Gong – Why Work With Us?

Our mission is to enable leading revenue teams to get the unfiltered truth about their customer interactions, their deals, and transform the way they go to market. By taking the guesswork out of sales, countless companies are closing deals faster and maintaining customer satisfaction.

Gong has eight operating principles that we use to manage our day-to-day with:

We don’t want just customers; we only want raving fans. We prioritize selling to customers that are a great fit for Gong, and do our utmost to create the best possible product and service experience. You cannot go wrong by making a customer happy.

We are never completely satisfied with our accomplishments. When we achieve new records, we celebrate, and then imagine new ones. Across the product and company we’re building, this applies to everything we do. Every individual and team at Gong strive to be the best at their craft.

Conventional wisdom yields conventional results. We want extraordinary results. We encourage ourselves to question common assumptions and “axioms”. This doesn’t mean we’re doing the opposite of conventional wisdom, but the notion that “everybody is doing it that way” just doesn’t cut it at Gong.

Gongsters optimize for the team win, and we strive to hire people who prioritize team wins above their own. We’re here to win as a team.

Instead of spending too much time discussing how we’re going to act, we simply act. We keep “work about work” and “plans for having plans” to the necessary minimum.

As bitter as they may be, we prefer to know the facts. Sugar-coating does not help make decisions or solve problem quickly. We encourage every Gongster to be direct, speak their mind, and expect the same from their peers.

Our vision will take a while to fulfill; When conflicted with taking a shortcut now vs. doing the right thing for the long term, we favor the long term.

Last but not least: While we’re very serious about our work, we don’t take ourselves too seriously. Have fun and enjoy the ride!

We truly believe that a multitude of voices drive innovation and creativity. Whether it’s our (S)Hero events that celebrate women in tech, or creating a safe space through our ERGs (#GongPride, #BlackGongsters, etc.), we strive to build diversity and  belonging into the overall strategy of the company.

I have been working at Gong full-time (Less than a year)

Gong has continually exceeded my expectations in every aspect - leadership, commitment to diversity, balancing agility/GST and setting the business and employees up for long-term success.

I'll break down a few highlights that really stand out:

Leadership: I can't say enough how good it feels to have seasoned, thoughtful leadership across the board. Amit and the whole executive team know what they are doing and it's visible in every decision that they make. But they're also endlessly humble, responsible, authentic, and the absolute best cheerleaders. You'll regularly see the C-Suite calling out employees in Slack for the great work that they do.

People programs: Since going remote, Gabby and the team have gone above and beyond to deliver a wide variety of awesome and engagement programs. Zoom workout classes with trainers? We got that. Coloring class for your kids? Got that too. Meditation? Cooking classes? Game nights? All of the above.

Commitment to diversity: Gong's BLM response was real and action-driven. As a new employee, I didn't know what to expect. But I was surprised when the company held a company-wide open mic essentially where anyone and everyone could share ideas for how Gong can bring more diversity to our own business and give back to our community. Then, they acted on it. Nearly all of the initiatives we set out to do are in progress - changing hiring practices and building a diverse candidate pipeline, building out ERGs, offering services and products to organizations we believe in. It comes from the top, but it also comes from everywhere. Employees individually stepped up to do the work which tells you a lot about culture.

People: My team members at Gong are some of the most creative and hard-working individuals I've ever had the pleasure of working with. If you see Gong everywhere on LinkedIn, it's because...the SDRs are literally getting public shout-outs from their prospects for creative/compelling messaging. THAT IS NOT NORMAL. You see folks from every team writing blogs, speaking on podcasts. Gongsters are truly the best in their field and it is inspiring to work alongside them.

Work/life balance, which is to be expected at a startup. Tough in an all-remote environment. But they're doing everything they can to combat Zoom fatigue and keep people energized.

Expectations are really high. Some might see that as a con, I see it as a pro though. People around you are always delivering.

    Advice to Management

Continue to make core operating principles central to decision-making. As we ramp up hiring and scale quickly, continue to prioritize the right fit > the right time. The right people will get us to where we need to go.

It pains me to write this. I was very excited when Gong contacted me for a phone screen and even more excited when I made it to the hiring manager round.

Unfortunately that excitement was squashed within minutes of hopping on the Zoom call.

I can admit that I did not give my best interview ever from my living room, but it seemed like the hiring manager had made his mind up about me before the interview began.

He never provided me with an overview of the role, never used my resume to ask meaningful questions about my experiences and how they would relate back to the role, and the questions he did ask were very generic (e.g. "What's your superpower?")

I have never participated in an interview where the hiring manager asked me nothing about my previous experience and didn't review the specifics of the role at hand. The absence of targeted questions based on my resume (as well as relevant general questions) made me feel as though I had wasted my time on a company that never took my candidacy seriously.

I know I'm talented and capable, but when an interview feels like a useless formality, it's pretty hard to draw the kind of connections needed to make a positive impression on an interviewer.
