JUUL Labs was founded by former smokers, James and Adam, with the goal of improving the lives of the world's one billion adult smokers by eliminating cigarettes. We envision a world where fewer adults use cigarettes, and where adults who smoke cigarettes have the tools to reduce or eliminate their consumption entirely, should they so desire.

OUR INTENT

As scientists, product designers and engineers, we believe that vaping can have a positive impact when used by adult smokers, and can have a negative impact when used by nonsmokers. Our goal is to maximize the positive and reduce the negative.

These alternatives contain nicotine, which has not been shown to cause cancer but can create dependency. We believe that these alternatives are not appropriate for people who do not already smoke.

OUR STORY

We are committed to innovating with adult smokers in mind.

Adam Bowen and James Monsees co-founded JUUL Labs when they applied their background in product design to the challenge of finding a true alternative to smoking. They had been smokers for many years, but when they could find no acceptable alternative to cigarettes, Adam and James recognized a groundbreaking opportunity to apply industrial design to the smoking industry, which had not materially evolved in over one hundred years.

As smokers, they knew a true alternative to cigarettes would have to offer a nicotine level found in no other alternative on the market. It would also have to invite its own ritual. The result was JUUL.

OUR RESPONSIBILITY

We believe JUUL is the first viable alternative for adult smokers. Those who don’t currently use nicotine products should not start. We recognize that smoking alternatives continue to be the subject of conversation. We welcome dialogue, debate, and data.

 

YOUTH PREVENTION

JUUL Labs is committed to improving the lives of the world's one billion adult smokers by eliminating cigarettes. We don't want anyone who doesn't smoke, or already use nicotine, to use JUUL products.

We certainly don't want youth using the product. It is bad for public health, and it is bad for our mission.

JUUL Labs is committed to combating youth use of vapor products, including JUUL. In November 2018, we launched a comprehensive action plan to combat youth usage in the United States. These actions include:

Restricting Flavors

In November, we suspended the distribution of Mango, Fruit, Creme, and Cucumber to traditional retail. These flavors are currently available only online at JUUL.com with our enhanced online controls that are compliant with our 21+ Restricted Distribution System.

Enhancing Online Controls at JUUL.com

Since we submitted our action plan, we have strengthenedour e-commerce platform to further restrict underage and bulk purchases:

  • First, we revised our bulk-purchasing limits to restrict users from purchasing excess quantities of product and reselling to others, potentially youth.
  • Second, we implemented two-factor authentication for all new JUUL.com accounts.
  • Third, we incorporated facial-recognition technology, requiring a potential purchaser to upload a photo in addition to his or her government-issued identification if their personal information cannot be verified by publicly-available records

Improving Retailer Compliance

We have ramped up our secret shopper program and now conduct compliance checks against our bulk-purchasing requirements (2 devices and 5 pod packages per transaction). The program grew from approximately 500 checks per month to 2,000.

We have also taken additional measures to strengthen retailer compliance. We have revised our reseller policy and notified retailers that we will penalize them for FDA CMP violations.

Exited Social Media

We discontinued our Facebook and Instagram accounts. We continue to maintain a Twitter account, but only for non-promotional communications such as study results, executive hires, potential safety notices, and other corporate announcements. We are continuously working to remove inappropriate third-party social media content in partnership with major social media companies. Third-party users generate more than 99 percent of all social media content related to JUUL.

Developing Technology-Based Solutions to Prevent Youth Use

Borrowing concepts from the pharmaceutical and other industries, we have started the process to build a robust individual product tracking system. Ultimately, we will be able to trace a device confiscated from an underage user back through the distribution channel, potentially identifying the retailer that sold the product, and take appropriate action.

Additionally, we are moving full-steam ahead with the development of our Bluetooth-connected device that could incorporate user-level access restrictions.

Supporting Tobacco 21 Legislation

We strongly support responsible legislation, such as raising the minimum-purchasing age for tobacco products, including vapor products like JUUL, to 21 years of age. We will actively pursue Tobacco 21 laws by drafting legislation, funding advocacy campaigns, and engaging with lawmakers.

While raising the legal age to purchase tobacco products to 21 is not the only strategy for reducing underage use, we believe it is critical because it will prevent high-school seniors and recent high-school graduates from purchasing tobacco products and sharing them with underage users. We know that “social sourcing”—obtaining tobacco products from friends or siblings who are of legal age—is the main contributor to youth use.

MARKETING CODE

We adhere to strict guidelines to ensure that our marketing and commercial communications are directed toward existing adult smokers. These guidelines, which may be modified from time to time, include assuring that our marketing is clear on the following points:

  • JUUL is a nicotine product intended for adult smokers of legal purchase age
  • JUUL is not appropriate or intended for youth
  • JUUL is not intended for former smokers or never smokers
  • JUUL is a switching product. JUUL products are not intended to be used as cessation products, including for the cure or treatment of nicotine addiction (e.g., smoking cessation), relapse prevention, or relief of nicotine withdrawal symptoms
  • We do not feature images or situations intended for a youth audience
  • Our campaigns depict appropriately aged individuals
  • We do not use cartoons, caricatures, or other designs aimed at attracting minors
  • We ensure responsible placement of our product designed to limit exposure to an underage demographic
  • Paid product sampling complies with all federal and state regulations
  • We support and comply with all federal and state regulations to prevent sales to minors – this includes stringent third party age verification for online sales
  • We use social media responsibly to ensure content is targeted to adult smokers, while limiting engagement by youth. In the U.S., we do not use social media to advertise or promote JUUL products, and messaging is limited to non-promotional communications
 

REGULATION AND PUBLIC POLICY

We want to be part of the solution to end combustible smoking, not part of a problem to attract youth, never smokers, or former smokers to nicotine products. We invest our time and resources in new ways to deliver JUUL exclusively to adult smokers, and we welcome discussions on this topic.

We support reasonable regulation of nicotine products and comply with all relevant laws and regulations.

We did not create JUUL to undermine years of effective tobacco control, and we do not want to see a new generation of smokers. We believe JUUL can accelerate cigarette displacement.

We are committed to understanding JUUL’s performance and impact. Incorporating the latest research from leading scientists in the field drives our innovation.

    I have been working at JUUL Labs full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    - Everyone I have met has a shared commitment to the mission, and works hard towards achieving it. There is an authenticity that I haven't found in other places.

    - We created a new category so we have a lot of unique problems to solve for that you wouldn't get exposure to otherwise. the work is challenging and each day is different.

    - Growth prospects are incredible. I've been here a few months and have had the opportunity to build a team and function from the ground up. With the pace at which we are moving, scope will only increase.

    - I'm getting paid well and the benefits here are top of the line.

    - Things move fast, you don't have to wait weeks for an approval or to get the ball rolling. If it drives the business forward, you're empowered to move swiftly.

    - We have an awesome leadership team. Kevin keeps everyone informed about what is happening and I that he and the e-team are making the right calls for us. It is clear that they care and want to do right by us.

    Cons

    Work life balance is definitely challenging here. It's not really an issue because I love what I do and I knew what I was getting into. Putting it out there though because if you're looking for a 9-5 JUUL is not the right fit for you.

    We definitely have some dead weight - some of the folks who we have hired may have been a fit for us when we were growing from 200-500 people, but they can't keep up now and are more challenging to work with than is necessary. Leadership needs to start making tough decisions in service of scalability.

    Continue to be transparent with us. Get better with terminating employees.
