Culture header

Today, as one of the nation's 60 largest bank holding companies and a full-service financial services provider with more than 150 years of experience, we're still focused on building our company one relationship at a time. But building relationships takes patience and commitment, and it requires a special kind of employee. Someone who's willing to consistently invest themselves not only in the interests of our customers, but in the greater good of our community.

That's why our entire corporate culture is built around finding the right people and empowering them to deliver excellence. We call it FIRSTPOWER, and it permeates every aspect of our competitive strategy to our community involvement. FIRSTPOWER is the attitude of embracing candor, change, inclusion and teamwork that every employee brings to the job each day.

It is evident in the way our people consistently embrace our shared values and vision for the future as well as the priority we have placed on diversity and inclusion.

The result is a work environment that fosters innovation, teamwork, customer advocacy and a clear understanding of how the contributions of each employee are woven together to define the success of the organization.

Diversity and Inclusion

At First Horizon, diversity is a business imperative. We know that leveraging the power of diversity and inclusion (D&I) through our three strategic pillars – workforce, workplace, and marketplace – is significant in order for us to meet our desire to build a culture of inclusion that fosters innovation, while maximizing business results.

Workforce

We are committed to continuous improvement in creating and sustaining a diverse and inclusive workforce through:

  • Recruitment, development, and advancement
  • Leadership and accountability
  • Continuous D&I communication

Workplace

The success of our diversity and inclusion efforts hinges on our ability to embed them into the fabric of our culture through:

  • Vision, strategy, and business case
  • Infrastructure and implementation
  • Education and training

Marketplace

We seek the growth of our business in the multicultural marketplace through dedicated programs that address:

  • Community, government relations, and social responsibility
  • Supplier diversity

Employee Engagement

We encourage employees to express their diverse viewpoints so that they are able to perform at their best, while maximizing their full potential. As a company, our focus on diversity and inclusion allows us to foster an environment where we celebrate the uniqueness of our employees, quickly adapt to change, drive blue chip performance, and ultimately create the place where the best and brightest want to work.

History Header

The First Horizon story is about enduring relationship with customers, employees and communities. Without them, no company could survive and thrive for 155 years.

Our story began in 1864, when Ohio businessman Frank S. Davis arrived in Memphis to open the city’s first national bank. A year earlier, Congress had created a federal system allowing banks to be chartered in Union-controlled cities within Confederate states. Memphis was such a city, and Davis saw a genuine need for banking and credit to finance rebuilding and new commercial growth. Davis’ foresight led him to found First National Bank of Memphis, which has evolved into the First Horizon Bank we know today.

First Horizon has served customers through civil war, two world wars, yellow fever epidemics, financial panics, the Great Depression and the Great Recession. Our customers and our companies have endured adversity, seized opportunity, and embraced change. We’re proud of our legacy, and we're focused on building for the future.

We’ve been recognized as an innovative user of technology, having introduced customers to innovations such as branch banking, drive-through banking, ATMs, remote deposit capture, and the Visa payroll card, and was among the first banks in the nation to offer mobile deposit. Our approximately 5,500 employees provide the highest quality service in banking, insurance, fixed-income investments, mortgage, credit and financial planning, and we claim some of the most loyal and satisfied customers in our industry.

Community Engagement

At First Horizon Bank, we understand the importance of a strong community and we are committed to meeting the financial needs of the communities we serve across our footprint.

In 2018, we announced our commitment to invest nearly $4 billion to broaden access to financial resources in underserved and low- to- moderate income communities in the Southeast region of the United States. The investment is designed to strengthen community, economic and small business development.

Our commitment includes mortgage and small business lending, community development lending and investments, philanthropy, and spending with minority-owned suppliers and marketing firms. It also includes innovative methods to increase the convenience and physical access to financial services in low- to moderate-income communities.

The five-year commitment includes the following priorities and targets:

  • Increasing home ownership: Fund $515 million in home purchase and rehabilitation mortgage lending to low- to moderate-income individuals and communities and to people of color and communities.
  • Building small business: Fund $1.9 billion in small business lending to businesses in low- to moderate-income areas and businesses with less than $1 million in gross annual revenue.
  • Fostering community development: Fund $1.5 billion in community development and multi-family lending and investments.
  • Strengthening communities: Fund $40 million in grants and philanthropy, including supporting workforce development, small business, housing counseling, Community Development Corporations (CDC), Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFI), and funding financial literacy and education programs for youth, adults and small business entrepreneurs.
  • Supporting supplier diversity: Devote three to six percent of the bank’s supplier spending to minority-owned businesses.

    Application

I applied online. The process took 2+ months. I interviewed at First Horizon (Memphis, TN) in June 2008.

    Interview

Initial job posting found on internet posting site. Contacted by HR rep for phone interview, then passed on to local manager and city executives for face to face interviews once approved by HR rep. Involved two rounds of local interviews, and then HR rep extended a verbal offer. I countered and the local hiring manager became involved to approve specifics. Written offer was made, which I accepted.

    Interview Questions

    • No unexpected questions that I can recall. Interviews were pretty straight forward.   Answer Question

    Negotiation

    Negotiated salary and relocation expenses.
