Mission: We secure UK and global prosperity by promoting and financing international trade and investment, and championing free trade.
I worked at Department for International Trade (Less than a year)
The business development managers I worked under were all super nice and seemed genuinely interested in helping me learn (never seemed annoyed by my questions). The work was nicely varied, as I was given tasks by each manager in the different sectors in which they specialized, but they did allow me to focus more on those that interested me most, which was great! Also, I think an internship within the British Consulate looks decent on my resume.
I think for an internship the work was less menial than expected, but still somewhat repetitive and admin-y. Lots of spreadsheets!
Advice to Management
Only suggestion is to maybe seat your interns physically closer to the managers, as we were sort of placed in a quiet, far-off corner that was a tad bleak.
I applied online. I interviewed at Department for International Trade (Houston, TX) in July 2017.
From body language cues and the quality and tone of questions, it was clear from the start of the interview and throughout the process that I was not being held in genuine consideration. I presume they had preselected someone in mind before interviewing me. Disappointing to waste my time only to be notified weeks later.
