Engineering Students Shadow Professionals at Laitram and W.S. Nelson

It's one thing to study engineering. It's another thing to be an engineer. That's why twenty-two University of New Orleans engineering majors last week participated in half daylong job shadowing experiences at W.S. Nelson Engineering and Laitram L.L.C., both in the New Orleans area.

  • Have you imagined riding our Activated Roller Belt™ technology all the way through an airport? One writer at Gizmodo had just that thought: http://glassdoor.com/slink.htm?key=vIo22

We Should Replace the Floors in Every Airport With These Magical Conveyor Belts

The only thing better than finding a short Starbucks line while navigating an airport is finding a moving sidewalk that can quickly whisk you closer to your gate. But imagine if all the floors in an airport were replaced with Intralox's amazing omnidirectional conveyor belts?

Intralox – Why Work For Us?

Intralox is Laitram’s largest division. It manufactures not only the most versatile line of modular plastic belting products but other patented conveying technologies and ARB equipment solutions. The company’s mission is to create significant economic value for customers by optimizing their conveying systems.

Intralox’s products and services are ideal for many industrial applications and are widely used in general food processing, meat, poultry and seafood processing, beverage handling, can manufacturing, baking, case and box handling, and packaging.

Coupled with the strongest guarantees in the business for belt performance and on-time shipping, Intralox consistently delivers where it matters most-service, technology, accountability, and results.

Fitness Center & Nutrition Center

In October 2013, Laitram opened the Laitram Fitness & Nutrition Center on its Harahan, Louisiana campus. Operated by Lifestart Fitness, the fitness center is available to all employees 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for a nominal fee. It is staffed full time by a registered dietician, health coach and personal trainer  to assist employees in reaching their fitness and nutrition goals.

Employees can enjoy amenities typical of their local gym, including free weights, treadmills, elliptical machines and stationary bikes as well as a group exercise room where classes such as Cycling, Yoga and Pilates are included in the membership. Post workout, locker rooms with toiletries and showers are available to employees.

Laitram has partnered with Marathon Health to provide wellness and healthcare services to its employees and families, using the Marathon Health MedicalHome@Work™ model as the foundation for care delivery. This model facilitates a partnership between the patient and caregiver with preventative and primary care, care coordination and referral management, community provider and health services integration, and a HIPAA-compliant technology platform for documenting and managing care.

The Laitram Health & Wellness Center reflects the innovation Laitram prides itself on as well as their business philosophy that directs its employees to focus on productivity (Wellness Center brochure).

Our Values in Action

Ensuring that we remain the best long-term partner for our customers takes consistent delivery in four key areas:

Service

Each decision made at Intralox (our industry structure, choice of telephone systems, inventory levels, what products we make, even who we hire) is evaluated against the ultimate principle of delivering superior service. We chose a direct global business model and industry structure to give customers immediate contact with someone knowledgeable—not just about our solutions, but about industry trends, metrics, and production flow details. This ensures that we give every customer exactly what they need, when they need it, reliably and consistently. And that’s what we call superior service.

Technology

Technology and continuous innovation are core to our business philosophy. Forty years ago, Intralox introduced a brand new concept: modular plastic conveyor belting. Today, this technology is the standard in food, tire, beverage, container, and other industries worldwide. Over the years we have added other technologies to our portfolio, synergistic with and expanding on that original idea. These include abrasion resistant technology, spiral technology, Activated Roller Belt™ (ARB™) technology, and most recently, ThermoDrive® technology. Our R&D focus remains on high-value, system-critical products that solve specific (costly) production challenges

Accountability

Intralox’s written, money-back guarantees are the most obvious proof of accountability to customers. From our standard belt performance guarantee to a variety of customized savings, payback, and life guarantees, to expedited shipment guarantees, customers know that if we say we’ll do something, we do it.  And if we mess up, we’ll fix it.  Our entire culture is one of accountability. Principles of ownership and self-management are critical to company structure: every person is accountable for their behavior and performance…and our customers benefit.

Results

Improved business results and increased profits are our goals for our customers. We believe our technology and services must make our end users more profitable in the long term, or we don’t deserve the business. So we focus a great deal on customer results—measuring savings, productivity enhancements, efficiency gains, or the impact on other customer KPIs. And we hold ourselves accountable to delivering tangible, sustainable results.

Self-managed people are our greatest asset.

Continuous Improvement.  A lot of companies use these words today.  What’s special at Intralox is that here, continuous improvement is more than a philosophy: it’s a way of life.

We believe that continuous improvement simply means “making things better.”   It goes beyond solving today’s problems: it’s about constantly seeking ways to produce greater results from our actions, to improve processes and increase productivity before problems even arise.

Every employee at Intralox is charged with contributing ideas and taking action to make things better: for our customers, for our colleagues and even for ourselves!

Our company was founded on the power of a good idea. And we know that good ideas can only come from people. Because of this, we believe that self-managed people are our greatest resource. Self-managed employees think and behave as owners in their everyday work and focus on the business results of their actions.

We’ve developed structures and processes designed to encourage and reward continuous improvement. At any given moment, multiple employees around the globe are participating in, what we call, ‘LCI teams’ (Laitram Continuous Improvement teams). LCI teams are cross-functional teams, formed specifically to solve specific problems or improve productivity in a particular area of the company.  They own the problem and therefore also own the solution.

This kind of ownership creates the context for continuous improvement. By thinking like an owner, we all live by the same standards: we work as a team; we listen to each other’s ideas; we take pride in and show enthusiasm for our work. We constantly look for ways to improve our productivity and our efficiency. We make decisions that support win/win relationships with our customers. By thinking and acting like owners of the company, we all share in the company’s success.

Our culture is fundamental to our business.  It extends globally and unites all Intralox employees across country and regional borders.  Whether you work in the Americas, in Europe or in Asia Pacific, your colleagues’ actions will demonstrate their commitment to continuous improvement and their belief in the global values of honesty, mutual respect, and fairness.

Our goal is to deliver comprehensive conveying solutions that deliver significant economic value to our customers.  We are a team of self-managed people who believe in doing what it takes to make things better.

If you share this belief, we invite you to explore our current job opportunities and consider whether you could play a part in achieving that goal. Whether you’re an injection molding expert or a savvy salesperson, we would like to learn more about you and your skills.

    Application

I applied through college or university. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Intralox in November 2016.

    Interview

During the interview he asked a series of technical questions regarding to my major, the classes I've taken, and how it can be applied to the company. The representative asked me questions about my involvement on campus and followed up with an open floor for any questions that he can answer. Overall the interview was straight forward about getting to know me as a student rather than getting to know my experience as a worker and how I can contribute to Intralox.

    Interview Questions

    • What is your major? Can you explain to me what your major consists of? What is your favorite class and what is your least favorite class? I can see that you are involved in many organizations, can you tell me the duties that applied to your position?   Answer Question
