The story begins…

DICK’S Sporting Goods was founded in 1948 when an 18 year-old Dick Stack was working at an Army surplus store in Binghamton, New York. An avid fisherman, Dick was approached by the store owner to come up with a list of products needed to get into the fishing tackle business. After Dick presented his suggestions, the owner told him he was a dumb kid and had no idea what he was doing. Dick was upset and promptly quit. He went to his grandmother’s house where he spent a lot of time as a kid and told her what had happened.

Dick’s grandmother asked how much it would cost to build the store himself. Dick said it would cost $300. His grandmother then went to the cookie jar where she kept her life savings and gave him $300 and told him “do it yourself.” Dick used that money and his relentless work-ethic to open a bait-and-tackle shop in Binghamton. By the late 1970's, he expanded his product line to include much of what you’ll find at DICK’S Sporting Goods today.

…and lives on

Ed Stack, Dick’s son, is the current CEO and Chairman of DICK’S Sporting Goods. He and his siblings bought the store from their father and are responsible for taking two stores and growing the chain. Dick’s family continues to offer the finest quality products at competitive prices, supported by associates with a passion for sports. DICK’S Sporting Goods went public on the New York Stock Exchange on October 15, 2002 under the ticker symbol DKS.

Our Commitment to Health & Wellness
As a leader in the sports and fitness business, we help our customers enjoy the benefits of an active lifestyle. DICK’S Sporting Goods wants to encourage and empower our associates to do the same. That’s why we build partnerships with our associates through communications and programs that provide all the resources and information needed to make informed decisions about their health and well-being.

Our Wellness Initiative is an important component in this education. Through mailings, lunch & learns, guest speakers, and on- and off-site lifestyle programs, we’re not only creating health awareness, we’re helping associates maintain greater control of their out-of-pocket healthcare expenses and creating an improved sense of well-being.

Sports Matter is an initiative to raise awareness and address the growing issue of underfunded youth athletics nationwide. It is the signature program of The DICK'S Sporting Goods Foundation.

Youth sports participation is declining and $3.5 billion was cut from youth sports programs in recent years. It's estimated that 27% of US public high schools will not have ANY sports by 2020.

DICK'S Sporting Goods and the DICK'S Sporting Goods Foundation believe sports truly matter because they make people better.

    No opinion of CEO

I have been working at DICK'S Sporting Goods part-time (Less than a year)

I like most of the people who i work with.
I learn new things every day.
My managers know what they are doing.
I get to engage with people and stay active my entire shift.

Some employees are very unhelpful and unreliable.
Training is a bit lacking and we need to pick it up as we go.
I have a completely random schedule every week with only a few hours on average.

    Advice to Management

Find good employees and give them more hours while doing away with the associates that frequently don't preform or show up to work.
Also allow employees to assist the leads/management more so they aren't worked ragged.

    Associate Producer Interview

Anonymous Interview Candidate in Pittsburgh, PA

    Negative Experience
    Average Interview

I applied online. The process took 3 days. I interviewed at DICK'S Sporting Goods (Pittsburgh, PA).

I was excited for this interview. I thought, “This is it! I finally found the job that will make it all worth it.” I payed out the job description/qualifications I printed and took notes on. They called and said tell us a little about your history in “the work world.” I proceeded to do so and then the women cut me off and said I don’t have enough experience. I was so confused I asked if they could tell me what they were looking for and then described everything that I had already told them. The women were very rude and seemed as uncomfortable during an interview as the one being interviewed.
