Facebook's New Focus on 'Community' Might Actually Depress You

There's a problem with Facebook's focus on "community." Amid criticism of its data security and its role in the 2016 election, Facebook in June announced a change to its mission. No longer would the company strive to make the world more open and connected.

Come join us.

Seandon - Sr. Dev Ops Engineer

How did you end up at Imgur?

I joined Imgur after seeing that you guys were hiring - I wasn’t looking for a position but I figured I’d take a peek and see what one of my favorite startups looked like on the inside - and, well here I am, rock you like a hurricane.

What big problem are you trying to solve at Imgur?

I want to make it really difficult to bring down or break the site, service and apps. I’m a really big believer that reliability and speed are massive factors to the success of any business, particularly on the web (amazon predicts a 1second increase in load time on costs $1.6B anually), and I also believe that it’s typically the “boring” stuff that makes speed & reliability possible. By taking care of said boring stuff, I can make both users and developers happy!

What do you do at Imgur?

I’m a DevOps engineer, working on the team that focuses on reliability, performance and making developers jobs easy & enjoyable. I work primarily on our production systems and respond to alerts, but also build tools for developers and help optimize site performance.

What about Imgur  do you love most?

I think there is a largely unknown quotient when it comes to people my age (18-30). We can’t be advertised to in the normal ways, we don’t watch TV, we don’t answer polls or have home telephone numbers. I think there is tremendous value in building a social media network & advertising platform that “doesn’t suck”. I also admire the humble origins and hard work required to turn a handful of PHP code into a tech startup with hundreds of thousands of visitors!

Which internet movement would you say defined your adolescence and why?

I spent a huge amount of my childhood building radios, getting a HAM license, broadcasting and getting in trouble with local broadcasting authorities, generally being rebellious, etc. When the Egyptian Revolution started in 2011 and the government there shut off the internet, I helped teach people to make homemade radio transmitters, built speak-to-tweet dial-in lines, and generally helped in my own small way to get information out of Tahrir square and out to the world’s press. This reinforced to me how real of a force the internet and tech in general really is.

Vidhi - Sr. Android Engineer

How did you end up at Imgur?

I was looking for something fun and challenging while also affecting millions of users directly and what could be more fun than browsing Imgur “for” work and more challenging than bringing the amazing content at the best quality to the users?!

What big problem are you trying to solve at Imgur?

How to get this treasure trove of amazing content in the hands (and pockets) of as many people as possible. Most people have phones today - big or small, expensive or affordable, and a majority of them running some version of Android on it. I want to contribute to them having a good laugh, teary-smile and a feeling of oneness with people all over the world.

What do you do at Imgur?

I’m an Android developer, working on the team that focuses on the Imgur native app. Currently I’m working on getting new users to explore Imgur and see the value it brings.

Rajiv - Sr. Product Manager

How did you end up at Imgur?

I was ready for a new and different kind of challenge. Having been part of a turnaround, I wanted to join a social media company focused on growth. While that could be a lot of companies, I also desired to work with a smart, ambitious, fun and humble team and ultimately it was the culture at Imgur attracted me.

What big problem are you trying to solve at Imgur?

Imgur is home to the internet’s freshest and most entertaining images, but surfacing the right content to the right audience of users is difficult. We are solving how personalization should work on Imgur?

What do you do at Imgur?

I’m a Product Manager working on a team that focuses on User Engagement.  I work with a cross functional team of iOS, Android, Web, Platform Engineers and Designers focused on delighting our users.

What about Imgur do you love most?

As a father to 2 young kids with a one-way commute of over an hour, work-life flexibility is very important to me. Imgur offers plenty of flexibility to allow me meet the needs of my family, as well as a tremendous benefits package.

Which internet movement would you say defined your adolescence and why?

The internet movement that defined my adolescence was the internet, like it’s actual existence. Today we take email for granted, but in those days receiving an email was the coolest thing.

What tool can you not live without?!

DVR. It’s nearly impossible to watch anything on TV when it airs and without interruption.

What gif do you have on repeat right now?

What’s your go-to Karaoke song?

Friends In Low Places – Garth Brooks

What is the best meme ever?

All the Drake memes.

I have been working at Imgur full-time (More than 3 years)

I've been at Imgur for three years now and I have to say it's the best company I've every worked for. Start-ups get a bad rap for being known as places with crapy work/life balance. Imgur is a place that truly respects work/life balance and at the same time keeps a high bar for output and performance. I've had the opportunity to do some of my best work here and I truly feel like I'm part of a family. I know there is a huge focus on continuing to grow the Imgur product, make the company even more diverse and building a company for the future. All of those things excite me and I'm proud to work here. The benefits are some of the best in the business and the pay is competitive as well.

Imgur has had amazing organic scale and growth. I believe the company is at a very interesting crossroads for the future and I see the product team pushing the limits on the expectations for the future of our product. I think the future is unknown from a product perspective and that makes some people uneasy. However, the team is committed to Imgur being different and truly being a place that lifts the worlds spirits for a few moments everyday. It's going to be an interesting ride and I'm proud to be part of it.

    Advice to Management

Keep communicating the vision for Imgur and where we are headed. Let's truly be the best social site out there and stand for something different. Also, please keep a strong focus on diversity as we grow.

I applied through a recruiter. I interviewed at Imgur (San Francisco, CA) in April 2017.

This interview process was exactly what I think interviews should be. At all stages I was asked questions and asked to solve problems that we relevant to my experience and to the job I was interviewing for.
