Technical Account Manager
Being a woman in tech, I only recently started advocating for myself at work about advancement opportunities. Because of this I wanted to ask this question to my male counterparts. When you have 1:1's with your direct reports and talk about career growth / aspirations what is your managers’ response typically? I’d like to gauge how my experience (negative) differs from others. I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Internet Brands (United States)
InterviewA couple weeks after applying, I was invited for a pleasant phone screen with HR, then was asked to complete an editing test over the next 7-10 days. This included line editing / copyediting / fact-checking several restaurant and hotel reviews (including cutting word counts by about half), as well as an exercise that involved reading one of their print guides, explaining what they do well and providing suggestions for improvement, pitching an entirely new print guide, and writing an essay on what travel means to me. And, while this part isn't technically on them, it was additional annoying icing on the cake that due to library covid closures, I bought one of their print guides to do the exercise, so I contributed to their sales in addition to providing numerous ideas and pitches without compensation. In situations like this it's hard not to infer that they're gathering and using good ideas for free from senior candidates, only to relist the position at a lower level later...
