we’re in this business. It’s why we are so determined to be dependable, innovative and excellent. Finally, our customer’s success is our success. Our vision gives us an opportunity to connect what we want to accomplish with our customers’ own goals in order to create success for everyone.

Our Values:

Integrity – Doing what you say you will do and doing what is right.

Diversity & Inclusion – Valuing and including our differences in decision-making is our competitive advantage.

Caring – Demonstrating awareness and consideration for the wellbeing of others.

Excellence – Always delivering superior results.

Teamwork – Collaborating across teams, functions, businesses, and borders to deliver the best work.

Potential for Growth

Innovation is critical to our success. We're also innovative in the way we develop our employees. Understanding your talents, current skills, and future goals – and creating a plan to get you there. It's how we ensure that our employees continually grow so we can achieve the success we all dream about.

Like everyone at Cummins, you'll be asked to actively develop and demonstrate leadership. You can take advantage of opportunities for international career growth, training, work-life balance initiatives and more.

As a Cummins employee, we want to help you achieve your full potential and grow as a leader. Here, there are no rigid career tracks—so whether you desire to focus your skills on the management of technical projects and people, or if you want to dedicate yourself to becoming a specialist in a specific area of research, or both—your assignments and career path will match your talents and interests.

The professional development tools and experiences you’ll find at Cummins are the keys to your success. Our leadership training, mentoring circles, rotation programs and HR systems are all in place to build your career. Our culture inspires our employees to be ethical, engaged, innovative and committed to building success in others – which ultimately builds a successful and sustainable company with more opportunities.

Performance Management

In order to help guide your career, we leverage our global Performance Management process to align the success of the company with the work that you do. It also gives you the opportunity to guide your own growth and success through your career.

At the beginning of each year, you'll work with your manager to clearly define your work and development objectives (Planning stage). Throughout the year, you and your manager will have ongoing conversations to help align your work with the objectives of the company and our core values. You will also uncover skills and experiences that you'll need to accomplish your career goals and set goals for individual development. You'll work together to review your progress, and your manager will provide feedback on your work and development (Updating stage).

At the end of the year, you and your manager will again work together to evaluate your performance (Reviewing stage) and how it relates to big-picture Cummins objectives and to your own personal goals. Your manager will also speak with key stakeholders as part of your assessment in order to provide valuable feedback on your strengths and development opportunities.
