Hill+Knowlton Strategies – Why Work For Us?

At H+K Strategies we were the first to do many things, which is why innovation is so important to us, and why it is a driving pillar of our business plan, and our culture. To start, we were the first international public relations firm, the first to open an office in the Middle East and the first to hold a public relations event in Tiananmen Square.

As we work to change the future of communications across the globe, we’re looking for curious, smart and passionate people who want to be part of many more firsts.

A respected, strategic communications firm with deep roots in every region of the globe, we’ve been recognized as a best workplace for women and working parents. Every day, over 2,500 people choose to come work for and grow long and fulfilling careers at Hill+Knowlton Strategies.

H+K Strategies offers senior counsel, insightful research and strategic communications planning throughout the world. We have over 87 offices around the globe, and our clients represent 59 of Interbrand's 2013 Top 100 Global Brands. 50 percent of global Fortune 500 companies have chosen to work with our firm, and our relationship with WPP - one of the world's largest communications groups - gives us an unmatched worldwide presence.

Our firm has been innovating influence for nearly 90 years, and our world-class teams of trusted advisors and creative experts have a wealth of experience in strengthening brands, reputations and bottom lines. Our teams collaborate across time zones, languages and cultures to engage in public conversations that help clients make solid decisions and craft compelling messages.

To achieve success in today's business environment, companies must look beyond traditional sources of insight and advice. We believe in the importance of the public, and our wisdom about that area is as actionable as traditional counsel regarding management, finance or law. Our goal is to put the public back into public relations, and that charge shapes every area of our practice.

On a global scale, the public is now connected in ways that put the reputations of corporations, institutions, products and high-profile individuals in its hands. There is no longer simply a target audience to be reached and persuaded, nor distinct "publics" to deal with individually. They are now a collective, united force that must be factored into decisions made at the highest levels of leadership.

Because the public is no longer bound by geographic borders or limited by language or culture, disintermediation is the norm. The old filters and boundaries no longer apply. Our clients are demanding global strategies to address the risks and rewards associated with corporate reputation. H+K Strategies has built a platform that allows us to meet these demands and to grow with our clients in this new and exciting landscape where the public comes first.

We established the field of strategic communications more than 85 years ago. Today, we uphold our stated commitment to offering the best in our industry.

In 1927 as the nation was sliding into the worst economic disaster in history, John W. Hill had the courage to walk away from a secure job to follow his dream. Hill left a successful newspaper career to open a public relations firm in Cleveland. His early clients were banks, steel manufacturers and other industrial companies in the Midwest. When one of the banks failed, he partnered with its public relations director, Donald Knowlton.

Despite the country’s economic turmoil, Hill & Knowlton grew quickly. Hill moved the firm's headquarters to New York in 1934 to serve as public relations counsel to the American Iron and Steel Institute. Knowlton stayed in Ohio and operated Hill & Knowlton of Cleveland as a separate entity.

In 1952 when companies began expanding their business to other countries, Hill took advantage of the trend and created a network of affiliates across Europe. Hill & Knowlton soon became the first multinational public relations company. Hill managed the firm until 1962 and remained active in it until shortly before his death in 1977.

Hill & Knowlton was acquired in 1980 by JWT Group Inc. (J. Walter Thompson). WPP Group, the world’s largest communications services group, acquired JWT in 1987 along with Hill & Knowlton.

Meanwhile, Jack Martin, a former top aide to U.S. Sen. Lloyd Bentsen of Texas, started Public Strategies, Inc. in 1988 as a public affairs and business advisory firm. Its rapid growth and success eventually attracted the attention of WPP Group, which acquired Public Strategies in 2006.

In 2011, Martin became global chairman and CEO of Hill+Knowlton Strategies. H+K and Public Strategies, both of which are still owned by WPP, now share several executives from the leadership team. Each firm offers clients a unique combination of global expertise, world-class talent and strong corporate communications, public affairs, research and digital capabilities.

H+K Strategies today continues John Hill’s legacy as a global public relations and public affairs consultancy with expert reach, deep knowledge and a track record of client success. We have worked with more than half of all Fortune 500 companies somewhere in the world. Today, our teams of strategic counselors, trusted advisors and creative experts work out of more than 87 offices across the globe.

