I have been working at Hattiesburg Public Schools full-time (More than a year)
Hattiesburg Public School District once had an excellent reputation for excelling in academics and extra-curricular activities. The district has one of the top forensic and debate teams in the nation, and an orchestra to match. The career and technical education programs are rigorous and prepare the students for the world of work and college level study. Each school and employee are equipped with the latest technology that surpasses that of many larger school districts.
The school district has an alarmingly high turnover rate and individuals who would do well in higher positions are often overlooked. While the workload is often overwhelming and many administrators and individuals push their duties onto other people. The lack of discipline at CERTAIN schools can be attributed to the lack of proper leadership and students not being held accountable for their actions. Many issues are swept under the rug because of the bottom line "dollars."
Advice to Management
Stop spending so much money on travel.....then you won't have to cut teacher days or vital positions. Who sends 15 administrators to Nashville and pays for them to stay at the Grand Ole Opry Hotel and you just cut educator pay and SEVERAL KEY positions that improved student attendance and behavior? Also, when you continue to lose TOP staff to neighboring districts (often for less money) then its time to re-evaluate what you are doing.
I applied online. The process took 2+ months. I interviewed at Hattiesburg Public Schools in June 2012.
I submitted an online application and I was called about 3 weeks later. I was interviewed with a panel of 7 employees for approximately one hour. Everyone in the interview asked me questions and I was also asked situational questions also.
There was no negotiation.
