If you served in the military during the Iraq and Afghanistan wars (September 11, 2001 and forward), were honorably discharged, and have a high school diploma or equivalent, you can apply for the WOS/VETalent program at

Awards & Recognition
Horizon BCBSNJ is proud to be recognized for our military friendly policies and support of the U.S. Military by several organizations including G.I. Jobs and Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR).

Our Promise:  To serve with excellence and dedication; to provide peace of mind for those who depend on us; and to enrich the lives and health of our members and the communities we serve.

To fulfill Our Promise and our role as a leading corporate citizen, Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey provides foundation grants, corporate philanthropy programs and employee giving and volunteer programs to benefit residents of New Jersey – where the company and its offices have been located for more than 80 years.

To facilitate its charitable giving, in 2004, Horizon BCBSNJ established The Horizon Foundation for New Jersey to promote health, well-being and quality of life in New Jersey’s communities.  Since its inception, the Foundation has made more than 965 grants to New Jersey non-profit organizations, totaling more than $34 million.  The majority of these grants have addressed key health issues affecting New Jersey residents, such as efforts to prevent and educate about health conditions like asthma, cancer, diabetes, heart disease and obesity.

In addition to funding projects that are submitted for consideration through the Foundation’s online grant application system, the Foundation develops its own statewide, signature initiatives.  These include Healthy U, a childhood obesity prevention program serving more than 40,000 children through a collaboration with the Foundation and the New Jersey YMCA State Alliance.  The Foundation has awarded $3.45 million in grants for Healthy U since its inception in January, 2008.

Another Foundation signature program is the Health Center Initiative.  Since this program's inception in 2007, the Foundation has awarded $7 million in grants to 25 Federally Qualified Health Centers, free/volunteer clinics and independent clinics around the state to increase access to care for the state’s uninsured and underserved individuals. This seven-year initiative will end in 2014.

In addition, the Foundation has contributed more than $1.4 million to match Horizon BCBSNJ employees’ contributions to eligible New Jersey non-profit organizations and higher education institutions.  Through the Horizon Cares Matching Gifts Program, the Foundation matches employees’ donations to such organizations on a dollar-for-dollar basis.  The Program also offers special matching gifts programs in response to disasters, such as Hurricane Sandy and Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines.

Horizon BCBSNJ also offers the Horizon Cares employee volunteer program.  Through a relationship with VolunteerMatch, the largest online volunteer network in the country, employees can search for volunteer opportunities and track their hours.  Each time an employee logs 25 volunteer hours, the eligible organization receives a $500 gift from the Foundation in recognition of the employee’s volunteer service.

Horizon Cares also sponsors an annual Day of Caring for employees.  Hundreds of employees and their families and friends have participated in Day of Caring projects to date, which have included painting, landscaping and cleaning at five YMCAs where the company has offices located; building a new playground for underserved children in Northgate Park in Camden; and helping to “Restore the Shore” at Island Beach State Park following Hurricane Sandy.

Some of the other annual events that Horizon BCBSNJ participates in include:

Continuing Horizon BCBSNJ dedication in addressing the obesity epidemic in New Jersey, we have teamed up with three of New Jersey’s minor league baseball teams to bring smarter eating choices to America’s favorite pastime.  Horizon BCBSNJ opened Horizon Healthy Plate concession stands at the home ballparks of the Camden Riversharks, Lakewood BlueClaws and Trenton Thunder. Fans at every game are now able to find nutritious alternatives to the traditional ballpark fare.

Horizon BCBSNJ presented the teams with a series of menu options that are heart-healthy and nutritious (low in calories and sodium) without sacrificing taste. The ball clubs, in turn, suggested specific menu items that could be the healthy equivalent of typical ballpark fare. Each item is affordably priced and includes caloric and other nutritional information.

The Horizon Healthy Plate concession stand has been endorsed by the New Jersey Department of Health and its Shaping NJ program, a public/private partnership for nutrition, physical activity and obesity prevention.  During the 2013 baseball season, the total numbers of items sold at all three stands was 13,782 for an average of 63 items per game.

These are just some of the ways Horizon BCBSNJ fulfills Our Promise and gives back to the state we call home, New Jersey.

I worked at Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey full-time

I'm a former employee of Horizon BCBSNJ's cybersecurity team. As per Glassdoor's recommendations, this review will be divided into three sections - pros, cons and advice to management.

    1. World class senior management. The CSO and CISO are straight-up superstars.
    2. Excellent benefits
3.Excellent support for continued learning. Generous (very, very generous) training budget. Plenty of leeway in how you use it, as long as it's somewhat relevant and you are able to articulate why you need it.
    4. Some of your coworkers will be the among the smartest people in the industry. This is also a huge opportunity to learn and grow.
    5. Work location in Newark is right across the street from Penn Station. If you're a NJ Transit commuter, it's crazy how convenient this is. You can get from your desk anywhere in the building to your platform in less than 10 minutes.
    6. If you work in the cybersecurity team, you may have the ability to work out of their satellite offices in Mt. Laurel and/or Wall Township.
    7. Reasonable amount of turnover means a reasonable amount of promotional opportunities.
    8. Free gym.
    9. Really friendly people. I've had more interesting elevator conversations at Horizon in a year than I have in the rest of my life.

But as you may have guessed, it's never all green. Anywhere. Horizon is no exception.

    1. Erratic and temperamental middle management.
    2. Highly punitive culture. There are groups within Horizon that take pride in the number of people who have been terminated on their recommendation. They're hunters and you're the prey. Watch your back at all times and follow every rule, however silly it may seem (to you).
    3. Hopefully you like wearing ties because in the Security and Administration area, you will. All year. Even when it's hot... especially when it's hot.
    4. While the Newark location is super convenient for train commuters, it is the exact opposite if you plan to commute by car. Driving in and out of Newark is a nightmare. And they make matters worse by charging you to park on their own property ($7/day) once you get there.

    Advice to Management

Advice to management: Build on your greatest strength - the commitment to continued learning. Add on to that an additional step of holding employees accountable for failing to achieve their learning goals. Stop paying for the same people to take the same bootcamp every year.

Anonymous Interview Candidate in Newark, NJ

    Positive Experience
    Average Interview

I applied online. The process took 4+ weeks. I interviewed at Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey (Newark, NJ) in March 2017.

I applied for the position through the Horizon careers website. About a week after applying, I received an email from HR with available times for a phone interview. The phone interview was very brief... what my current work situation was, what the job description was, what my salary range was. Then I was informed the hiring manager would like to meet and was I available to go in for an interview. A few days later I was contacted by email about dates to go in to meet and days/times were very specific. I met with three people... a department manager, then the hiring manager joined us and then HR was the final person. Total interview time was 1.5 hours. It went very smoothly and most of the discussion was about what the role would entail, why the role was being filled (a retirement) and a lot about the work I have been doing. I showed them my most recent work, answered some specific project questions and felt pretty good about the conversation. The hiring manager did inform me that the role might involve more video/interactive (vs. print) than what the current person was doing which was a bit different than the original job description.
