  • If you want to understand more about how we apply our research to real-world challenges and scientific problems, subscribe to the DeepMind podcast.

In the latest episode, Mathematician and broadcaster Hannah Fry takes a deep dive into:

    1. Our work with Moorfield identifying common eye diseases like diabetic retinopathy or age-related macular degeneration from routine scans.

    2. The AlphaFold team who are trying to better understand protein folding, a discovery that could one day help scientists treat diseases believed to involve misfolded proteins such as Parkinson’s, Huntington’s and cystic fibrosis.

    3. Our work with Google, building a safe and reliable system to cool its data centres, helping save around 30% of the energy needed.

DeepMind – Why Work For Us?

A community with a unique mission.

We’re a dedicated scientific community, working together to advance the state of the art in AI and ensure it’s used for widespread public benefit.

Our pioneering and collaborative culture is made up of people from unusually diverse backgrounds. Together, we build computer systems that learn how to solve problems and advance scientific discovery for all.

We’re looking for people with a lifelong commitment to learning, who are passionate about making a positive impact in the world. We’ve built a supportive and inclusive environment where collaboration is encouraged and learning is shared freely.

We don’t set limits based on what others think is possible or impossible. We drive ourselves and inspire each other to push boundaries and achieve ambitious goals.

We value our diversity of experience, knowledge, backgrounds, and perspectives and harness these qualities to discover connections, solve problems, and create extraordinary impact.

Our success depends on many teams joining together for a shared goal. No single discipline has all the answers needed to build AI, and we've found that many exciting new ideas come from dedicated collaboration between different fields. Learn more about our dedicated teams below.

Research

Our research teams work on cutting-edge computer science, neuroscience, ethics, and public policy to responsibly pioneer new AI systems. Research scientists and engineers collaborate across DeepMind and with our partners to create systems that can benefit all parts of society.

Engineering

Our engineers help accelerate our research by building, maintaining, and optimising the tools and environments we use. From developing bespoke environments to scaling research prototypes, our engineers enable us to perform safe and rigorous experimentation at scale.

Science

Our multidisciplinary group of researchers and engineers collaborate with expert partners on a wide range of scientific problems. From protein folding to quantum chemistry, we’re using AI to unlock some of the most fascinating challenges in the natural sciences.

Ethics & Society

Our interdisciplinary group of policy experts, philosophers, and researchers work with other groups in academia, civil society, and the broader AI community to address using new technologies, putting ethics into practice, and helping society address the impacts of AI.

DeepMind for Google

Our researchers and engineers work with our partners at Google to apply our systems in the real world. This collaboration has already reduced Google’s energy consumption and improved products that are in the hands of hundreds of millions of people around the world.

Operations

Our dedicated teams for recruitment, people development, property and workplace, travel, executive support, events, communications, finance, legal, and public engagement work across the organisation to maintain, optimise, and nurture our culture and world-leading research.

London

DeepMind London in King's Cross is home to most of our people. It’s the head office for our groundbreaking operations and ethics functions, the majority of our engineering and applied teams (including Science and DeepMind for Google), and it’s where we’re exploring the broadest range of research topics.

Alberta

Located in an inspiring, refurbished movie theatre in Edmonton, the DeepMind Alberta team is led by Richard Sutton, Michael Bowling, and Patrick Pilarski. The group collaborates closely with a variety of others across DeepMind including those studying fundamental reinforcement learning, robotics, games, and human-computer interaction.

Montreal

Led by Doina Precup, our Montreal office is home to a DeepMind research team that focuses on hierarchical and core reinforcement learning. Based in Google’s central Montreal office, the team brings together research scientists and engineers who focus on the problem of temporal abstraction and improvements in learning speed and planning capability.

Mountain View

DeepMind Mountain View primarily focuses on real-world applications of our research, in Google products and beyond. The impact of the team’s work is broad, and working at Google scale gives a unique opportunity to apply ground-breaking research to global and complex problems.

Paris

DeepMind Paris is our first research lab in continental Europe, focussed on fundamental AI research. Based in Google’s newly developed offices, the lab is led by Remi Munos, with a focus on reinforcement learning and multi-agent concepts.

Interning at DeepMind offers a unique opportunity to collaborate with some of the world’s leading thinkers in artificial intelligence and its application for social good. We offer hands-on experience working collaboratively on projects that push the frontiers of AI and science.

Research Interns work closely with our research scientists on projects relating to ongoing topics and current goals within our research teams. Research internships are open to candidates studying towards a PhD in machine learning, computer science, computational neuroscience, or a related field. Internships with our Science team are also open to those studying a range of natural sciences, including physics, chemistry and biology.

Engineering Internships are open to current degree students at any level (bachelors, masters, doctorate) in a technical subject (computer science, engineering, maths, physics, etc), who have some practical software engineering and machine learning experience.

We also offer internships across a number of our teams, including Ethics & Society and Operations.

Applications for 2020 internships will open on 19 August 2019.

Diversity matters.

We know that:

  • Building a diverse team is the right thing to do
  • Diverse teams produce the most innovative work
  • We’re working on technology that will impact all of society, so it needs to be shaped by as many perspectives as possible

We’re always looking for great people and we're committed to ensuring that all applicants and employees will be treated fairly and with respect, irrespective of their background and identity.

We also partner with academia and non-profits on scholarships and other opportunities for people from underrepresented backgrounds.
