Greystar on Millennials, Smart Homes & Industry Challenges
Bob Faith, Greystar Chairman, Founder and CEO, discusses the current state of the multifamily industry.
Back in 1993, when Founder, Chairman, and CEO Bob Faith set out to build Greystar, he saw a highly fragmented multifamily industry that was more focused on assets than people. He envisioned the need for an industry leader, a blue-chip company that operated with the highest integrity and character in delivering world-class services to residents, property owners and investors in multifamily real estate. He said, “Why not us? Let’s go be that company.” With a winning strategy and a focus on people, Greystar set out to meet that need -- guided by the mission of enriching the lives of those we touch by doing things the right way.
Greystar has learned what’s important to people when it comes to a place to call home and the services that enhance the living experience. And that’s why we put our heart and soul into providing beautiful living environments. We’re thankful for this privilege and take deep pride in knowing that our homes are a place where residents celebrate life’s important moments with friends and family.
We’ve also put our heart and soul into building our company by hiring the best people in the business. “Our core values and our people are at the heart of everything we do,” says Bob. “Though times and technology may change, it all comes back to people, and it’s our people who’ve made Greystar the global multifamily housing leader.”
At Greystar, we care about our residents, clients, and partners -- and it shows. We didn’t set out to be the biggest, only to be the best. Our focus on people, genuine relationships, and shared values has created a unique and defining company culture.
Every day, we work together to make a difference. These interactions form a distinct experience that we’re known for, and that people have come to expect from Greystar, and we demand of ourselves.
Pillars of Excellence
Fortified with a smart business plan and the intent to bring world-class service to the multifamily real estate industry, Greystar has grown from its start in Houston, Texas - with 9,000 managed residences - to become a global leader.
When we founded Greystar in 1993, we did it with a clear idea of where the company would be in 5, 10, and even 20 years. Establishing a presence in desirable real estate markets and then staying in those markets with property management experts is one part of the strategy that positioned Greystar for growth. Developing strong investment and development divisions of the company was another part that has allowed us to choose timely real estate projects while riding out the ups and downs of the market. We also realized the importance of spotting trends on an international level, but implementing them at the local level. Finally, we believed partners who have ownership in the business are the best people to oversee each local and regional market. It’s an approach that has allowed us to establish and maintain an entrepreneurial spirit that continues to attract high-quality clients, investors and team members to the company.
Greystar will continue to redefine excellence in multifamily real estate through its unwavering commitment to operational excellence and by investing in the most talented people in the industry. These tenets have allowed us to become one of the largest and most respected companies.
At Greystar, we know that our ongoing success and continued growth aren’t an accident; they’re the result of our employees’ passion and dedication. Greystar helps foster that pride in a job well done through:

I have been working at Greystar part-time
Great company culture and core values. The company is built of pillars of excellence that hold the foundation and Core values.
In any high volume business you will come across unpleasant people that will be rude regardless of your level of service. This being said like most businesses you can encounter rude potential residents.
Advice to Management
Keep up the good work. I have been encouraged to learn and grow since I started with the company last year.
I applied in-person. I interviewed at Greystar (Williston, ND) in April 2018.
My recent interview was intense but rightly so, as I applied for a huge role. It was fast paced and to the point. Some questions had me thinking, and even showed me a little about myself.
