I have been working at Hickory Daily Record as a contractor

    Pros

Whether you're an professional writer or just beginning an internship HDR is great place to refine and improve your writing skills. They are extremely flexible with interns, as they do not currently have a program in place for internships, your internship curriculum from school will be fine.

The news room feels like a family once you get to know everyone and management isn't afraid to let you know that you are doing a great job.

Catawba County is typically a conservative area, however, the paper is fair to both sides of the political spectrum.

    Cons

As just a part-time worker I don't currently have anything bad to say about the paper.

    Advice to Management

Don't be afraid to shoot your writers, ad sales, account coordinators, etc. an email congratulating them on a good job. Highlight those that go above and beyond what is required.

    Application

I applied online. The process took 1+ week. I interviewed at Hickory Daily Record.

    Interview

Very thorough but good experience. Sat down and chatted with editor. Met publisher, other reporters who stopped in. Went to lunch with editor and a couple of reporters. Then went back and sat down with the editor, talked more. Got the feeling a lot of the interview process was about getting to know me as a person.
