On April 5, 1885 the Michigan Mutual Tornado, Cyclone and Windstorm Company was founded by Daniel Webster (D.W.) Rogers. Today, we are an award-winning, quality organization with financial stability equaled by few in the industry.
In 1880, and again in 1882, tornadoes tore through parts of the small community of Hastings, Michigan, destroying over $225,000 worth of property. At the time, this amount was nearly 500 times the cost of a new home. D.W. Rogers, a local farmer, took action. At his request, his brother, state legislator Jeremiah Rogers, sponsored a bill legalizing the formation of windstorm insurance companies in Michigan, which became law in February of 1885.
On April 5, 1885, the Hastings-based Michigan Mutual Tornado, Cyclone and Windstorm Insurance Company was incorporated. By 1908, "The Windstorm Company" had grown from 160 to 43,000 policyholders, sharing $74,000,000 of insurance in force. At the end of 1925 the company was the second largest mutual windstorm insurance company in the world. Prosperity continued through the 1930's, 40's and 50's, even during the Great Depression.
On January 15, 1959, "The Windstorm Company" formally reorganized as a general, non-assessable mutual known as Hastings Mutual Insurance Company. We remain committed to technological advances, innovative products and the independent agency system, with over 900 agencies servicing Michigan, Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana and Ohio.
For well over 100 years, Hastings Mutual Insurance Company has built an outstanding reputation based on quality customer service and needed insurance products, backed by sound company finances. We are indeed proud of our past and look forward to a progressive future.

I have been working at Hastings Mutual full-time
Hastings Mutual has a solid industry reputation and rating. As an employer, they are big enough to offer opportunities to grow and develop in most areas which is great. They are also small enough for you to not feel like you're just feeding the machine, either. People are great overall, intelligent and approachable is the culture here, from CEO down to entry-level. Benefits and 401k are pretty solid, as is PTO. Great organization all around!
Given its small-town background and location, it's a bit slower to change than other companies, but there are some big picture plans in place. Some applications/technology are very dated yet the Guidewire implementation is huge and will eliminate that. Older building/campus but it's being updated (slowly). The only odd elements are the "dress-up days" where everyone has to dress up when the Board of Directors are onsite and the parking lot which assigns spots based on seniority. You have to be there 15 years to get one! Having a long walk is not great in Michigan winters.
Advice to Management
Keep it up in regards to evolving the company towards the future. HMIC has a great history and legacy but you can't rest on that. Rethink some company traditions just because they're traditions; change is going to be an element especially if you want to grow. Otherwise, keep up the great work!
I applied online. The process took 5 weeks. I interviewed at Hastings Mutual (Hastings, MI) in July 2017.
Initial screen with Human Resources which was standard but more conversational, then they came back and brought me onsite for an interview with the hiring manager and a few other employees in the department. Not incredibly difficult, would say a pretty typical experience.
