Expedia Cares - Travel Inspires

Expedia Cares

Travel is a force for good.  It connects us culturally, emotionally and physically – it opens our eyes, our minds and our hearts.  And it changes how you see your place in the world.  Expedia's employees have the chance to see amazing things and explore new communities, but they are also encouraged to make a difference.  Through Expedia Cares, they can fight against inequality in all forms, help to shift circumstance and drive change in places that need it most.

Giving @ Work

Our commitment is about more than giving back in our communities.  It's about making a difference, and is a direct reflection of the interests and passions of our more than 22,000 employees worldwide.  To find out more about our giving efforts, check out our Expedia Cares website.

The Pillars of Expedia Cares

Matching Gifts & Volunteer Hour Match

We’re humbled by our team’s passion for individual giving and volunteering.  That’s why we honor their commitment by matching donations and the value of the time they volunteer – to reinforce their significant efforts and support the organizations they care about most.

Global & Local Volunteer Committees

Grassroots volunteer efforts contribute to the unique community cultivated at Expedia Group.  Our initiative, innovation, and compassion aren’t just reserved for work, they extend into all aspects of our lives.  That’s why many locations have employee-driven committees that source, plan and staff local volunteer opportunities, benefiting a variety of local causes.

Global Day of Caring & Global Month of Caring

This signature volunteering event is an extension of our team’s passion for giving back in their own communities.  Hosted in more than 50 countries during our Month of Giving, this event provides all Expedians the opportunity to join together, giving their time and talents to make meaningful contributions where they work and live.

Global Ambassador Program

Often called “the coolest field trip ever,” this program takes Expedians to a challenged destination, immersing them in the local culture to understand how we can help support tourism and sustainable living in the area.  The impact of these journeys is long-lasting, breaking down barriers and unveiling new possibilities for how we can impact the world together.

I have been working at Expedia full-time (Less than a year)

Expedia is the best place to work. I have been here for 11 months and enjoying every single day. The culture is upbeat, leadership is transparent , clear on direction, very well organized process oriented company. Awesome work life balance. The technology stack is cutting edge, if you love working on AWS then this is the place to be. Great learning opportunity, great location in downtown Chicago, amazing office space.

None that I can think of.

    Advice to Management

    Keep up the great work.

    Performance Engineer Interview

    Anonymous Employee in Bellevue, WA
    Accepted Offer
    Positive Experience
    Easy Interview

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 2+ months. I interviewed at Expedia (Bellevue, WA) in September 2010.

I was reached by a former colleague about an open position at Expedia. Applied online and got contacted after a week or so. Had one phone screening interview with the HR recruiter and one phone interview with the hiring manager in the first week.
A week after that, got contacted by the recruiter to arrange the remaining interviews. Since I was based abroad at the time, all were phone interviews. 4 phone interviews of about 45 minutes were scheduled. One with an engineering director, another one with the hiring manager and two with technical peers.
The meetings with the director and hiring manager were very relaxed and just went through a few problems they were having and how I could help with that.
The first technical interview was relatively easy and focused on main performance engineering standards and processes with a couple technical questions about Java. The second technical interview was focused on functional testing, which is not the position I applied for and have little knowledge about. Asked a few questions about test cases for a theoretical application and with the little knowledge I have on that area I managed to list a few positive, negative and non-functional test cases, but explained that this was not my area of expertise.
2 to 3 weeks after the interviews, the recruiter contacted me with the offer.

    Interview Questions

    • How does the heap work in Java?   Answer Question
    • List the functional test cases for this theoretical application.   1 Answer
    • How does garbage collection works in Java?   Answer Question

    Not much negotiation.
