EBSCO – Why Work For Us?

undefined

EBSCO can be found in a wide range of industries. We connect students, academics and medical professionals to vital online journals and publications. We are among the nation’s leading outdoor brands. Our neighborhood developments are award winning and our business-to-business products are relied upon by companies large and small. We manufacture 3-ring binders and promotional packaging, steel joists, outdoor LED signs for churches, schools and businesses and merchandising displays. We are a leading manufacturer and distributor of licensed products to college bookstores. We sell promotional products, stand-up-desks, electrical charging stations, workspace product solutions and insurance. We have a media company with almost 40 brands providing publishing content and publication services to industries ranging from horticulture, to hunting, to healthcare. We offer simple magazine subscription services to professional offices with waiting rooms. We operate a research firm dedicated to publishing a best of home services guide.

We are a uniquely diversified company with opportunities in information technology, sales, customer service, marketing, human resources, operations, manufacturing, accounting and finance.

All together, EBSCO is more than 40 diverse companies employing nearly 6,000 people worldwide. We have the highest Dun & Bradstreet Financial Strength Rating that can be awarded, and we are consistently ranked among the top 200 largest privately held corporations by Forbes magazine.

The inspiration for what would eventually be known as EBSCO began in the 1930s, with a law student selling magazines door-to-door. The commissions earned on those subscriptions were an important source of depression era income for Elton B. Stephens. Soon the potential of the business overshadowed Elton’s law career and a fledgling company, which would over time expand across continents, was created.

EBSCO was founded in 1944, at the height of World War II. Our humble beginning was as a provider of products and services for men and women in the armed services. Our early endeavors helped shape us; at our core we are a sales driven organization. The international company that EBSCO has become continues to foster the same ideals for sales, service and entrepreneurship that guided Elton B. Stephens over 70 years ago.

As diverse as EBSCO is in its business categories, we are united by a set of guiding principles. These ideas reflect our heritage and values. They are apparent in how we conduct our businesses and ourselves. And it is these same principles which will guide us to be successful in the future.

REALIZE THAT BUSINESS IS A LONG-RUN GAME

We strive to continuously increase the value we provide to our customers, thereby maximizing long-term profits.

INVEST IN PEOPLE AND CULTIVATE PASSION

We offer the resources and environment that allow individuals to reach their potential, enabling us to realize our collective potential.

OPERATE WITH A DEFINED VISION AND A BIAS FOR ACTION

We create clear goals and then commit to their completion, refining our vision as we learn from our experiences.

COMMIT TO SUSTAINED SALES AND PROFIT GROWTH

We strive to maximize profits over the long run, reinvesting profits in our businesses in order to achieve sustained profit growth.

BE CUSTOMER FOCUSED AND SALES DRIVEN

We must always deliver products and services that retain and expand our customer base.

INSIST ON QUALITY FROM THE START

We are only as good as the quality of our product or service.

MANAGE AND MEASURE WHAT MATTERS

We stay focused on the right things by establishing and measuring appropriate goals.

FOSTER CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT

We understand that perfection is a process and not a state and are committed to methodically improving ourselves in all areas.

DO WHAT YOU SAY YOU WILL DO

We honor our commitments, individually and as a business.

LEAD WITH HUMILITY

We take our business very seriously, but don’t take ourselves too seriously.

At EBSCO we strive for an environment where people grow their careers because of our culture, not in spite of it. We pride ourselves in a management philosophy that removes barriers to personal advancement and stays open-minded to new ideas and opportunity.

EBSCO seeks people who are driven, eager to understand, and collaborative in their approach.

We are a uniquely diversified company with opportunities in information technology, sales, customer service, marketing, human resources, operations, manufacturing, accounting and finance.

But regardless of the job title, we believe each position is the starting point. People who are entrepreneurial, positively focused on the future and driven to discover what’s possible are successful at EBSCO.

EBSCO is driven to grow and we know the best way to do that is through fulfilled employees because they create satisfied customers. For these reasons, we provide competitive benefits that include comprehensive medical and dental with low co-pays and exceptional coverage. We also offer a credit union, tuition reimbursement, college scholarships and employee discounts. But perhaps no other single benefit is as frequently praised as our Savings and Profit Sharing Trust. EBSCO shares 15% of all pre-tax profits with our employees which has resulted in creating a profit sharing plan that has historically outperformed the typical 401(k) by a wide margin.

When our employees are successful, EBSCO is successful, and we share that success with the people who make it all possible.

We are committed to continuous improvement, understanding that change is necessary and realizing that perfection is a process and not a result. Every year, we award employees for ideas that help improve our companies. In the past two years ‘Progress Through Ideas’ awarded over $80,000 to our employees for their contributions to making us better.

I have been working at EBSCO full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

You will be hard pressed to find a company that does more for their employees on a regular basis to insure their success and well being, encouraging team work and personal growth consistently.

    Cons

Not really a negative thing, but some employees have been in the same work environment for many, many years - thus change does not come easily and skepticism naturally catches a ride. This shouldn't affect new progress, just slow it a little in taking place - but overall a reasonable trade off for loyalty.

    Advice to Management

Keep up your interest and communications in a visible way, everyone appreciates it.

    Senior Leadership Role Interview

    Anonymous Interview Candidate
    No Offer
    Negative Experience

    Interview

Ebsco's recruiter found me on Linked In for a very senior position and invited me to interview, apply and provide a lot of information about my background. She related that I was a solid candidate and that she would let me know in "about a week" if I was to meet with the EVP for an interview. I thanked her - and related that I would appreciate any timely follow up since I was recently burned by a few recruiters who never provided any feedback or status updates - they just blew me off after interviewing. The recruiter related that this was a bad practice and that she would take care not to forget me.
I followed up a week later - and she responded that she has not had any feedback but would let me know ASAP.
About two months go by without any feedback - so I reach out. The recruiter apologized for not following up - it turns out the position went on hold and then was changed to a much lower level position.
This is bad form on a few levels. One - Ebsco should figure out what they want before they turn their recruiters on to start getting candidates all worked up and active - thinking they have a shot at a good job. Two - when you make a commitment to someone who has spent the time to prepare for a solid interview, meet with you and then follow up with more work - you should at least respect them as a human being and respond in a timely manner.
This experience has burned me on this company. Good luck finding solid candidates in that cultural/intellectual mecca of Birmingham Alabama.
