HISTORY

Curse.com was started by Hubert Thieblot as a way to organize the numerous add-ons that were available for his favorite game, World of Warcraft. Hubert originally designed the website just for his friends, but quickly learned that the website he started as a hobby was something the entire gaming community could benefit from. In 2006, as demand for the site began to grow and the site’s traffic skyrocketed, Hubert realized he had a viable online business, and Curse, Inc. was born.

As the newly formed company continued to grow, Hubert made the decision to relocate to San Francisco, where by 2009 he had secured 11 million dollars of financing and began to transform the company from a small, singularly focused start-up into a diverse, gaming information giant.

Today, Curse, Inc. reaches over 50 million people every month through its portfolio of web properties, video channels, social media channels, and its desktop application – the Curse Client.

Our Core Values

Our Passion and Purpose is for Gaming

Our company was founded by working together, playing games, and creating long lasting bonds through teamwork and a mutual desire to accomplish our goals. The same mechanics that allow large groups of people to be successful in games are present within our company and every member of the team is expected to share this same passion and drive for excellence. The passion and love we show for our favorite games must shine through in the quality of our work. We are part of the communities we build.

We Are Entrusted by the Community for the Community

We accept the responsibility placed on us by our users and will respect that at all times. We do this by creating high quality and non-invasive communities, tools, and resources designed to enhance the user experience. We will do our very best to steward the community and always act in its best interest.

Past Accomplishments Do Not Guarantee Future Success

We must remain diligent in an ever changing industry. We commit ourselves to always focus on the wants and needs of the community and strive to supply our users with the content they need to be successful. This can only be done through a strong work ethic, an aggressive pursuit of high quality games, and the utilization of the best technology available.

    I worked at Curse.com full-time

    Pros

    - Never been happier to go to 'work' couldn't call it that really. The people are so lovely and supportive, I would be remiss if I didn't sing their praises.
    - The relaxed work culture & tight knit gaming community in the office is the stuff of dreams.
    - If you have the tenacity & the right attitude, this is a company that will reward you (financially & fulfillment wise)
    - There's room for advancement (if you choose) not just in your career path, but if you have an idea worth pursuing and show passion Curse will provide resources.

    Cons

    - Industry moves quickly. The most valuable asset in the company may turn out to be a liability 2 years later. Hard to set a firm course, at time.
    - New directions means new blood, outside talent may have existing employees looking to grow, overlooked. Can be frustrating when you want to build a long term career.

    Advice to Management

I would say there could be better communication across the board. Or empower employees to be able to reach out of their 'bubble' as Curse is a fairly flat org. If you feel your direct manager isn't doing you justice, its hard to navigate those waters.

    Application

I applied online. The process took 2+ months. I interviewed at Curse.com.

    Interview

Initially applied to an online posting but was a better fit for a full time position. I did a couple casual phone/Skype interviews and then was flown to their HQ for another casual round of in-person interviews. I would not necessarily say that my experience was typical of most employees, who went through a more official application process for a specific job whereas I just happened to get my resume on the desk of someone who'd been thinking of creating a position like the one I ended up being offered.

    Interview Questions

    • I was asked to come up with strategies for attracting groups of users from the main competitor.   Answer Question

    Negotiation

I received an offer I felt was very low considering my educational background. However, the position was way too good a fit to pass up, so I bargained their salary offer up enough to make it reasonable, if still a little low.
