Our Story from IMPAQ International on Vimeo.

Bringing Research to Life

In 2001, Jacob and Sharon Benus founded IMPAQ International based on their simple belief that exceptional people committed to rigorous research can drive the design and implementation of policies and programs that improve the lives of real people.

Jacob and Sharon were right.

Shortly after they founded IMPAQ, a self-employed contractor who IMPAQ had hired to wire the new office asked a simple question: “What does IMPAQ do?”

Since IMPAQ was brand new at the time, a staff member replied by describing the Unemployment Insurance Self-Employment Assistance (SEA) demonstration, a project that Jake had conducted before starting IMPAQ. SEA was an innovative program funded by the Department of Labor that investigated whether it is possible to train those who are unemployed to become entrepreneurs.

The contractor—who still works with IMPAQ, and whose business has grown alongside IMPAQ’s—interrupted, “Wait! I was trained by SEA; SEA helped me to start my business!”

Jacob and Sharon’s belief in the power of bringing together exceptional people to do rigorous work to improve people’s lives remains the driving force behind IMPAQ more than a decade after its founding.

However, what was once a boutique firm is now a company of more than 350 employees, with offices in Columbia, MD, Washington, D.C., Oakland, CA, Boston, MA, Sarajevo, Bosnia & Herzegovina, and Hilo, HI.

Today, IMPAQ’s teams collaborate with public sector clients, such as the U.S. Departments of Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education, as well as private sector clients such as the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, to address some of the most critical challenges of our time - from the implementation of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act to reducing the unemployment rate and putting Americans back to work.

IMPAQ is recognized as one of the best places to work in our region, and is known for its hallmark entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to diversity.

The story does not end here. IMPAQ continues to grow, diversifying our offerings and services, expanding into new sectors and industries, serving new clients, and building on the productive relationships established with clients over the years.

IMPAQ has undergone many changes since its founding, but there has always been one constant: exceptional people committed to rigorous research can make a meaningful difference in people’s lives across the globe.

Our Career Development Framework provides clear and flexible guidelines for staff looking to develop professional skills and to advance their careers at IMPAQ.

The foundations and pillars of this framework provide staff with the direction needed to develop professionally based on their career goals, while preparing them for increasingly challenging responsibilities at IMPAQ.

IMPAQ Cultural Foundations

The foundations of success at IMPAQ are innovation, collaboration, and entrepreneurship. These values have shaped IMPAQ from its modest beginnings and continue to be the foundations of our culture. We encourage staff to demonstrate these values in everything they do. Innovation, collaboration, and entrepreneurship are rewarded and celebrated at IMPAQ and provide the groundwork for facilitating career development discussions.

IMPAQ Career Pillars

The four career pillars give structure for a well-balanced approach to staff development. The career pillars are the basis for creating and prioritizing professional training and skill development initiatives across IMPAQ. These skills also contribute to the growth and success of IMPAQ. As IMPAQ grows, so do the opportunities for career advancement and growth.

Career Progression

Career progression at IMPAQ occurs through continuous demonstration of the values of innovation, collaboration, and entrepreneurship represented in our cultural foundations and through the the development and application of job skills within each of the career pillars. Your career growth is intricately linked to the growth and success of IMPAQ.

I have been working at Impaq International part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Decent pay for a part-time job, flexible schedule, diverse staff. Most supervisors are decent. Manager is firm but fair, she really cares about us. Company is growing and changing.

    Cons

You have to work weekends, but not every weekend. No decent public transportation. The survey is repetitive and annoying sometimes.

    Advice to Management

Let us have our own headsets, and some bonuses would be nice

    Application

I applied through college or university. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Impaq International (Washington, DC) in April 2017.

    Interview

I applied through my university recruiting website online and was contacted for a phone interview about 3 weeks later. My conversation with the talent specialist was a wonderful experience, she provided a lot of information about job specifics, and asked primarily resume questions related to past research experience and writing. Can't say enough good things about her! I was then contacted shortly after to set up a time for an in-office interview and to send a writing sample. My in-office interview was slotted for 1.5 hours but went over to 2 hours. The interview was a panel, with time set aside at the end to speak 1 on 1 with the department manager. Questions were primarily behavioral, with some technical research questions related to research and writing again. I received my offer two days later.
