Gresham Smith and Partners – Why Work For Us?

SHARE YOUR PASSION. FULFILL YOUR POTENTIAL.

At Gresham, Smith and Partners (GS&P), our people are the heart of our organization and it is through their talent, dedication and passion that we are able to accomplish extraordinary things on behalf of our clients and within our communities. And, we are committed to providing our employees a workplace that supports continued professional growth and opportunity within a culture that values a sense of belonging and community.

Global Presence

GS&P is one of the largest, most discipline-diverse design firms in the United States, with continued expansion of the practice internationally into China and Dubai. We boast a portfolio that includes a wide range of projects: from rural clinics to massive-scale healthcare campuses; from historical renovations to new Fortune 500 headquarters; from small town streetscapes to multi-State intelligent transportation systems; and, from community water pump stations to life-saving flood gates. As we continue to expand our service offerings and locations in a way that meets the demands of modern design and responsibility, we do so with the focused vision of “building value with our clients, our people and the world.”

Founded on Core Values

Founded in 1967, GS&P continues to evolve in order to stay competitive as social, technological, economic, environmental and political climates change. And we are poised for continued success as we remain focused on smart, sustainable growth strategies. However we may evolve, one thing will remain constant, and that’s being centered on our core values of Commitment, Integrity, Respect and Teamwork.

We encourage you to explore our Glassdoor profile and www.greshamsmith.com so you can learn how you can share your passion and fulfill your potential working on the GS&P team.

Life at GS&P

Our teams are made up of talented, diverse and passionate people striving to accomplish extraordinary things, and it's our goal to create a workplace that contributes to the professional and personal goals of everyone.

"As a long-time employee in our Ft. Lauderdale office, I have seen how true partnership and commitment to making clients happy pays off. I think our success is possible because of our teamwork and support we provide our clients. You will win some and lose some — especially in the business of architecture and design — but my experience has been that you will win a lot more with our client-centered approach. It is always more fulfilling when we are all in it together as a team to achieve success."
LUIS CANO, AIA, LEED AP BD+C, EDAC
SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT, HEALTHCARE, MIAMI, FLORIDA

“What most stands out to me as a GS&P employee is the company’s focus on the ‘whole you.’ Saying they offer work/life balance doesn’t paint a complete picture because outside of work, life for so many of us is focused on everyone else. But I am a firm believer in “putting your own oxygen mask on first,” just like a flight attendant instructs on a plane. GS&P goes beyond work/life balance by incorporating creative ways to help us take care of ourselves. In the Nashville office, a bell rings each day at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. reminding us to stand up and stretch. And our firmwide MOV challenges encourage staff to stay active. Placing an emphasis on well-being helps us all be healthier, happier and more productive.”

VALARIE FRANKLIN, ARCHITECT, CORPORATE+URBAN DESIGN, NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE

“I always think that the heart of our work is that "we're helping people go somewhere," which can mean helping businesses meet goals or their patrons find services. But because much of my design work is for colleges and universities, "helping people go somewhere" becomes more fulfilling (and makes design more challenging) when I think about how my work might shape the experiences of students and have a positive effect on the rest of their lives.”
PATRICK GILBERT, AIA, LEED AP
SENIOR ARCHITECT, CORPORATE+URBAN DESIGN, NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE

“I’m inspired by the interest GS&P takes in communities. Employees are encouraged to find ways to share our passions and skills outside of the office, and we’re offered flexibility to enable that involvement. I am proud to volunteer with the City of Children non-profit, helping develop rainwater harvesting systems during mission trips to Ensenada, Mexico, and mentoring some of the city’s young female students (many of whom are aspiring engineers!). I feel fully supported by my managers and teammates, and I know they trust me to get my work done even when my schedule becomes hectic.”
AIZA JOSE, Ph.D., P.E., LEED AP
SENIOR ENGINEER, WATER RESOURCES, DALLAS, TEXAS

“While at GS&P, I’ve had the opportunity to be involved with the local IIDA chapter and also been able to serve as a preceptor in the design program at a local university. Volunteering at the university gives me the opportunity to keep abreast of the technology and methods being introduced in the academic arena. At the same time, I’m able to impart the practical knowledge that I’ve gained with GS&P. GS&P has not only encouraged my participation, but has also been extremely accommodating.”
DEXTER CARTY, INTERIOR DESIGNER, HEALTHCARE, BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA

