Because much of the underwriter’s work involves dealing with agents and other insurance professionals, excellent communication and interpersonal skills are also essential.

The people are fantastic and supportive and the philosophy is to make sound decisions, develop and maintain long term relationships, and grow the business for the benefit of all.
The work environment is more demanding than in year's past. Employees are expected to do more, have opinions they can support, and find solutions. Employees are given more ownership of their work and those that excel are rewarded, but the expectations of all have grown and not everyone can or is willing to meet the challenge.
Advice to Management
Keep communicating with employees so that those that fear or are challenged by the idea of change understand how important and necessary it is for survival.
I applied through an employee referral. The process took 6 weeks. I interviewed at GNY Insurance Companies (New York, NY) in December 2016.
There was a preliminary phone call with HR, and then an on-site interview. Met with 9 different people over the course of 5 hours which included a group lunch. I would label the interview format as traditional and professional. HR set up an agenda that was followed very closely, and they were sensitive to the travel time it took me to make and then leave the interview location, wrapping the day up around 3:30pm.
