There's perks. And then there's these not-so-routine offerings.

There are all sorts of ways to keep employees happy beyond just giving them a paycheck. Many companies subsidize health insurance, chip in for retirement and offer paid leave. But some look for more creative ways to reward employees. What follows is a sample.

CustomInk – Why Work For Us?

Knowledgeable, fun-loving people delivering WOW! experiences — that's what we're all about at CustomInk. We're among friends here, and we're challenged to innovate and take ownership over our work while being creative in our jobs and focusing our attention on making our customers happy. At the end of the day, we're like a family — and that's important.

We love coming to work and it shows through the variety of awards we've won over the years including 100 Best Companies to Work For by Fortune, CEO of the Year by the Washington Business Journal, and Best Medium Workplaces by the Great Place to Work Institute. We've also been acknowledged by many local insitutes as a great place to work, just check out our awards page and see for yourself!

CustomInk cares – about our customers, our team members, our community, and our environment. It's no coincidence that our mascot, Inky, is an octopus. While everyone knows an octopus has eight arms, you might not be aware that every octopus also has three hearts. Think of all the love we can spread!

We are proud of the big hearts and generous spirits of our team members (“Inkers”). Most of our charitable programs first started with an Inker seeing someone in need and deciding, “I’m going to do something to help.” Garnering the support of the company and their fellow team mates along the way, Inkers have initiated countless charitable efforts – from "giving trees" for kids in need to coat drives for the homeless and bake sales for medical research. There's even a CustomInk Movember team that raises money for men's health issues. On any given day, you can find Inkers doing good and giving back to show their support for worthy causes.

It’s a high bar – and an example for the company itself to follow. That’s why CustomInk encourages community service by providing ample paid leave for volunteering, and by making donations to support Inkers’ charitable activities. We do these things, and more, because we’re committed to doing the right thing for our customers, our Inkers and our community – and because it makes us happy.

I have been working at CustomInk full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

CustomInk is a great place to work and have won several awards for this. They've been more transparent and realistic lately, which I really appreciate in terms of where we're at as a company both in terms of vision and economics. It's also clear on what the goals are. The benefits are unparalleled and they run their business as such but with a personal touch. Even if you are or aren't in the right role, they do what they can to develop and help you grow into the next role that you're interested in. I've seen first hand how flexible they are here when you're going through rough times and they do what they can to accommodate. I can't say enough.

    Cons

They give more chances than most companies for folks that have slipped in reliability, ethics, or performance, which can be both a plus and a con.

    Application

I applied online. I interviewed at CustomInk (Reno, NV) in July 2017.

    Interview

This interview was very thorough, but I really enjoyed the process. They first give you a tour of the company building and then you sit down to do a skills test. The skills test is math and navigating their site. After that you go into a room and interview with two current employees. They were extremely nice and the interview wasn't stuffy at all. Then after that you sit with an employee and just shadow them for about 30min. Once that is done you go into your final interview with the manager. He was super friendly and personable. I did get offered the position but ultimately had to turn it down once talking it over more with my family. I would definitely interview again if they had a permanent position available.
