Back in 1993, when Founder, Chairman, and CEO Bob Faith set out to build Greystar, he saw a highly fragmented multifamily industry that was more focused on assets than people. Fortified with a smart business plan and the intent to bring world-class service to the multifamily real estate industry, Greystar has grown from its start in Houston, Texas - with 9,000 managed residences - to become a global leader.

When we founded Greystar in 1993, we did it with a clear idea of where the company would be in 5, 10, and even 20 years. Establishing a presence in desirable real estate markets and then staying in those markets with property management experts is one part of the strategy that positioned Greystar for growth. Developing strong investment and development divisions of the company was another part that has allowed us to choose timely real estate projects while riding out the ups and downs of the market. Give a Little. Change a Lot.

Greystar Giving is a company-wide philanthropic effort. It was launched in 2010 with the challenge of raising $50,000 for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital®. Greystar not only met that challenge, but has gone on to contribute $3.8 million to St. Jude. Additionally, Greystar team members have actively supported Camp Hope, a PTSD Foundation of America non-profit organization at a grassroots level since 2011. In 2014, we expanded Greystar Giving to formally include Camp Hope.

    I've been with Greystar 10+ years this go-round, 13+ if you count my previous stints as well. I started out onsite and came back to the firm in an entry level corporate position and have worked my way into a leadership role. This firm, unlike any I've ever been a part of, rewards those who are willing to put in long hours and extra work to achieve amazing results. If you put your head down and do the work, you will have the opportunity to have an amazing career!

    Do promotional opportunities at Greystar sometimes take longer than they might at other firms...yes, sometimes. However the career ladder at Greystar is so much bigger than other firms, the sky is truly the limit? I've seen onsite property managers become an integral part of our internal development team, corporate analysts become leaders in the financial services team, assistant managers promote into the asset management name it. Opportunities abound for those who can be patient and continue to excel.

    Sometimes we roll new products or service offerings out too quickly without fully vetting the potential downside. The effort required to implement these services offerings generally trickle down to the site level, which can be stressful and challenging on site teams. Sometimes we need to slow down and make sure we've 'checked all the boxes' before rolling out new technology to ensure it can be rolled out effectively and efficiently. That said, I'd rather be a part of an organization that is willing to try new things than one that remains stagnant is content with business as usual.

    Advice to Management

    Be more transparent with the issues you are facing so team members throughout the organization know WHY things are happening the way they are sooner, which will increase their buy-in and understanding of what may be temporary setbacks or increases in stress. If they know why things are happening, they will be more likely to go that extra mile to help achieve great things!
