I worked at Invisible Circus (More than 8 years)
Working for a small company lets you experience multiple facets of the business. Everyone at Invisible Circus is responsible for a lot of different things, which means one has a greater sense of ownership. I always felt well supported, but my work load was my own responsibility, and I was empowered to use my expertise to complete projects the best I could.
The flip side of working for a small company is the lack of opportunity. Sometimes, there just isn't any place to grow into. Also, work can't be spread out among the small group of people. Long hours are necessary when deadlines are compounded.
Advice to Management
There are some small business struggles that never end. How much should a company expand, recruitment strategies, sales and marketing presence, information distribution, company policy, etc. My general advice to any small company would be to pick one or two longer term uncertainties at a time, assess them thoroughly, and make some decisions about them. This way a company can make incremental progress in non-vital capacities, without risking core business.
