I have been working at Fort Worth Star-Telegram full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Historically very supportive to employees in that most felt valued. Working for a news gathering organization can be very satisfying, A force for good in the community. Generally concerned about providing quality services. Local brand still has value. Up until recently a very fun work environment.

    Cons

Resources can be scarce and large industry trends are forcing the local paper to compete more aggressively for advertising dollars. Digital revenue will be the saving grace but it can't come soon enough. My bet is that there will be more industry consolidation and a large digital player may acquire these properties on the cheap and transform them into an entity yet to be defined. In the mean time wrapping sales teams' brains around integrated digital ad strategies and selling them correctly will continue to be a challenge.

    Advice to Management

Keep investing in re-training, Be completely transparent about expectations and their sources. Trust that your ad sales staff is performing optimally and allow them the flexibility to accomplish their work. Review comparable industry income ranges for sales folks and restructure pay plans to remain competitive.

    Application

I applied online. The process took a week. I interviewed at Fort Worth Star-Telegram (Fort Worth, TX) in December 2015.

    Interview

Upon getting to the building, I met with my main interviewer. After spending about 20 minutes with him discussing my resume and portfolio, I met with the person who would be my direct supervisor. After that, I met with about six other editors one-on-one, who told me about the processes of the paper and what was to be expected of me, if I got the job.
