I worked at Human Resources Research Organization full-time (More than 10 years)
Collaborative, nice, and smart coworkers/management; excellent retirement match and leave policy, nice location, everyone has an office instead of cubicles, free parking, good support for professional conferences. Managed by leading researchers who are recognized experts and have written books on how to apply sound research to practical issues. They seem to have made efforts to expand their business and capabilities in recent years. They strive to be on the cutting edge in assessments and statistics, and are strong in education research. The managers aimed to try to give work assignments that might balance using someone's expertise while helping them to develop capabilities.
At times workload was uneven (too high or not enough) which can happen with contract work in general. Pay did not seem to take into account locality or recognize the value of having a security clearance. At the time there seemed to be limited advancement opportunities.
Advice to Management
Try to recognize hard working employees or show appreciation for contributions in other ways throughout the year to help improve morale during stressful time periods if promotions are not feasible in the career structure. I heard that this improved in recent years.
I applied through other source. I interviewed at Human Resources Research Organization (Alexandria, VA).
Preliminary phone interview and a 1 day interview process with individual and panel interviews and I give a job talk to discuss research over lunch. They provided a decision very quickly. They were friendly and welcoming.
