Design Within Reach – Why Work For Us?


Welcome to the best in modern design.

At Design Within Reach, we make authentic modern design accessible. "Within reach" means things not found elsewhere. It means in stock.

Our business started when founder Rob Forbes tried to furnish his apartment with the clean, simple classics he’d come to appreciate while living in London. He discovered that the work of designers like Saarinen, Eames and Bertoia were "out of reach" of anyone who did not know the secret handshake or have the patience to wait months for delivery.

There had to be a better way, so in 1999 we bought 20 containers of product, mailed out a catalog and waited for the phone to ring. (It didn’t for 24 hours, until we realized the nighttime answering machine had been accidentally left on.) The rest, as they say, is history. By giving customers access to the best in modern design – including iconic works that have been in production since the mid-20th century as well as innovative items designed today – we made design within reach.

Authenticity is something we’re proud to offer; elitism however is not. Visit any of our Studios and you’ll never see a "do not touch" sign. We invite you to linger, bring your dog or kids and join us for design events. Continue the experience here, at, where you’ll find everything we carry, plus additional finishes and styles not shown in our catalogs or Studios. And, of course, you can always call or Chat Live with our Connecticut-based office.

Working at Design Within Reach

Design Within Reach is the one-stop resource for the best in modern design. Founded in 1999, with the belief that great design should be accessible to everyone, DWR’s business has grown to include retail locations in the U.S. and Canada and a successful e-commerce website. Our retail Studios are local community centers for design: Customers will never see a “do not touch” sign and they’re invited to linger, bring their dog or kids and join us for design events. DWR employees – both in the field and at headquarters – are knowledgeable and passionate about modern design.

Working in our Stamford, Connecticut corporate offices
In October 2010, we relocated our San Francisco headquarters to Stamford, due to its proximity to New York City, vibrant available workforce, and the opportunity to be part of the exhilarating renewal taking place in Stamford’s South End. Our main offices are home to all three sales channels - Catalog, Web and Studios. Supporting departments range from finance to marketing to IT to customer service and sales.

Working in a DWR Studio
Serving as community centers for design, our Studios invite constant interaction between the customer, our furniture and our staff. Our Studio proprietors are encouraged to have a sense of ownership about their Studio, and hold in common an entrepreneurial spirit and a passion for design. The people who work in our Studios are all multi–taskers and can often be found working with customers, planning events and building local relationships.

Working at the Fulfillment Center
Centrally located in Northern Kentucky, our 315,000-square-foot Fulfillment Center serves the entire United States. To uphold our high shipping standards, employees work at a fast pace, receiving, packing and shipping merchandise; making for a challenging and exhilarating environment. Our corporate internship program is a comprehensive and immersive 11-week program that is specifically designed to give you the opportunity to learn and grow with the best in modern design. You'll work with your team to make an impact by supporting your department's initiatives in a variety of day to day tasks and take responsibility for a summer-long project from start to finish through the duration of the program. DWR's internship program includes a mentorship program, career workshops and the chance to interact with and learn from industry leaders from our executive team. All internship opportunities are paid positions.

    I have been working at Design Within Reach full-time (Less than a year)


    Flexible hours, business dress preferred (not a deal breaker for me, I prefer it) and family unit atmosphere. Plenty to learn and grow with the company, depends what you want out of the job. Great benefits package, not your typical retail store environment.

    Options to move up to Account Executive and further up in the company if desired. You get what you put into the job.


    Steep learning curve, so sink or swim! Most mistakes can be fixed, just don't make it a habit. Lots of gray area aka rules with exceptions to be aware of, but nothing that can't be learned if you put the effort in it.

    There can be low and high tides, be sure to know how to keep yourself busy and productive!

    I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Design Within Reach (Oxnard, CA) in January 2018.


    In person interview with the general manager and the sales lead. Second interview was over the phone with the regional manager. I received a call a week later with an offer.
