I worked at Ion Torrent Systems as a contractor (More than a year)
Well informed upper management
Employees treated well
Lunch provided every day
Management has good understanding of the "Big Picture"
Can be a fun place to work
Extremely nice people
Everyone is dedicated and works hard
Easy to fit in
Mid-Management struggles with day-to-day research activities.
Extremely redundant work (R&D), except for mechanical engineers.
You are expected to know everything as soon as you walk in the door.
Constantly looked down upon by managers if you aren't at least a Scientist II.
Training is sub-par.
Their technology will NEVER catch up to Illumina's technology, Ion Torrent is going to lose value more and more over time and eventually become extinct.
If you haven't been an employee there for at least two years, job security is extremely unstable, don't count on keeping your job.
The founder of Ion Torrent is an extreme nut-case who walks in and starts screaming demands at everybody and has irrational expectations that sometimes don't make sense either. He is VERY selfish and very money-driven. If you are a new employee, or not somebody important, be prepared to be looked down upon by him, he won't respond to you even if you say Hi.
Advice to Management
Keep on truckin'. Have a back-up career plan because your jobs will eventually vanish due to the lack of demand for Ion Torrent products.
I applied online. The process took 2+ months. I interviewed at Ion Torrent Systems (South San Francisco, CA) in August 2013.
I applied directly for this position online and was contacted after ~4 months for a phone screen with HR. Following that initial call, I had another phone interview with the hiring manager, followed by 3 rounds of on-site interviews to meet folks at different levels of organizational structure within the department (over a 2 month period). After final round of on-site interviews, I was told by hiring manager that they would initiate the offer process. 2 weeks later, I received an email from HR saying that they decided to go with higher qualified candidates. I wonder if every candidate goes through FIVE (5) rounds of interviews at Ion Torrent before being screened out. HR was slow to respond throughout process.