At H+K Strategies we were the first to do many things. To start, we were the first international public relations firm, the first to open an office in the Middle East and the first to hold a public relations event in Tiananmen Square.

As we work to change the future of communications across the globe, we’re looking for curious, smart and passionate people who want to be part of many more firsts.

If you are among the very best, the brightest and the most innovative in the communications industry – or if that’s what you aspire to be – we want to hear from you.

Supporting our People -- Resources, Training, Mobility + Mentoring

Professional Development

At H+K we define professional development a little differently. It’s not just about training, though we’ve got that covered with our global training platform H+K University. And it’s not just about helping staff define their career path through mentoring and regular performance discussions. We do that, too.

It’s truly about helping our people find their way.  Everyone is on a unique journey and we get that. For one person, traditional training may be exactly what they need to grow their consulting skills. For another, the opportunity to work on a global account or to spend time in an overseas office may be the critical next step. Because we know everyone is different, we lay a foundation through training that is made available to everyone, but then we customize a path, the right path, to take our people further.

Through H+K University, all employees have access to a long list of consistent, highly relevant training courses that cover critical skills in communications and consulting, with an emphasis on the modern skills needed in today’s economy.

Add to this, a robust mobility and transfers program, a global virtual mentoring program and more, and you’ve got quite a menu to choose from to help you on your way.

Mobility + Transfers

Imagine starting your career in our Washington, DC office, and then, after a few years, taking on a three-month international assignment in Rio, and then possibly, transferring to Sydney to round out your career? Sound out of reach? Well, not only is it possible, but a global network, it can happen at H+K.

We are committed to strengthening our network, whether that means expanding our reach in China and Africa, or by facilitating mobility opportunities for our people, promoting our strong talent from within and putting them in to expanded roles where they can continue to grow.

Local + Global Mentoring Opportunities

Recognizing the powerful and long lasting impact a mentoring relationship can have on one’s career, H+K has an active, global virtual mentoring program in place that connects colleagues from across our network with one another. Through weekly check-ins, staff interact with colleagues across the globe and discuss a variety of issues from professional development, career progression, challenging client assignments and other interpersonal topics.

More mentoring happens at the regional level. Women of H+K U.S., for instance, have the opportunity to participate in mentorHER, the formal mentoring program of our H+K HER (Helping Executives Rise) women’s network. The goal of mentorHER is to connect mentors and mentees to more women in the firm, provide real-world exposure to career paths, develop leadership skills, and to give all parties an opportunity to discuss challenges and opportunities.

Additionally, many of our offices have robust mentoring programs in place designed to foster an additional two-way exchange of perspectives. All new hires in our Austin, Texas office, for example, are assigned a mentor to help make their first few months at H+K as successful as possible. We have found that both the mentor and the mentee benefit tremendously from these relationships and are committed to bringing as many opportunities to our staff as we can.

This is just a sampling of the ways we support our staff. If you have questions and want to learn more, email us at

Interested in starting a career in public relations? Well, look no further than H+K Strategies. There is no better place to learn about communications than in one our U.S. or global offices, where you will have the unique importunity to experience the depth of a global agency, but also feel right at home in the close knit community of our local offices. You’ll get to work with the best in the business day in and day out. Who else can say they offer that?

Our Program

H+K offers a full time (40 hours/week) paid fellowship (or internship) program designed to introduce recent graduates to the day-to-day business of a strategic communications firm and help develop the essential written and oral communication skills needed to move into a regular, full-time position with a PR agency. As such, we prefer candidates who have completed their undergraduate education, preferably in the Communications, Public Relations or Journalism fields (or related disciplines) and are available to continue on past the minimum three-month period.

Fellows (or interns) will be assigned to work with a mid-level liaison on their respective team. Assignments are generally made on the basis of staffing needs for each client account, but whenever possible, we will match the assignment with the intern's personal skills and interests.

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Hill+Knowlton Strategies in May 2016.

The interview process took place over 2-3 weeks from initial phone screen to offer. I was first called by a recruiter in New York for a quick phone screen, then had a phone interview, then a team interview, then a written test before the offer. Everyone was very friendly and there was constant communication throughout the whole process.