“What originally attracted me to GS&P, and has continued over the past five years, is the company’s focus on developing its staff and embracing change. Change is scary for most folks and GS&P has found a balance of being a stable business while encouraging its staff to find new ways to improve procedures, processes and functions. GS&P has supported and challenged me in my career growth, and I am a stronger professional and contributor due to this positive environment.”
KENT BLACK, P.E. EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT, TRANSPORTATION, ATLANTA, GEORGIA

From the time that I started with GS&P, I got to work on a variety of different projects and was involved with developing solutions to help our clients. I often get to visit with the clients before and after a project, and I can see the impact that our work has on our client’s efforts to become more sustainable. Each project presents different and exciting challenges, making my work very fulfilling.”
DEVON SEAL, P.E., MBA
CHEMICAL ENGINEER, ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES, COLUMBUS, OHIO

“As an employee, wife and mother of two boys, work-life balance is essential to me. I am proud to be a part of a firm that not only strives for the best with their clients but also embraces this vision for their employees as well. Thank you GS&P for allowing me the flexibility to thrive in both the workplace and at home!”
MELISSA HIGGINBOTHAM, ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT, TRANSPORTATION, NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE

“I bought a bicycle in 2013 for my first ‘Bike to Work Day’ as a GS&P employee. I’ve been commuting to work (and most everywhere else) year-round ever since, and several of my Louisville colleagues are also bike riders. It allows us to explore the city and see its nuanced details in a new light. Riding a bike teaches you a tremendous amount about how to successfully design and implement alternative transportation solutions for our clients. We’re truly walking the talk, and designing based on experience. It has also given us many fantastic opportunities to bond as a team.”
Amin Omidy, ASLA, PLA
LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT, LAND PLANNING & DESIGN, LOUISVILLE, KY

“Why have I stayed with GS&P for nearly 20 years? It’s simple really — the PEOPLE. My HR team members are like family to me. Work is work, but what gives me reason to return is the camaraderie of our team. We are all better collectively and it is rewarding to see the results of our work when we combine our diverse strengths on a project. And we have a lot of fun doing it which for me, is definitely a plus!”
GAIL PACE, HR COMMUNICATIONS MANAGER, NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE

“Few things are as reassuring as knowing that, each and every day, you and the people you work with, will be bringing your “A game” to work. You know that you’re coming into a setting where you’re going to give it your all to help your team, not because it’s your job, but because you want to, and because you know that your team is going to do the exact same for you. Our people are team driven, motivated and always ready for a good challenge.”
RAY WONG, AIA, EDAC, LEED GA, NCARB
ARCHITECT, HEALTHCARE, TAMPA, FLORIDA

Your GS&P Career

Professional Development

We value the future of our employees as much, if not more, than the experiences that led them here. Professional growth is absolutely necessary in our industries, and we fully support our employees’ efforts of improving their design solutions, industry relationships, discipline knowledge and clients’ experiences. For example:

  • Provide training materials and exam reimbursement for pursuing and achieving professional licensure and registrations
  • Assist licensed professionals with continuing education programs, job-specialty competencies and paid annual registration fees
  • Reimbursement of eligible fees and expenses for professional society memberships and job-related professional societies
  • Training both in and out-of house, as well as seminar, webinar, and professional conference attendance
  • Leadership opportunities in addition to primary job function, mentorship and intern development
  • Exposure and involvement with cross-functional teams and diverse projects

Work/Life Balance

Great work is extremely important to us, but not to the detriment of your personal life. We recognize the importance of balancing work and home, and offer many flexible work arrangements to help accommodate the diverse needs and commitments of our employees.

    Pros

I have been with GS&P for four years now and only have positive things to say about the company. I work with an extremely talented group of colleagues on a daily basis that make it a pleasure to do my job. What leads me to this review is the level of compassion I have received across the board from management during a very difficult time in my life due to the illness of a parent. Those I have directly worked for (and above) have shown me nothing but compassion in giving me the flexibility to telecommute so I can be closer to my parents and at their side when my dad was having major surgeries. It has demonstrated to me that GS&P truly do honor the values of a work/life balance, which has just meant so much. I can’t imagine going through this chapter of my life without their support. They are the best!

    Cons

I wish GS&P had regional offices in every state! But they're certainly getting there!

    Advice to Management

Please continue to remain flexible and compassionate when it comes to personal situations such as an illness in the family or other personal matters. That human touch in a corporate world has not only meant a lot to me but also to my family.

I applied through college or university. I interviewed at Gresham Smith and Partners.

    Interview

The interview process was smooth with questions asking about job experience and classes taken. I did get an internship and later job offer. It is a great company to work for and great location being downtown Nashville at the time.
