On April 5, 1885 the Michigan Mutual Tornado, Cyclone and Windstorm Company was founded by Daniel Webster (D.W.) Rogers. Today, we are an award-winning, quality organization with financial stability equaled by few in the industry.
In 1880, and again in 1882, tornadoes tore through parts of the small community of Hastings, Michigan, destroying over $225,000 worth of property. At the time, this amount was nearly 500 times the cost of a new home. D.W. Rogers, a local farmer, took action. At his request, his brother, state legislator Jeremiah Rogers, sponsored a bill legalizing the formation of windstorm insurance companies in Michigan, which became law in February of 1885.
On April 5, 1885, the Hastings-based Michigan Mutual Tornado, Cyclone and Windstorm Insurance Company was incorporated. By 1908, "The Windstorm Company" had grown from 160 to 43,000 policyholders, sharing $74,000,000 of insurance in force. At the end of 1925 the company was the second largest mutual windstorm insurance company in the world. Prosperity continued through the 1930's, 40's and 50's, even during the Great Depression.
On January 15, 1959, "The Windstorm Company" formally reorganized as a general, non-assessable mutual known as Hastings Mutual Insurance Company. We remain committed to technological advances, innovative products and the independent agency system, with over 900 agencies servicing Michigan, Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana and Ohio.
For well over 100 years, Hastings Mutual Insurance Company has built an outstanding reputation based on quality customer service and needed insurance products, backed by sound company finances. We are indeed proud of our past and look forward to a progressive future.

I have been working at Hastings Mutual full-time (More than 3 years)
Great people all-around. I've never witnessed any backstabbing or drama. Good reputation and name in the industry, even for a smaller carrier. Many big changes in motion like other reviews have mentioned, BTP being the biggest. Benefits are decent, and there is a bonus program. Pay is average. The cafeteria is nice, especially during the winter.
Underwriting has had many leadership changes, for various reasons. For a while there was a lot of uncertainty. There is new leadership in place which helps, but it's too early to tell. There tends to be a divide among some departments like marketing and underwriting. BTP is on paper going to really help but getting there is tough.
Advice to Management
Keep looking for ways to increase efficiency and get Guidewire fully implemented so its benefits can be really realized. Others have mentioned the reserved parking based on tenure. You'll upset a few by getting rid of it but make more happy if you do.
I applied through an employee referral. The process took 3+ months. I interviewed at Hastings Mutual (Hastings, MI) in March 2018.
Two phone interviews one to discuss job with HR and Talent recruiter and one to discuss job with management and hiring team. Then on site interview face to face with hiring team and other managers later in the process to see if we matched well.
