I worked at Gem School full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

A fun work environment that allows teachers lot of creativity in how they conduct classes.

The company encourages teachers to have fun with students and make learning as engaging as possible.

Most teachers work primarily in the late afternoons which is great if you'd like to plan activities in the morning before work.

A good amount of time off - but limited to Japanese holidays.

    Cons

For whatever reason, usually sickness, teachers will have to miss classes and that will require scheduling changes to ensure classes still have a teacher. This can be frustrating if it occurs at the last minute. In my experience management does the best it can to minimize this but it can still be a challenge.

Gem School manages most of the teachers' financial obligations - rent, utilities, train reimbursements etc. This is to make it easier for teacher unfamiliar with Japan to get up and running but it can also be frustrating when it isn't clear or obvious how money is being taken from a teacher's paycheck. In my experience if there is a question management is able to provide documentation to validate everything, but compared to being in complete control of your finances it is a bit challenging.

    Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Gem School (Kanonji, Kagawa (Japan)) in February 2016.

    Interview

I applied online and was immediately contacted to schedule a Skype interview. They were short added and immediately offered me a job. I didn't know it at the time, but they are always short on staff. When I didn't get paid and my contract provisions weren't honored I understood why.
